Thousands of people gather for food fair, whether its in Market Square on St. Thomas, or in Cruz Bay, St. John or at the Christian Schjang Vegetable Market in St. Croix; if its a Carnival food fair it is sure to have fried fish, lobster, jonny cakes, shrimp, vegetable, beef and salt fish pates, kalaloo, tamarind stew, mango and pineapple tarts, maubi, passion fruit juice and a whole assortment of other Caribbean delicacies. Food Fair is an exciting mix of local foods and colorful displays of arts and crafts. The food and art fair is made up of many small booths and tables. You can walk through the booths and tables and purchase locally made crafts, arts and paintings or get local food, deserts and drinks. Woman, men and children work in these individual booths selling foods and handicrafts. Individuals set up booths in some cases, others function as fundraisers for local churches and schools and others by local restaurateurs. Local crafts presented at the fair include Caribbean dolls, iguana dolls, handmade coconut birdfeeders, coconut monkeys, paintings and more.

Extractions: The Caribbean islands Leonard Yuen gives a diary account of his tour of the Caribbean and takes a look at the different ophthalmic screening programmes The Caribbean islands are often seen as a homogeneous tropical destination, but in reality each island has its own distinctive "personality." Their reputation for warm weather, spectacular scenery, and friendliness have made them a target for holiday makers, and now they are becoming increasingly popular as an elective destination for students wanting to escape the winter months. Common health problems on the islands are diabetes and hypertension. Diabetic eye disease comes in many forms, including diabetic retinopathy and cataracts, which accounts for 50% of blindness (an estimated 17 million people) worldwide. Many complications can be detected early and treated, so screening programmes for diabetic eye disease are essential. With this in mind and, after a great deal of time and planning, I arranged to island hop to compare differences in health care and culture. Visiting 13 different islands gave me insight into the impact of politics and the importance of funding and education to establish effective screening and a good healthcare system. It was intriguing to see vast differences among the islands in spite of their close proximity.

This exhibit of materials from the Benson Collection's extensive holdings highlights the many contributions by Blacks to the contemporary culture of Latin America and the Caribbean. The introduction of African slaves to the New World by Western European powers transformed all parties concerned. During the course of five hundred years Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans formed an amalgam that is now culturally complex. The resultant fusion expresses itself in religion, politics, language and literature, art, music, and dance.
