Extractions: The mission of the Tropical Prediction Center (TPC) is to save lives and protect property by issuing watches, warnings, forecasts, and analyses of hazardous weather conditions in the tropics. TPC products are generated for use in both the domestic and international communities. To fulfill its mission, the TPC is comprised of the following branches: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) maintains a continuous watch on tropical cyclones over the Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Eastern Pacific from 15 May through November 30. The Center prepares and distributes hurricane watches and warnings for the general public, and also prepares and distributes marine and military advisories for other users. During the "off-season" NHC provides training for U.S. emergency managers and representatives from many other countries that are affected by tropical cyclones. NHC also conducts applied research to evaluate and improve hurricane forecasting techniques, and is involved in public awareness programs.

Extractions: Courtesy V. Vincente, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration T Ewel and Whitmore 1973 Columbus visited Puerto Rico on his second voyage in 1493; the island remained a Spanish colony until it passed to the United States after the Spanish-American War of 1898. The island has been in a commonwealth relationship with the United States since 1952. The Virgin Islands have been governed by several countries, including France and Denmark. After the United States purchased the islands of St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix from Denmark in 1917, they became an unincorporated territory of the United States. The remainder of the Virgin Islands are possessions of Great Britain. The many islands that make up the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are separated by water today, although at the time of maximum lowering of the seas during the ice ages, Puerto Rico and most of the Virgin Islands, including St. John, St. Thomas, and the British Virgin Islands, were one piece of land called the Puerto Rican Bank ( Pregill 1981 ). The islands of Mona (Puerto Rico) and St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands), though, were never connected to the Puerto Rican Bank because they were separated by channels of deep water. At the end of the last Ice Age (about 8,000 years ago) and after sea levels rose, the Puerto Rican Bank fragmented and separated into Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Because the small islands were connected with most other land masses in the Puerto Rican Bank until fairly recently in evolutionary terms (Pregill 1981), none of them have more than a few unique species. In contrast, Mona Island and St. Croix have higher numbers of endemic animals and plants because these islands have been isolated from Puerto Rico for a longer time and may never have been connected to other islands of the Puerto Rican Bank.

Extractions: May 1997 Foreword Since colonial times, the Caribbean has been a favorite place for American visitors. In the past 50 years, tourism to the area has increased greatly, and today millions of U.S. citizens visit the islands every year. The majority of these visitors have a safe trip. To help you have a similar experience, the Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs has prepared these tips for you. Consular Affairs provides services to Americans who travel or reside abroad. If, in spite of your best precautions, you find yourself in difficulties abroad, please contact the U.S. consul at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. There is a list of U.S. embassies and consulates in the Caribbean at the end of this publication. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable experience during your visit to the Caribbean! Originally named the West Indies by explorers seeking a sea route to India, the Caribbean is the region of tropical islands in the Caribbean Sea situated between North and South America and east of Central America. The islands extend for nearly 1,700 miles from Cuba in the west to Barbados in the east. Note: There are special conditions relating to travel to Cuba, including U.S. Treasury restrictions

Extractions: Consular Information Sheet This information is current as of today, Cayman Islands May 30, 2002 COUNTRY DESCRIPTION: The Cayman Islands are a British dependent territory located approximately 100 miles west of Jamaica. Tourist facilities, including first-class hotels, are widely available. ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizens traveling as tourists or attending meetings can enter the Cayman Islands with a valid U.S. passport, a naturalization certificate or an original, certified birth certificate and photo identification. U.S. citizens traveling to the Cayman Islands to work must obtain a temporary work permit from the Department of Immigration of the Cayman Islands; telephone number from the United States: 1(345)949-8344. There is a departure tax at the Cayman airport for all persons 12 years of age and older. Tax is included in the airfare. In an effort to prevent international child abduction, many governments have initiated procedures at entry/exit points. These often include requiring documentary evidence of relationship and permission for the child's travel from the parent(s) or legal guardian not present. Having such documentation on hand, even if not required, may facilitate entry/departure. SAFETY AND SECURITY: On average, one American citizen per month drowns or suffers cardiac arrest while snorkeling or SCUBA diving in the Cayman Islands. These deaths may be attributed in part to tourists attempting to do more than they are trained to do or may be due to poor physical conditioning or pre-existing medical conditions that are exacerbated when snorkeling or diving. Inexperienced or first-time divers should obtain proper training, and may wish to undergo a physical examination before diving.

Extractions: of the Pacific and Caribbean Back to Table of Contents " ...until climate models that can resolve regional scales are available, these models offer the best `what if' scenarios available for consideration of vulnerabilities to climate change." Note about General Circulation Models This paper's discussion about possible futures and their implications was taken from different sources based on a variety of general circulation models (GCMs) but is particularly based on the results of the Hadley Centre and Canadian Centre model simulations used by the National Assessment process. GCMs are tools used by scientists to construct plausible estimates of potential changes in climate. It is generally agreed that these models provide reasonable estimates of changes at the global and latitudinal scale. However, for a variety of reasons, significant differences can exist on a regional scale between model outputs. Among these reasons are limits in the computational resources needed to resolve regional-scale topography and surface features. Because GCMs are coarse and do not accurately represent changes at the regional scale, caution should be used in interpreting the details of outputs from these models. However, until climate models that can resolve regional scales are available, these models offer the best what if scenarios available for consideration of vulnerabilities to climate change.
