Oneida County Asylum for the Mentally Ill. The research question for this project investigates the health consequences of long term exposure to an institutional environment. In this study I utilize historical documents and skeletal remains associated with the asylum which was in operation from 1860 to 1895. These sources of data provide information on the daily activities, experiences, quality of life, and health conditions present at the asylum. Since the institution was a custodial facility, where inmates remained during the extent of their adult lives, it is possible to test for the consequences of institutional life. This study demonstrates implications for the consequences of medical treatment and helps to elucidate cultural understandings of a variety of diseases, especially mental illness. This project has spawned over a dozen conference presentations, two articles, and a monograph is currently being prepared for publication as a book.

These underwater "mountainsides" (the peak being the island itself) have left divers and snorkelers awestruck for more than 40 years. (If you don't at least catch a glimpse of this underwater world, you're missing the main attraction.) There are other reasons why travelers keep arriving in the Cayman Islands in large numbers, though. One of the best is that it offers a largely stress-free place to vacation. Crime is relatively rare. Islanders are friendly, speak English and enjoy the highest standard of living in the Caribbean. And the beaches are wide, sandy and fringed with palm trees.
