Extractions: by Amber and Whitney Introduction Jacques Cartier was a French explorer. He discovered the St. Lawrence River. Early life Cartier was born in Saint Malo, France on December 31, 1491. His dad explored the Mississippi River. His dad was a fisherman and he liked to go fishing with him. Cartier heard stories of explorers, and he wanted to be an explorer so he went to Dieppe and studied navigation. Voyages The king of France wanted him to go look for the Northwest Passage. He began his 1st voyage on April 20, 1534. He left St. Malo with 110 men on the Atlantic to find land for France. He landed on Newfoundland. The ships were called Grande Hermine, Petite Hermine, and Emerillon. The king wanted him to go again and when he did he went through the St. Lawrence River in 1535. When he got to the end it was too cold to sail any more so he turned back and left the St. Lawrence River. His voyages in Canada were in 1534, 1535, and 1541. Discoveries and Claims He discovered the St. Lawrence River. France wanted spices, riches, and animal fur. The animal fur was for coats and hats. They did not like the taste of meat, so they wanted spices. Conclusion He died in St. Malo when he was 66, in the year 1557. He never found the Northwest Passage but Jacques Cartier found the St. Lawrence River.

Extractions: UNTIL WELL INTO THE 16TH CENTURY, EUROPE'S KNOWLEDGE of the nearest parts of North America was uncertain. It was Jacques Cartier's three voyages between 1534 and 1542 that helped discover the New World and began to give shape to Eastern Canada. Since then, many explorers have travelled the country to experience and uncover its infinite beauty. By the mid-19th century, most of the main geographical features of Canada were known and mapped. So, today, explorers challenge themselves and Mother Nature in hopes of finding new and exciting places and adventures to share with the world. Extractions: European exploration in the region would have to justify itself not only in terms of a route to Cathay, but also in terms of what of value might be found on the New World itself. Later Exploration John Cabot may have discovered an ocean route from Europe to North America, but the information he returned with did little to clarify the geography of eastern Canada. Whether this was the northeastern tip of Asia or one of the islands that geographers believed to lie out in the Ocean Sea nobody yet knew. Over the next quarter century, however, a succession of voyages undertaken by several Portuguese explorers as well as the discoveries of Giovanni Verrazano, sailing for the king of France, proved beyond doubt that something resembling a full continent lay astride the route to the east. Section of Gerolamo da Verrazzano's map of the world, 1529. (44 kb) Enthusiasts continued to believe that there might be a narrow channel through this landmass or at least a northern, navigable waterway around it. Further European exploration in the region, however, would henceforth have to justify itself not only in terms of a route to Cathay, but also in terms of what of value might be found in the New World itself.

Extractions: Jacques Cartier was born in 1491 in a small French fishing port called St. Malo. When Jacques was six years old, the English explorer John Cabot sailed along the coast of Newfoundland and wrote in his journal that "the fish so plentiful they sometimes stopped the progress of the ships." After Cabot discovery the fisherman of St. Malo made the dangerous trip each year to fill their nets. When Cartier was a teenager, he joined the fishing fleet and sailed to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. Most of the sailors knew little about navigation. They sailed to the New World in convoys, hoping they wouldn't get lost. They were not interested in exploration. They only wanted to fill their boats with fish and return home before the fish rot. Cartier was more interested in navigation then he was in fishing. He became an expert at charting currents and reading a compass. Cartier worked as a navigator for trading ships and fishing convoys for many years. Although this work was satisfying, Cartier had a dream. He wanted to explore new waters.
