4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, and fun to look at!
This is a nice little book...my kids enjoy it.It is educational and the pictures are fun for them to look at.It is one of the books I will find them leafing through at various times, and my 5-year-old likes to have me read it to her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Butterflies (Scholastic First Discovery)
The above mentioned book was a gift. The fact that a friend, who lives and is a citizen of Prague, the Czech Republic specifically asked for the First Discovery books does deserve, in my opinion, a five star rate.

5-0 out of 5 stars The second of this series I'd highly recommend
This series is an imitation of the Eyewitness format for younger readers with see-through pages thrown in.I'd recommend it primarily to preschoolers.

Except for the wrong definition of moth vs. butterfly and a picture late in the book that implies that the hawkmoth (not the cicada) starts life underground, this is an excellent books with great information presented in a colorful, entertaining manner. It covers the diet, anatomy, and lifecycle of butterflies, as well as touching on the vast variety of species.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful series!
My four-year-old son and I are both BIG fans of the First Discovery Book series. We own a handful of these books, and if finances would permit, we would own them all!

As for the Horn Book statement "The text isoften difficult to read over the illustrations",I totally DISAGREE. It is a non-fiction picture book, consisting of a multitude of captions. The transparent pages are the main reasons we are drawn to these books. They in no way hinder the reading of the text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I just love this book. I have read it several times and it just keeps getting better. I would recommend this book to everyone!

3-0 out of 5 stars A little dissappointed
This is the first book by Megan Derr that I did not enjoy as much as I enjoyed her Prisoner, Fairy Tales Slashed, Regency and several other titles of hers. I love this author's works, I am more than happy to support her, she has a credit of trust from me for at least several more books to come, but I felt that this story was missing bite if that makes sense. I mean, yes, it is sweet and I sympathized with Cassidy and his plight, but I did not feel much chemistry between protagonists. In most of her other stories I felt not just chemistry, but fire and in her stories sex scenes usually fade to black and she still made me feel that fire, but not so much here.

I was really curious to see how she does realistic contemporary setting and I was less impressed than with her historical/fantasy/futuristic settings.

Her writing is still enjoyable though.

1-0 out of 5 stars cute story
My 3 year old loves all the Angelina Ballerina books. She just started ballet in January 2010.It is a wonderful story and a fairly short read so you can read a few books before bedtime. We love them.

2-0 out of 5 stars stick with the dvds
sure you may want your child to read but this cheap booklet is not worth it. you assume the animation isactually the books brought to life but it is not.the book is visually uninteresting and not well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love something let it go !
This is a great story that has been adapted from the Television series by Katharine Holabird. The story shows how Angelina the mouse finds a lovely pink butterfly that has hurt it leg. The story show how Angelina wants to keep the butterfly as a pet after its leg it healed, but begins to have second thoughts.
Colorful pictures on every page of this book help keep the readers attention, while the story really shows kids that maybe a trapped animal is really better if it is set free. This book shows a good moral lesson for readers of any age.

Four very different women embark on a transformational journey that follows the migrating monarchs across the United States to Mexico. The story begins when Luz Avila's grandmother, the local butterfly lady, purchases an old, orange VW bug for a road trip home to Mexico. When she unexpectedly dies, Luz is inspired to take her grandmother's ashes home. In the manner of the Aztec myth of the goddess who brings light to the world, Luz attracts a collection of lost women, each seeking change in their lives. The Mexican people believe the monarchs are the spirits of the recently departed and Luz taps into ancient rituals and myths as she follows the spectacular, glittering river of orange monarchs in the sky to home. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ready to Be Blown Away By A Book for Children?
Bruce Coville is the author of one of the greatest children's books I have ever read. No, it doesn't seem to have won any of the awards that children's books but that seems to have been a major mistake here. This is a great book about a boy who dreams and associates with monarch butterflies. He tries to study them later on but won't do the required killings and collecting of butterflies that is required in his major. So he becomes an expert on his own and learns more about them than any other other scientist.Wonderful story and a huge surprise, I had never heard of this book before.I would have given it 6 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book...
I bought this book for my daughter because she loved it so much that she brought it home from the library every other week. This book arrived pretty quickly. I was kinda of surprised. I could not beat the price and the book was in excellent condition even though it was sent in a plastic mailer. I would definately order from this seller because they ship in a timely manner and did not mislead me about it's condition. Very happy, daughter is too and thats all that mattered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful picture book!
This is one of the most meaningful picture books I have read in a long time. The message is so important for children if our environment is to survive many more generations. My students have sat spellbound as I read this book out loud to them. The discussions afterward are incredible. This book is a must for all school, classroom, and home libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars This one will stay with you for a long, long time...
One of the most evocative children's books I've seen in years. The art is simply spellbinding---and the ending will touch all but the hardest of hearts. An unusual picture book in that it creates some real narrative and emotional tension along the way before winding up to a wonderful finish. My kids were leaning forward in anticipation.
A must for any Monarch lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book for everyone
A wonderful book! The highly original story works seamlessly with the astoundingly beautiful paintings to create a very powerful reading experience. It is a magical tale combined with an effective message about the real plight of the Monarchs.
Everyone I show this book to loves it; all are inevitably moved both by the story and the gorgeous illustrations.

