Thank you, teachers, students, professors, lovers of history, and fellow Web historians, for writing to let me know how useful you find it. I was inspired to create this site by an interview with Jack Granatstein on CBC He had just published his book, Who Killed Canadian History? He emphasizes the importance of studying Canadian history in Canadian schools. As a student, many years ago, with a somewhat idealized view of things, I felt that our teacher was really limiting our understanding of the events. I got quite upset at the treatment of Louis Riel Riel is now an icon for the problems not only of oppressed individualism but of oppressed cultures in general and his death is one of the central issues in understanding Canada and the problems it faces in the future. here (or here ) for an American author, James Loewen, who feels as I do.

Grades 7 and 8 students from across Canada were invited to create timelines of what they think are the most important events in Canadian history. The contest opened on International Children's Day (Dec. 14, 1997) and closed on March 20, 1998. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges, including: Some overall comments from the judges: The judges note "that all the main winners submitted webpages or video entries. Entries in which students spent a lot of time developing a web-format timeline seemed to have the best-developed historical content as well. But we were glad to receive many non-web entries, even pencil-on-paper ones." The judges also note that "the most successful entries tended to come from schools where teachers were able to assign lots of time to this contest." Maybe in future... with advance notice, more classes will be able to integrate CBC4Kids history contests into their scheduled curriculum. Meanwhile, we salute the many kids who worked up contest entries on their own time!

Extractions: OTTAWA - Governor General Roméo LeBlanc will host the 3rd annual Governor General's Award for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History during a ceremony at Rideau Hall, on Saturday, November 21, 1998, at 10 a.m. The Award is a project of Canada's National History Society (CNHS). Following the award presentation, the Governor General will unveil the new official millennium map of Canada and present teacher Peter MacLeod and two students from Philemon Wright Regional High School in Hull, Quebec with signed copies. Produced by Geomatics Canada from the Department of Natural Resources Canada, copies of the new map were sent to 204, 000 classrooms across Canada as part of an initiative suggested by the Governor General and spearheaded by Canadian Geographic Enterprises and other sponsors. Governor General LeBlanc, a former high school and college teacher, will address those attending the ceremony, following which he will present to 12 finalists a certificate in recognition of their nomination and a cash prize of $500. The Award recipient, chosen from the finalists, will receive an honorarium of $5,000, a medal and a computer for his/her school. The 1997-1998 competition was open to all teachers of Canadian history in grades 1 to 12 (and OAC in Ontario). The definition of Canadian history was extended to include social studies, economics, political studies, and geography. The finalists were selected by a bilingual National Judging panel of educators and historians.
