Extractions: Using the "postmodern choreographer's tool box," the class will focus on making and finding fluent movement while addressing the infinite possibilities of manipulation of developed phrases. The end result will be not just choreographic sketches, but finished short solos that will exist as authentic and innovative portraits for each of the choreographer participants. Repertory with Donna Scro Gentile of Sean Curran Company The emphasis will be on both process and product in the formation of a work created on the participants that will be inspired by Curran's preexisting repertory. Work will include 'Folk Dance for the Future', a piece set to traditional Celtic mouth music incorporating modern, ballet and Irish dance vocabulary, as well as just plain Irish spiritedness mixed with lots of Curran-esque humor. Curran uses an athletic approach to making and finding movement that leads to inventive phrases, robust physicality, and original partnering. "My approach to choreography is concerned with both a physical and emotional virtuosity. I search for a visual abstract language that can convey, poetically, a world of human feelings and conditions. Although the content of my work is post-modern in its sensibility, my approach to composition and production values is informed by the modern dance tradition." - Seán Curran
