ADHD: Boarding Schools And Summer Camps A few weeks ago now, our family traveled from our home in _ to california tovisit family. List of boarding schools and Summer Camps for ADD/ADHD Children. http://www.christianadhd.com/bdgschool.html
Extractions: NOTICE: The following posts are taken from the Christian ADHD List List of Boarding Schools and Summer Camps for ADD/ADHD Children These have not been personally evaluated by ADHD of the Christian Kind so it is up to each family to personally check out any schools you may consider for your child. Please do this in person. An account of one member's visit to Bunker Hill Military School/Camp and an update on that school. My first thought was "oh no, not for a 6 yo." But then I finished reading your post. I know that it sounds like the only way out. Just seek the Lord's face on this one and do what He gives you the peace to do. My heart goes out to you. I don't know how you'll do it; but if the Lord truly wants you to take this step, He will give you the peace, grace, and funds to accomplish it. I do not know anything about boarding schools for ADD/ADHD. But I have a friend who keeps her autistic son in a home with very good results. However, she has had to move him several times to find a suitable program. Her case is very like yours- her son is high IQ, but was dangerous to those around him and to himself. He is not the typical autistic- he is high functioning. He requires 24 hour supervision and a challenging educational program. He understands what is going on in his head now, so he comes home on weekends and extended visits but asks to go back when he feels funny again.

The legacy of non-reservation Native American boarding schools can be traced to the ideas and efforts of one man, Captain Richard Henry Pratt. A cavalry officer who had commanded African American troops against American Indians in the west, Pratt developed his notion of "assimilation through total immersion" while in charge of incarcerated Indians at Ft. Marion Florida. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Pratt did not believe there were innate genetic differences in American Indians. For him, environment explained all of human nature. Using the specious analogy that slavery had assimilated African Americans, Pratt contended that non-reservation boarding schools could accomplish the same result for native peoples. In 1879, Pratt got his chance to test his experiment when an old army barracks in Pennsylvania was transformed into the Carlisle Indian School (a National Historic Landmark). With Pratt as both founder and superintendent, Carlisle became the model for federal Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) boarding schools across the Midwest and Southwest during the late 19th century. By 1902, there existed 25 federally supported, non-reservation boarding schools for American Indians across 15 states and territories with a total enrollment of 6,000 students. In Alaska, two boarding schools at Sitka and Wrangell were also created with the express purpose of providing manual and domestic training for a select group of Alaska Native children, those considered "the brightest boys and girls."

Books to Avoid: A Critical Review of Ann Rinaldi's My Heart Is On the Ground Here is a review of the book My Heart is On the Ground , a fictionalized story targeted for girls ages 9-12 of a twelve-year old girl's experience at Carlisle Indian School. The authors of the review criticize the book for its appropriation of Indian lives and literature, lack of historical accuracy, lack of cultural authenticity, and use of stereotypes, while presenting facts about the true story of Indian boarding school life and the girl on whom the book is based. Extractions: English-only law hits California schools Ban on bilingual education ignites protest By Audrey Alorro In June, Californians passed Proposition 227, initiated by Silicon Valley millionaire Ron Unz and demagogically named "English for the Children." Following after anti-immigrant Prop. 187 and anti-affirmative action Prop. 209, this measure effectively ends bilingual education statewide. As of August 3, it is illegal for teachers to help children in any language but English. A waiver provision allows parents to apply for bilingual education, but parents of at least 20 students in a given school must request this, and these students must all be labeled - and hence stigmatized - as having "special needs." Like Native American children in boarding schools before them, immigrants have been forbidden to speak their own language, separating them from their cultural identity, history, and means of interacting with family and community. This is cultural genocide.

American Indian Elder Cohorts School established in Pennsylvania beginning the era of boarding schools to force 1848 US defeated Mexico; california became part of US california Gold Rush http://www.gasi.org/diversity/cohort/amer_indian_cohort.htm
Extractions: American Indian Elders, through the decades of the 1900s Based on information in COHORT ANALYSIS AS A TOOL IN ETHNOGERIATRICS, Yeo, et al (1999), a publication of the Stanford Geriatric Education Center Used with permission of the SGEC faculty return to Cohorts grid. Elder in this description is used in an ethnogeriatric definition referring to years of age, which is different from the American Indian use of the term. The term "Elder" in the Indian community denotes a position of leadership, based on experience, spirituality, and community service, rather than chronological age. Therefore in working with Indians who are elderly, the distinction must be made between those who are "old" and those who are "Elders." "The American Indian experience is different from other ethnic minority groups in that 1) they were here first, 2) health care, education, and social programs were bought and paid for with ceded land, and 3) each elder is defined by the experience of the tribe to which he/she belongs and that tribe's relationship with the federal government. There are 535 federally recognized tribes and Alaska Native villages, and 126 tribes trying to get federal recognition or re-certification from previous "termination" of the tribe's relationship with the federal government" (Yeo, et. al.,pg. 11).

Extractions: Survey Project Jesse Trowbridge Ralph Gifford Starnes, APStats, p.6 Among the boarding student population at The Webb Schools, is there a gender related difference in the number of sodas consumed by students? We chose to do a simple random sample of the boarding population of the schools. To ensure that each school was represented equally, we decided to pick samples with equal numbers of boys and girls. The number 30 was chosen arbitrarily; it was small enough for us to actually complete our survey, and large enough to ensure that we had enough data to represent both student bodies. 30 Boys Questionnaire Random Allocation 30 Girls Questionnaire The actual Survey was administered orally, and answers were recorded anonymously. We asked only how many sodas the subject consumed in a week, and where they were got those sodas. The number of sodas consumed was a raw numerical value, while we categorized where the sodas could be acquired and recorded numerical values. Below are our recorded results. The number at the bottom is the total (sum) for that category. The graph below is a histogram of the values when arranged in ascending order.