Product Description
Butterfly Burning brings the brilliantly poetic voice ofZimbabweanwriter Yvonne Vera to American readers for the first time. Set in Makokoba, a black township, in the late l940s, the novel is an intensely bittersweet love story. When Fumbatha, a construction worker, meets the much younger Phephelaphi, he"wants her like the land beneath his feet from which birth had severed him."He in turn fills her "with hope larger than memory." But Phephelaphi is not satisfied with their "one-room" love alone. The qualities that drew Fumbatha to her, her sense of independence and freedom, end up separating them. And the closely woven fabric of township life, where everyone knows everyone else, has a mesh too tight and too intricate to allow her to escape her circumstances on her own.

Vera exploits language to peel away the skin of public and private lives. In Butterfly Burning she captures the ebullience and the bitterness of township life, as well as the strength and courage ofher unforgettable heroine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing
All those who enter into this novel will be rewarded. One of the best writers of any country, Yvonne Vera's poetic language may be dense, but it is oh, so worth untangling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short Novel, Dense Prose.
Don't judge this book by its cover, its a tough read. Her style reminds of Morrison, but on another lyrical level. The plot is paper thin if not for the dense language. The concentration is more on the language than an actual plot. If you like poetry check this out, if you want a riveting story you might want to look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your average novel, but poetry
The Booker Tea Reading Group (Wash., D.C.) read this title for our June discussion. While all of us agreed that Vera was a powerful and skilled writer, many also concluded that her writing style was so dense and poetry-like that it made it a challenge to read. This is not a put-down-pick-up-where-you-left-off book. The book does not have a plot.Rather, you are painted a picture of Southern Rhodesia that is both brutal and compelling for the reader and the characters drawn by Vera. The author gives space to the love story in glimpses between images of racial violence, back-breaking labor, rootless children, lost women and desperate men. Some scenes were so vivid it made me wriggle about in discomfort. We recently read "Austerlitz" by Sebald. If you were a patient enough reader for that, and enjoyed it, you'll like Vera. Also reminiscent of the beautiful and complex works of Toni Morrison.

4-0 out of 5 stars POWERFUL WRITING THAT SPEAKS TO THE UNIVERSAL HEART
Yvonne Vera's talent is amazing - she is gifted with the ability to relate stories set in her native Zimbabwe with stunning literary grace and beauty, opening the lives of her characters to the readers' eyes and hearts, laying bare the lovely and depraved and everything in between. That she does all of this and additionally illuminates and brings forth the universal aspects in each and every instance bears witness to the fact that, while she may be an African writer, writing about African people and events, she deserves to be recognized, admired and honored by the world at large - and the world at large owes it to itself to discover her talents.

BUTTERFLY BURNING is set in a Rhodesian township in the late 1940s - long before Independence from British rule. The black citizens (who, in reality, weren't recognized as citizens in their own country) were reviled by most of the whites, looked upon as a source of cheap labor and criminal activity. They weren't even allowed to walk on the sidewalks with the 'imported' white citizens. The heroine of Vera's novel is a young woman named Phephelaphi - orphaned as a young girl and raised by a close friend of her mother, she is filled with a burning need to always become more, to see her life expand without limits. This longing became widespread in the hearts of women in the West many years later with the rise of feminism - women sick of being relegated to cooking and cleaning, aching for more of an education and more of a chance to find their place in the world. Phephelaphi's yearnings lead her ever forward - emotionally, socially, and with respect to a potential career. When her path crosses with that of Fumbatha - an older man with a kind heart and a bruised and battered past (as many in Rhodesia were) - she finds love and security, and, for a while, satisfaction and fulfillment. With all of the love he can offer her, however, Fumbatha cannot fulfill all of Phephelaphi's needs - and her search to meet these needs brings her both joy and sorrow. The joys she experiences will raise your heart to the heavens - and her sorrows will break it.

