His dad explored the Mississippi River. His dad was a fisherman and he liked to go fishing with him. Cartier heard stories of explorers, and he wanted to be an explorer so he went to Dieppe and studied navigation. Voyages The king of France wanted him to go look for the Northwest Passage. He began his 1st voyage on April 20, 1534. He left St. Malo with 110 men on the Atlantic to find land for France. He landed on Newfoundland. The ships were called Grande Hermine, Petite Hermine, and Emerillon. The king wanted him to go again and when he did he went through the St. Lawrence River in 1535. When he got to the end it was too cold to sail any more so he turned back and left the St. Lawrence River. His voyages in Canada were in 1534, 1535, and 1541. Discoveries and Claims He discovered the St. Lawrence River. France wanted spices, riches, and animal fur. The animal fur was for coats and hats. They did not like the taste of meat, so they wanted spices. Conclusion He died in St. Malo when he was 66, in the year 1557. He never found the Northwest Passage but Jacques Cartier found the St. Lawrence River.

When Cartier was a teenager, he joined the fishing fleet and sailed to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. Most of the sailors knew little about navigation. They sailed to the New World in convoys, hoping they wouldn't get lost. They were not interested in exploration. They only wanted to fill their boats with fish and return home before the fish rot. Cartier was more interested in navigation then he was in fishing. He became an expert at charting currents and reading a compass. Cartier worked as a navigator for trading ships and fishing convoys for many years. Although this work was satisfying, Cartier had a dream. He wanted to explore new waters.
