Extractions: COMPUTATIONAL CARTOGRAPHY is intended as an exciting, informative, and personal hands-on exploration of computers and maps. It is an inquiry into how we represent reality and how we come to know and understand the world around us through the processes of computation and cartography. We will examine computers and the construction of maps from their bits, bytes, dots, colors, phosphors, and inks, all the way up to their spatial placement on paper, glass, and other media. We will deconstruct the cultural contexts of their creation, distribution, and usage. We will expose the coevolutionary mechanisms linking culture with technology that are expanding cartography's terrain across the sciences, humanities and arts. We will critique traditional maps of spatial land use patterning as well as modern postmodern , and posthuman maps of other physical, sensory, and cognitive domains. This will include cross-sensory mappings such as visualization and sonification. We will assess the shift from static maps, representing the fixed state of the world, to dynamic maps, representing processes of a changing world. This will lead us into multiagent spatial models and simulations, those "living" maps that evolve and change completely on their own. These are the stuff of cutting-edge scientific computing, entertainment, and creative science fiction. We will look at examples developed for computer gaming, distributed artificial intelligence, cellular automata, artificial life, artificial societies, artificial culture, virtual reality, virtual environments, augmented reality, evolutionary computation and the emerging military/entertainment complex.

Extractions: Index from Here: Schedule The Big Questions Course Bibliography Course Policies Resources Previous Class Version of 4 January 2003 Geography 465 covers the analytical view of cartography with particular reference to its implementation with computer tools. Analytical cartography has typically taken map projections as a classic prototype for the study of transformations of spatial data. GIS has expanded the range of transformations to consider. In 1976, Waldo Tobler published a paper about the curriculum for a course on analytical cartography. He observed that 50% of what one learned seems obsolete in five years. He wanted his courses to have a half-life of 20 years. This course is designed with the same goal, using the evidence of Tobler's baseline 26 years ago. Policy Students registering for 465 should have some exposure to cartography or to other mapping sciences (surveying, photogrammetry, photo interpretation, remote sensing). In addition, students must have a course on the principles of GIS (such as Geography 460 or 461). Students

In 1994 a merger occured with the Laboratory of Geographic Information Systems and GIS tools were brought into editorial works of the Atlas of Poland. Since then, our aim is to combine cartographic know-how, craftmanship and advanced technology. Contracted by Surveyor General of Poland. After many years, the Atlas of the Republic of Poland - most extensive, country-wide cartographic piece of work, is completed. Our Department prepared the General Concept, carried out all cartographic editing and most of the technical editing, as well as co-ordination of contributions by 164 authors. Extractions: Library Map Locations The primary collection of maps and cartographic materials is the Map Collection of the Earth Sciences and Map Library located in 50 McCone Hall There are other locations within the Library system which collect maps. Original rare and manuscript maps are housed in The Bancroft Library, except those in East Asian languages which are housed in the East Asian Library. Many maps can also be found in books and periodicals throughout the library. See Finding Maps in Books and Periodicals for more information on these sources. Printed Material The Map Collection has the largest collection of maps in northern California and one of the largest university map collections in the United States. There are over 360,000 maps in its collection, issued by local, federal, commercial agencies, foreign governments, and international organizations. Originals for 20th Century, and facisimile maps for pre-1900 maps cover all countries of the World at various scales. The collection contains general maps as well as thematic maps covering a wide variety of cultural, economic, and physical subjects.