As in her newest novel, THE STONE VIRGINS, Vera breathes palpable life into her characters - they are immediately acceptable and accessible to the reader. The physical settings - both the natural world and the world of the township and city - spring to life as well through the careful brush-strokes of the author's words. All of it blends together into a style that entertains on one level, certainly - but this writing will affect the reader on many, many levels. There is a depth and beauty here - and a natural grace - that is a rare thing in writing. Vera's novels are short (two of them, WITHOUT A NAME and UNDER THE TONGUE, are contained in one volume), but don't be deceived - once begun, they expand exponentially, and they will resonate within you for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exquisite Find
I found this book while browsing my local library shelves.

The story of a young woman's longing for selfhood in an Arfrican township during the 1940's speaks volumes to all of us who have felt, at one time or another, trapped in the seeming bleakness of our surroundings.

The writing is startlingly beautiful in its imagery, rich and full of bittersweetness like chocolate. The words come in floods and tides, you are literally overwhelmed by her words. They, alone, give their own experience.

The story of Phephelaphi is visceral: you do not merely read about her life, but feel it through her pain. Vera writes with the African closeness to nature and being; it is not an easy read, but one that will stay with you long after the last page is turned. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information For The Backyard Nature Lover!
This book provides the reader with awesome and specific information on how to create a backyard habitat for wildlife. It is increasingly important for people to consider wildlife needs in their backyards with the ever on going sprawl of the cities. Much wildlife habitat is consumed by the growth of the cities, and this book gives a good starting point for beginners, as well as detailed information that even the more experienced person can use to make their backyard a wildlife habitat. There are even instructions on how to register you backyard habitat with the National Wildlife Federation! I recommend this book to anyone interested in giving their backyard a wildlife habitat make over!

Great book- well liked by my 80 year old grandfather- he's an avid bird watcher.Really enjoyed this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Attracting Wildlife
When you read this book you know you are receiving good, high quality and accurate advice. David Mizejewski, the author, has sound knowledge and experience which he shares with us. After reading this book and following it's instructions, I was able to have my backyard certified a Wildlife Habitat.

Unlike some other books, this one doesn't give outdated information. Invasive or harm plants are identified and cautioned against. If a plant is invasive, beneficial native alternatives are suggested.

The book is full projects that are actually do-able. And not ones that require several power tools. So, read this book and learn about attracting birds, butterflies, mammals, reptiles and amphibians to your garden. And go on safari by steeping out the back door.

3-0 out of 5 stars An accurate portrayal of the loss of a spouse
I did not purchase this book because the main character was bisexual.I read the book descrition and I wanted to see if Ms. Knight could accurately portray the myriad of emotions involved in losing a soulmate.Being a widow myself I can honestly say that she did a pretty credible job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Butterfly Tattoo
Wow did I love this book. Completely off the regular beaten path the Butterfly Tattoo demonstrates that love in its real form can come in any package.

Rebecca is a scarred (both internally and externally) former actress who is trying to put her life back together after a brutal attack from a fan almost killed her.Michael a very recent "widower" is also trying to pick up the pieces after his partner dies and leaves him to raise their young daughter by himself. The unconventional love in this book at first had me a bit leary.Michael is gay.He had been with women before his long-time partner Alex and him fell in love but Alex was his soul mate, his one true love.In Michael's mind no one, especially not a woman would ever replace Alex. But then Michael meets Rebecca and he realizes his sexuality is not determined by his lover's gender but by the person they are inside and he is in absolute love with Rebecca.

This book tore me up.It was about a couple in love trying to get past not only Michael's having been in love with a man for years also his grief for his dead lover, and his guilt for having fallen in love again. If I could give this book 10 stars I would.I loved the characters, the story itself was amazing and perfectly delivered right up through the ending.I could not put this book down and read it in one sitting through the weee hours of the night.

I actually got this book from the library not wanting to drop the high trade paperback prices. After reading it though I bought it.The Butterfly Tattoo is a definate re-read over and over for me.I will be keeping my eye open for more from this author.

