Mixing Majors And Non-Majors type of course necessary for preprofessional majors (ie biology, Pre-vet, pre-dental,pre-med)? a third for A P for two-year health careers programs http://biowww.clemson.edu/biolab/mixed.html
Extractions: SUBJECT: Should majors and non-majors courses be mixed? DATE: 2/97 Dear Biolabbers: I need your help. I teach in a community college biology department and my primary teaching assignment is our introductory biology course. We Non-majors course. It carries the Texas common course numbers Biol.1406 Several of my collegues have expressed doubts about this arrangement in the past. Questions such as: 2). Is this type of course necessary for pre-professional majors (i.e. biology, Pre-Vet, pre-dental, pre-med)? 3). Could majors be served by our existing Botany / Zoology two semester sequence? I really do enjoy reading the many regular contributors to this list /and the not so frequent contributors also ;-). I would love to see a thread on this subject and all are encouraged to share your thoughts on this, but I am especially interested in the senior level institution BioLab members comments. We want to prepare our students in the best way possible so they are ready to step in to your upper level majors courses and not miss a step. What are your observations along this line?

Most of us have been trained in the classical theory of decision making, where it is important to gather information about all the possible alternate solutions to our problems. Based on good research data, the single best course of action will emerge. The AVA is undertaking a number of research projects to identify the needs of its members. These include: A survey on the readership of veterinary publications in Australia and the attitude of veterinarians towards the AVA and its services by Quadrant Research. In February, a four page questionnaire will be posted to 1000 veterinarians. If you receive a survey, please complete it so that the AVA can obtain as much information as possible. Indicators of a successful practice will be examined by John Collins and Robyn Whitely of the WC Company to determine the feasibility of the AVA introducing a distance education veterinary practice management program. Twenty practices throughout Australia will be interviewed and a further 200 will be mailed a questionnaire. Again, if you are included in the sample, your cooperation will ensure that the best decisions are made about future AVA activities.

Buxton 342-E Bicentennial Education Center UNO Lakefront Campus New Orleans, LA 70148 cbuxton@uno.edu Abstract Introduction Science literacy has been a centerpiece of the current wave of science education reform for over a decade now. In its current iteration, this topic was first raised in Science for All Americans , which stated in its opening lines, "This book is about science literacy. Science for All Americans consists of a set of recommendations on what understandings and ways of thinking are essential for all citizens in a world shaped by science and technology" (p. xiii). Later in the introductory chapter, SFAA goes on to define science literacy in the following way: Science for All Americans is based on the belief that the science-literate person is one who is aware that science, mathematics and technology are interdependent human enterprises with strengths and limitations; understands key concepts and principals of science; is familiar with the natural world and recognizes both its diversity and unity; and uses scientific ways of thinking for individual and social purposes. (p. xvii) Several years later, the Benchmarks for Science Literacy elaborated upon this definition, tying science literacy to a more generalized view of literacy for the new century:

Extractions: CLASS NOTES November-December 2000 Twenty years ago I, Jill Abrams Klein, submitted handwritten class columns. Fast forward to the 21st centuryPCs and e-mail are the way to go! After a five-year hiatus, I am pleased to be rejoining the correspondent team. Reunion weekend, or how-do-you-relive-4-years-in-4-days, was expertly hosted by classmates Jodi Diehl Nestle and Nancy MacIntyre Hollinshead, who absolutely outdid themselves. The receptions, life in U-Hall 2, the tents complete with Hot Truck (some classmates had the foresight to "preorder" their PMPs, MBCs, and Wet Garlics), mocha chip ice cream, and the WEATHER! Yes, after a brief bit of rain, the weekend cleared to reveal days that we so rarely enjoyed as students. Thank you, Jodi and Nancy. We look forward to our 25th! Our class participation at Reunion 2000 broke all sorts of records as over 250 classmates were joined by family and friends. A big round of applause to the Cornell Fund leaders, Hugh Ten Hagen and John Megrue, who motivated and cajoled us to give a 20th Reunion year record for donors and dollars raised. The hard work of their committees paid off handsomely, and we thank all classmates who contributed to Cornell. So many people and so little space to quickly share news on our returning classmates. After 20 years, we are looking great! And still showing lots of energy. Classmates returned to the Hill from everywhere to renew friendships and to introduce non-Cornell spouses and children to Cornell.

There were apparently only a few requirements for everyone else on this cruise-you must have married a cousin whose parents married their cousins, you must smoke (preferably heavy, unfiltered cigarettes), and you must be able to consume your considerable weight in food at every meal. Looking like a convention of sumo wrestlers, never has so much polyester been subjected to so much stress in such a short time. I would also tell you that a considerable number of these folks actually wore Speedos out by the pool. The experience prompted me to begin my much dreaded "three-day annual fitness program." That's up a day from last year (no pain, no gain) because this year I am going to do it right! Bob now has about 11 months before he gets another crack at me, and he's chosen to use the time in a most innovative way. He called me this week, and left a telephone message with an enthusiasm worthy of Debby Brown. He and a number of other young doctors like Chris Ewin and Susan Blue and Dick Schaffer are actually getting excited about the possibility of what a new building for the Academy of Medicine could do for the society and the community. The opportunities for educational activities and community service are extremely appealing. There is a grassroots passion arising that you can just "feel."
