This new NSF initiative is providing the opportunity to rethink technological education, said Doyle Daves, dean of the School of Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Speaking at a June 1315 workshop held at RPI for participants in the initiative, Daves pointed to new tools and developing interactions across campus faculties that have already begun to emerge from the initiative. The three initial lead institutions of the initiativeDartmouth College, RPI, and the University of Pennsylvaniareceived awards from NSF in September 1995. Penn and RPI have formed consortia of five and six institutions, respectively, to carry out their efforts. Dartmouth enlisted the assistance of collaborators from more than 20 institutions. Also participating in the workshop were representatives of Indiana University, Indiana UniversityPurdue University at Indianapolis, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Oklahoma State University, the University of Nebraska, and COMAP, Inc. These institutions are expecting awards in the early fall. According to DUE program director Lee Zia, the projects are comprehensive in that NSF expects them to serve as national models for improving student understanding in the mathematical sciences, better integrating mathematics into other disciplines, and improving learning and teaching in the mathematical sciences by incorporating other disciplinary perspectives. He adds, The initiative was established to improve the mathematical problem-solving capabilities of undergraduate students in all disciplines in which mathematics is relevant.