4-0 out of 5 stars I loved this novel
This novel was all that was promised.I loved the pure emotion found in each page.I was brought to tears more than once, and that takes a lot.I loved Rebecca's coldness at the beginning of the novel and how it was so apparent that it was to protect herself.I loved how just broken Michael was at the beginning and how they both eventually worked through their drama to find away to each other.I will say that the one problem that I had with the novel was the changing first person viewpoints.I loved the novel through and through, but the way it would switch between the first person of Michael's p.o.v. and Rebecca's p.o.v. took me out of the emotion and the novel too much.I still loved this novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Senstively told story overcomes a few literary shortcomings.
Heart-broken widower Michael Warner, dealing with single parenthood after the car accident that killed his partner, Alexander Richardson, and left their adopted 8-year-old daughter wounded inside and out, but alive. At his job as electrician at a Hollywood studio, he comes into contact with Rebecca O'Neill, former darling of the prime-time sitcom whose encounter with a deranged stalker leaves her permanently disfigured. Switching career gears to a behind-the-scenes script developer and producer, Rebecca leads a near-hermit's existence. But she connects with Michael's daughter unexpectedly one afternoon, and Michael and Rebecca find themselves drawing each other out of their shells as they grow closer together.

The gay guy and tragic princess? As romantic leads?? SAY IT AIN'T SO!-That's what I thought when I first came across this recommendation. Because nothing - and I mean nothing - grosses me out quicker than a romance story where the gay character is "magically cured" of their homosexuality by the overwhelming ardor of the won't-take-no-for-an-answer hetero. In fact, if anything even smacks of that kind of absurdity, I usually say a curse under my breath that the author's computer catches a memory-wiping virus and I move on. Rapidly. However, I do believe in the fluidity of human sexuality, à la the Kinsey scale, so it isn't inconceivable to me that a gay person could fall in love with their previously non-preferred sex, or vice versa. (For historical examples, see Hollywood fashion icon Gilbert Adrian and composer Cole Porter, for starters.)

It's written in first-person, alternating perspectives between the 2 main characters with headers at each chapter to remind you in whose head you're eavesdropping. I didn't love that, but it wasn't so horrible it kept me from reading the book. I will admit to nearly throwing it across the room at the point where Ms. Knight describes Michael as "straight as an arrow" before he met his gay partner. Oh how convenient - he's not really gay (this is me, rolling my eyes like a crazy gimbal). Wellll, maybe yes, maybe no, but Knight redeems herself by making this about Michael's emotional life, rather than his sexual one. Although there's no doubt that Michael and Alex shared a sexual relationship, neither is there any doubt about their love affair.

Butterfly Tattoo isn't a porny, salacious account of gay and straight sex. In fact, there's only one sex scene in the entire book. Instead, it's a really sensitive exploration of grief, loss, and love and how we can't compartmentalize those emotions. Michael is shattered by the loss of his partner and the continued emotional withdrawal of his daughter, Andrea. Even as he forms a connection with Rebecca, Alex's memory haunts Michael, who we soon see is somewhat of a willing victim to the soul-crushing depression of losing a loved one. How does he reconcile falling in love again with honoring the memory of his spouse of 13 years? The sexuality issue is only part of that.

Rebecca's character I found very sympathetic, thanks in large part to the novel's setting. A disfigured character who hides from life like some sort of phantom of the opera would ordinarily bore me, but because Rebecca was a successful television actress and still lives/works in the film industry, it makes perfect sense. Certainly it underscores the insecurity that Rebecca lives with after being the victim of a violent crime. There are other physical complications as well, which effectively handicap her in her career.

For me, however, the magic in this book is Michael's story, which is as much about learning to compromise with himself as it is about his sexuality. Knight never shrinks from Michael's internal conflict. He compares holding Rebecca in his arms to his late lover's masculine form - he can't help it. He compares himself as a struggling father with what he remembers as Alex's effortless grace. He's an outsider: to his gay friends, his conservative family, his daughter and - in his grief - to Rebecca. The intricacy and honesty in his emotional journey is heartrending, yet utterly triumphant.

There are parts of the book I didn't care for - in addition to the awkward alternating first person, there were some one-dimensional tertiary characters and a conflict wrap-up that seemed a little heavy-handed. But I'm glad I got to know Michael Warner, and I'll remember him for a long time

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars - lovely story of love without labels
Set in modern day.Rebecca is former sitcom star who was attacked by a stalker fan 3 years ago.She almost died and is left with scars on her face and torso. She suffers from asthma and panic attacks and lives in a state of fear. Michael's lover was killed by a drunk driver almost a year ago leaving him with their 8 year old daughter. He struggles with depression and can't seem to move on. Michael's lover was a man. Rebecca and Michael meet during a power outage at the studio. Michael seems to flirt with Rebecca and she feels more confident around him because it's dark. Each is drawn to the other. Rebecca feels safe with Michael and he thinks that she can help his daughter deal with her own scars from the accident.

