As the owner of my own business, I found this book an insightful and enjoyable read.It is full of interesting and useful information that will help anyone with a family business see the dynamics of their situation with more clarity and resolve.

Family businesses are very common, and as everyone who is in one knows, they all come with a unique set of advantages as well as certain unavoidable complications that have to be recognized and addressed.Yet most family businesses just end up the way they are without considering or preparing for them very much. This book is a refreshing and concise way of looking at the common issues and instills knowledge and confidence about dealing with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and provide good insights to new owners
The author describes what a family entrepreneur needs to know in order to run a successful family business. The autor alsohighlights three major management functions - communication, cooperation and control for a family business owner such as how to evaluate relatives in a family business. It is practical and valuable because small family business owners may not know how to handle such situations effectively. After reading this book, it helps me to understand how to manage my family business practically. In the last two chapters the author also address the problems of succession and retirement that I haven't thought before.Anyway, I recommend this book to those people to plan or just started his or her small family business. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not a book for entrepreneurs
This book highlights what you should do as a small business owner or what you should do if you would like to start a business.Just because you are a small business owner does not necessarily mean that you are an entrepreneur.

The book was filled with typos and the graphics were severely pixilated.

I read a lot of business books and a lot of books on entrepreneurship. This was one of the few books that I gave to Goodwill after reading the first few chapters and scanning the rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive entrepreneurial guide
This is the best Entrepreneurial guide I have ever read. It is filled with handy coaching tips and points to ponder. The book does not just focus on business development but it also deals with the self analysis of the individual. There is an interesting section on idea development with various practical and real life examples. The book highlights pitfalls on choices that will guide the entrepreneur through the daunting maze of business options. The book does not stop at the business plan development but also gives a unique insight to family businesses and succession planning, covering the whole life cycle of the business not just the start-up. A must read for everyoe thinking of developing a business idea. ... Read more

Product Description
Managing the transition of family wealth from generation to generation is a daunting task. Families with businesses require inheritance plans that are even more complicated because wealth and worth are often intricately woven into the business. And many transition plans focus only on financial capital and ignore a familys less tangible assets. Other plans detail the intrinsic elements of an inheritance without satisfying the practical issues.

In Family Wealth Transition Planning, Bonnie Brown Hartley and Gwendolyn Griffith guide advisers to families with small businesses through the complex process of preparing and transferring wealth to heirs. The authors take a holistic view of transition planning, focusing on the assets that fall under the umbrella of financial capital, as well as the other key sources of family wealth: human and social capital.

"An invaluable guide for families as well as their advisers."--Lee Hausner, Ph.d., President, First Family Advisers

"Family Wealth Transition Planning integrates the human and social elements with the financial, offering readers a three-dimensional approach to family wealth transition planning. This book is a very important contribution to the field and should be in every adviser's library!" --Jane Hilburt-Davis, President Emeritus, Family Firm Institute, President, Key Resources, LLC

"Bonnie and Gwendolyn bring clarity to the complex, multidiscipline world of family wealth advising. Their work can only serve to improve the family and adviser relationship and lead to measurable success for all."--Kathryn M. McCarthyIndependent Adviser to Families and Family Offices

"A profound body of work...rich in research and strong on process. The authors use stories and case studies to motivate families, their businesses, and advisers to successfully engage in the most worthwhile journey of perpetuating the family legacy."--Dirk Jungé, Chairman and CEO, Pitcairn ... Product Description

This book examines the relationship between work and family in small family business in Hong Kong, based on data obtained from in-depth interviews on married couples running small retail shops. It was found that despite the perceived advantage of flexibility, running a small family business did not necessarily result in a working pattern compatible with family needs.

In studies on small family business, the contribution by the wives was often overlooked. This book pays special attention to the part played by women in the setting up and running of small family business. This book will be a useful reference for people interested in qualitative sociology, small business studies, family studies and women's studies.

Description:
This study examines financial intermingling in small family businesses. We define a family business as one in which at least two family members work and the business is owned and managed by one of the family members. This study compares the determinants of intermingling in family and non-family businesses. The empirical results show that family businesses are not significantly different from non-family businesses in terms of intermingling once other business and household characteristics are controlled for. For both family and non-family businesses, differences in financial intermingling are primarily characterized by differences in business characteristics and household net worth. We conclude that intermingling of household and business financial resources are probably more influenced by business characteristics and household net worth than by other household characteristics or whether a business is a family business. ... From the supplier: Small business owners worry about the day when they will pass ownership of their businesses to their heirs, aware of the adverse effects of estate taxes on their financial position. The federal government can help alleviate the fears of small business owners by exempting them from estate taxes. If a complete exemption is not possible, Pres. Clinton should adopt the pro-small business provisions in Congress' budget plan. These would exempt small businesses from federal taxes by as much as $1.5 million, institute a $750,000 personal exemption and cut by half the tax rate for small businesses.

From the supplier: Field theory is advanced as a research tool for describing the management and resource allocation decisions made by owners-managers of small family businesses. Unlike other research methods, field theory takes into account the conflicting demands of family and business objectives in examining the behavior of small business owner-managers. The method is supported by information gathered from a mail survey of 902 entrepreneurs.

From the supplier: Small Chinese businesses in Singapore are starting to feel the pressure of having to abide by Western standards and practices being imposed by the young generation. Such standards run contradictory to traditional Chinese management with its focus on family rather than the individual and centralization of power rather than team effort. Striking a proper balance between acquiring essential Western elements needed for an evolving economy and maintenance of tested and proven traditional values is recommended.