The story is about healing and finding love outside of labels.Instead of pigeon-holing the main characters' feelings the author allows them explore them and let them blossom into a true love not based on sex but rather on who the person truly is.It really is a lovely story. It's also very different from many other romance novels out there which makes it worth reading because it is so unique. Read in one day. PG-13. B+. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For a little older children
This is a very nice book with lots of beautiful illustrations and my son and I enjoy reading this book. The only problem that I have with it for now is that the book is made for a little bit older children than the other Sibylle Von Olfers books, like "The Story Of The Wind Children" or "The Story Of The Snow Children" etc. This book seems to fit better kids of age 6 and older, even so, we do enjoy the illustrations. ... This book is a great book to have in the classroom.I used this for a literacy pack that children can take home and read with their families. Then I give them activities to do with the book so that they can remember the life cycle of the butterfly. This book is very in depth of how the butterfly goes through its cycle of life.It has beautiful photographic pictures that are realistic. This is important for children to see in real life.I am glad that I chose this book to use in my home literacy pack.I had to have an informational book and a fiction book.I felt that this book was the most appropriate one from all the butterfly books.I recommend this book to all teachers.

2-0 out of 5 stars An Asia style penthouse forum letter
Ive been in the P4P scene for quite a while..I have been a webmaster and moderator for a few major Asia forums boards in thailand/philippines. The book butterfly, gives an individual's view on what every man's dream is...a place where you can go pick up girls, bring them back to the hotel, and screw them. The only thing that's mmissing this book, is the actual P4P (pay 4 play) scene. A lot more than picking up girls and screwing them. He fails to talk about the "hunting" aspect of finding the perfect barfine. The corruption that goes along with the P4P scene. He also fails to give a more in-depth look into the Pattaya scene. I did enjoy the opening part of the book, as well, as the chapter on the killing fields, but I think this book could have been alot better, if he would have add adventures in Pattaya, instead of the 2-3 pages of how he was screwing the girls. If i want to get a smut book, I would have gotten a penthouse forums mag!! Just my take on the book "The butterfly" For a noobie into this world...it would be a facinating book, but for an average monger...he misses the whole scene!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Like being there!
Steve puts in words, eloquently , to explain to those that have never been to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, what it would be like being there!
Only those of us that have been there could ever really know! But this book is as close to being there as one can, without going!

Whatis it like to visit a sexually un-repressed country? It is a freedom, a natural sensation, of having no shame, or worried about sin!Coming from USAwhere sexual repressed state sanctions approved by the Churchare in effect, controllingthe masses to keep them compliant, to the easy attitudes there, is to me like being Alice in Wonderland, free and exciting!Funny that even today the Evangelicals still send missionary teams over there to preach the sins of the flesh, they try to sell their snake oil even there!

Overall the book is hard to put down, very descriptive, well put to every detail!

3-0 out of 5 stars Use or abuse?
The language tips are very helpful.I was not comfortable with the author's description of some of his experiences which seemed to border on abuse. It is one thing to be interested in having sex.It is something else when you have absolutely no concern for the feelings of your sex partner.I fear the effect that this book could have on all sexual activity in Pattaya.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
"First of all I found only a speck of learning about Asian culturehere. The title is misleading because it states Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines. The only place in the book that mentions the Philippines is that the author has a girlfriend there. The book has 3 sections. Thailand, Cambodia & back to Thailand. He doesn't mention that most of the girl's in the massage parlors ( as opposed to bars ) are held against their will. That their parents have sold them into prostitution. Maybe he is not aware of it, I don't know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caterpillars Bugs & Butterflies
I have purchased most of the books from this series. The illustrations are beautiful and they are excellent non-fiction books which are beneficial to help students pass all the tests they are required to take in public schools.I highly recommend this series of books to help develop an appreciation of the natural world for our generation of nature deficit children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to garden bugs
I bought this for my 4 year old son after finding a couple of tobacco hornworms in the tomato garden last summer. The author did a good job balancing the content and picking the most popular bugs to cover. The tomato hornworm is covered, but not tobacco hornworm. But that's just a little detail I can easily gloss over. Although the text is small, the illustrations are so good that they hold his attention while I read to him. His favorite pages are the tomato hornworm, banded woolly bear caterpillar, ladybug, and katydid. He also loves the how-to page on capturing a banded woolly bear in the fall and watching it turn into a moth in the spring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bug Facts
Grandchildren enjoy this book to help identify what they have located outside while they play. Lot of info for young children to understand. The 8 yr old really enjoys reading it and learning about the different subjects. Good series of books!

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but not too comprehensive
I ordered this for my sons fifth birthday and while I found it cute, it is just okay for identifying caterpillars as it is not very comprehensive. Our childrens librarian recommended: Peterson First Guides: Caterpillars by Amt Bartlett Wright and that has been much more helpful for identifying many more species of caterpillars, butterflies and moths. We live in Northern Indiana and many of the caterpillars we have found have not been in this book but in the Peterson's book. My son loves it, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning tool.
I purchased 5 books of this series for my five year old daughter for Christmas, as she wanted a "field guide" like her older sisters when exploring our 45 acres of woods. After reviewing these books before giving them, we decided to use them as part of our science program for our home school. These books have bright and colorful pictures, short accurate explanations of the animal, their habitat, eating habits, and even some of the popular anecdotes that go along with the animal. (For example, the myth about the stripes on the wooly bear caterpillar in relation to the length of winter)It has the appropriate warning for studying certain animals. What we enjoy most is that many of these animals can be found in our back yard to furthur study. Each book deals with three types of animal, such as Caterpillars,Bugs, and Butterflies. They are separated into sections dealing with each type.At the end of the section is a wonderful hands-on project the child can basically do on their own within the recommended age group (9-12) or with some assistance for a younger age group like my daughter. My 5 year old begs us to read these books to her and loves the projects.I highly recommend this book and others in the series for those who want their children to learn about nature and how to respect it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great Start, But Takes Time to Learn the System...
I have folded several basic butterflies, and this kit looked like just the thing to create more life-like butterflies! AND IT CAN!

However, I was disappointed with a fewthings:
1)The COLORS used in the instructions on several butterflies were the REVERSE of the photo of the finished model (all the paper in the kitis colored on BOTH sides). So, the first time you make one, it is easy to become confused.

2) For EVERY model the first several steps are from a set of folds which are diagrammed only in the first half of Book One. This means that while working on the BUTTERFLIES in Book One, you do a lot of page turning back to the intro until you have memorized those steps (about a dozen butterflies or so).

3) There was only ONEtypo, but it was a whopper - the duplication of a full paragraph on page 37 in book 2.

4) Often the text or picture of a complex fold was just too small for my aging eyes to see well enough to understand. I had to use a magnifying glass. Maybe that is a criticism of me and not the book....

Having said all that, once you "get it" and can remember the basic folds, you can stop all the page turning. Then you can see where the artistic details come into play, and you can see the genius of the author, as well as end up with some BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLIES !!.

I cannot really recommend this kit for beginning Origami students. But for motivated, intermediate or higher folders, this could give you hours if not days of challenging work with wonderful results. It just takes patience to follow LaFosse's technique.

Also, I would suggest to (or beg of) the authors that they put out a 2nd Edition (to remove that typo & fix the colors in either the photos or the diagrams) and to completely separate the introdutory fold diagrams (put them ALL in Book One) from the individual Butterfly instructions (put them ALL in book Two). Also, please make the books full-size (8.5"x11") with all the images bigger to match, especially the enlarged detailed folds. Now THAT would be a 5-star kit and well worth recommending to anyone! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars English version
My only real issue with the score is that the Italian is below the English and in Italics.

3-0 out of 5 stars When is Butterfly Performed in English?
I purchased this score for a performance of Butterfly in July and August of this year. You would think a Ricordi score would have the Italian text on top. But, no, on top is a larger type English text.Underneath is the barely legible Italian text.Maybe I'm missing something, but most of the Butterfly recordings that I'm familiar with are sung in Italian.Perhaps singing the opera in English was an earlier practice and I've heard "Un bel di sung" in English, but really it isn't standard practice for this opera anymore, and Ricordi should update their score.I literally had to take corrector tape and white-out the English, so I would only have the Italian below my music. I prefer to write out my own translations anyways, so the English took up precious score space, when the Italian could have been made far more legible.

Other than that, and a few mistakes here and there, the music is clear, and the score is a tough one.I've spilled some coffee on the cover, and it wiped off well, with no damage. The binding is also pretty strong. ... Read more

Product Description
This new edition of the classic handbook describes how to attract butterflies and other beneficial and beautiful insects to you garden.

Butterfly Gardening presents everything the gardener needs to know to create intricate, small-scale ecosystems in an urban or suburban setting that can substitute for the rapidly vanishing habitats that are essential to the survival of butterflies.Contributors to this volume include Miriam Rothschild, an eminent entomologist, avid butterfly gardener and expert in wildflower conservation, who describes the life cycle of the butterfly, how and what they see, and how this relates to "gardening with butterflies."Landscape architect Mary Booth provides imaginative garden designs and easy-to-follow direction for designing and planting.Edward S. Ross, pioneer of close-up nature photography, discusses observing and photographing butterflies.

The book also includes a "Master Plant List" of species that attract butterflies, butterfly food plants listed geographically, seed and plant sources, a list of gardening and conservation organizations, and a bibliography of books and periodicals about butterflies. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars weird & wonderful
Hmmm. What to make of page 21 which describes an univited human visitor to the authors butterfly garden stripping naked and plunging into her bluebells (is that what they're calling it now?)?

This is obviously not your run-of-the-mill butterfly gardening book to say the least. The essays are beguiling, the photographs are excellent and every now and then you read something like page 21 and go WHAT???

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much activist nagging, not enough focus on gardens
This was a promising-looking book.It has a good number of very interesting butterfly pictures, attractive diagrams of bedding layouts, and photos of useful flowers. However, I was greatly disappointed by two things.

First, the personalities of the multiple authors intrude too much in the book. Not only do we read too much of "I" this and "my" that, but the potted biographies are sometimes much too long, self-regarding, and irrelevant. Are they promoting butterflies, or themselves?

Second, I quickly got the sense that the butterfly-gardening discussion is really a Trojan horse for environmental activism. It lectures repeatedly at the reader, when the reader feels like saying:"Stop trying to convert me!I bought the book, didn't I?I'm happy and willing to make a garden that butterflies might like, and that should be enough."

The moralizing starts with the preface, and continues with the introduction by E. O. Wilson.Wilson wags his finger at "prideful Homo sapiens," saying that people are mostly "indifferent or repelled by the generality of insects." Apart from stating that Homo sapiens has every reason to be proud of its accomplishments, I would like to add that people have (naturally) feared insects for excellent reasons:mosquitoes bring malaria, the West Nile virus, and other diseases; pests spoil crops and contaminate food; and the bubonic plague, spread by rat fleas in Europe in the mid-1300s, wiped out one-third of the human population. So don't lecture us about how we're just mindlessly prejudiced against insects (or anything else for that matter).

There are several books on this subject currently available. If you are looking for a book by garden-lovers, for the benefit of other garden-lovers, I would advise you to choose one of them.I would certainly recommend Attracting Birds and Butterflies by Barbara Ellis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource...
BUTTERFLY GARDENING is a collection of interesting essays about butterflies.Chapters cover gardening tips, including an annotated list of plants that attract butterflies, and various other butterfly related topics such as: "What do butterflies see?"; "The struggle to survive"; "The life cycle of the large white butterfly"; and "Moths in the garden at night."If you love butterflies, you will probably enjoy this book but it won't go a long way toward helping you identify the Red Admiral you spotted on the Frikartii Aster yesterday. Another reviewer referred to this as a starter book, but I don't think of it as that at all although it does introduce a number of important topics.

The book includes a few "designs" for butterfly gardens, but they are general, and you would do better to use the garden designs in THE AUDUBON BACKYARD BIRD WATCHER.Let's face it, where the birds are is where their dinner is and dinner for birds is often the larval stage of moths and butterflies. The plant lists in BUTTERFLY GARDENING are adequate. Certainly the best thing to plant is Buddleia..the butterfly bush. This morning I saw three Monarch butterflies on my lavendar flowered Buddleia. The bush also supports a Grandpa Otts morning glory vine which produces flowers that are a dark bluish purple which changes to a purplish magenta. The butterflies were flitting from flower to flower and the color combo was a knockout.

This little book has much to recommend it.From BUTTERFLY GARDENING I learned the value of Parsley for larvae and that no matter how many butterfly boxes one hangs the little critters are visitors not tenants.

5-0 out of 5 stars best butterfly gardening book!
This book actually takes you past the very basic of plant lists (primarily US native plants) and arranging your garden (although it has all that too).It gets into things like a chapter on what butterflies see, their life cycles, butterfly watching tips, conservation, photography, pictures of caterpillars, etc.The photos are fantastic - not just pictures of butteflies on flowers but really close-up pictures of the wings, and butterflies in flight. They also include information on moths which is neat. This book is above and beyond the best book I've seen on butterfly gardening. For those who want to not only attract butterflies but also know what's going on and understand some of their world, this is a great book.I'd buy it all over again!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide book
I'm an up and coming butterfly gardener. This book had a great deal of information to share not only regarding what species of flowers to plant, but also about the life cycles of the butterfly and the importance ofplanting your garden for the entire life cycle - from egg, to caterpillar,to butterfly Discussion focused on butterfly/larva predators and howimportant they are to the cycle. Tips on photography, particularly in thedark were helpful. The pictures of the butterflies and flowers wereexquisite! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and the information in itwill go a long way in helping me create my dream garden. ... Read more

The knowledge of citizen scientists, biologists, and naturalists informs this book's coverage of every aspect of the monarch butterfly's life cycle (breeding, migration, and overwintering) from the perspective of every established monarch population (western North American, eastern North American, and Australian). In addition to presenting the most recent basic research on this species, The Monarch Butterfly contains the first publication of data compiled from two established citizen science projects, Journey North and the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project. It also reports for the first time on two major events of long-term importance to monarch conservation and biology: the creation of a larger protected area in the Mexican overwintering sites and a weather-related mortality event during the winter of 2002.Monarch butterflies are arguably the most recognized, studied, and loved of all insects, and the attention that scientists and the general public have paid to this species has increased both our understanding of the natural world and our concern about preserving it. The unique combination of basic research, background information, and conservation applications makes this book a valuable resource for ecologists, entomologists, naturalists, and teachers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Includes Much Interesting Information on Monarch Butterflies
Instead of repeating other reviewers, I focus on some basic data provided by this scholarly anthology. Did you know that, for some females, as many as 55% of eggs laid are infertile? (Prysby, p. 34). A female monarch may lay 300-400 eggs in her lifetime. (Oberhauser, p. 3). From hatching to pupation, the monarch larva increases its mass by a factor of about 2,000. (Oberhauser, p. 4).

Intentional outdoor protection of monarch eggs and young larvae, from predatory insects and other natural enemies, can increase the early 5-day survival rate from a few percent to nearly 40%. (Prysby, p. 31). Otherwise, the monarch survival rate up to the fifth instar larvae is on the order of 10-20%. (Prysby and Oberhauser, p. 19, Prysby, p. 27), and less than 10% [some say about 4%] to adulthood. (Oberhauser, p. 4).

5-0 out of 5 stars Helping to raise and understand Monarchs

Each fall millions of the orange and black butterflies fly south to Mexico for the winter, then return to the United States and Canada in the spring. These butterflies, which make up the entire breeding stock of monarchs for the Midwest and Eastern United States and Canada, form one of the best-known spectacles to nature lovers.

This book includes essays by 46 contributors from three continents. The essays fit well together because they document the 2001 Monarch Population Dynamics Conference, which aimed "to understand the annual dynamics of a migratory insect with a continental distribution."

The book is divided into four sections: Breeding, Migration, Overwintering and Integrated Biology. Each section begins with an overview chapter followed by more detailed chapters. A third of the book is dedicated to overwintering biology. Wintering populations are very compact (up to 60 million individuals per hectare) and vulnerable to winter storms and land use change. The book contains a chapter on monarch conservation policy in the Mexican wintering grounds. That description of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a highlight of the book.

The book encouraged me contribute to the Reserve through the WWF. That's a great way to keep current on new findings about these beautiful insects. It also encouraged me to plant milkweeds in our garden, a beautiful plant made more beautiful by making it possible to observe all phases of the Monarch's summer life span. The book offers other suggestions on how to learn more about Monarchs.

The articles are science based although aimed at "citizen scientists". I would have liked an introductory chapter covering essential features of the insect and its life in order to be better prepared for the more detailed analysis later in the book. (Milkweed, Monarchs and More: A Field Guide to the Invertebrate Community in the Milkweed Patch by by Ba Rea makes an excellent choice.) Even without such an introduction, this is an excellent study on this beautiful butterfly.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT A COFFE TABLE BOOK - GREAT STUFF HERE
Dispite the pretty cover to this work, this is not a "coffee table book" about pretty butterflys. This is an indepth collection of scientific articles addressing all aspects of the Monarch Butterfly.Sections include Breeding Biology, Migration Biology, Overwintering Biology and Integrated Biology. The collection of articles and monographs is very extensive and very technical. The reader should be warned that this is in no way a light read.On the other hand, if you want information on the monarch Butterfly, I cannot think of a single volume which will deliver more information that you have here.Recommend this speciality book quite highly. It is well worth the price. ...
