Extractions: Cellular Biology Cells are the structural units of all living things (with the possible exceptions of viruses and prions). Prokaryotic cells lack a formed nucleus to house the genetic material (DNA) and nuclear proteins called histones. These cells, found only among bacteria, are small (1-5 microns), have a cell wall outside the cell membrane and lack membrane bound organelles . Eukaryotic cells are larger, have a membrane bound nucleus and various cellular organelles. They also have histones in association with the DNA in the nucleus. Except where specified, this site is dedicated to animal eukaryotic cell biology. Cells arise in the body from progenitor or stem cells and become specialized for one or more distinct functions such as contraction, nerve conduction, secretion, absorbtion, or protection. This process of cell specialization is known as cell differentiation. Stuctural or morphological modifications during differentiation are accompanied by biochemical changes. For example, formation of red blood cells requires the differentiating cells to make specialized proteins for oxygen transport and jetison the nucleus.

Extractions: These organelles are the power houses of the cell and contain the molecular machinery for the conversion of energy from the breakdown of glucose into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the cell. The energy stored in the high energy phosphate bonds of ATP is then available to power cellular functions. Mitochondria are mostly protein, but some lipid, DNA and RNA are present. The unique structure of these organelles can be seen under the electron microscope. These generally spherical organelles have an outer membrane surrounding an inner membrane that folds (cristae) into a scaffolding for oxidative phosphorylation and electron transport enzymes. Most mitochondria have flat shelf-like cristae, but those in steroid secreting cells may have tubular cristae. The mitochondiral matrix contains the enzymes of the citric acid cycle, fatty acid oxidation and mitochondrial nucleic acids. Mitochondiral DNA is double standed and circular. Mitochndrial RNA comes in the three standard varieties; ribosomal, messenger and transfer, but each is specific to the mitochondria. Some protein synthesis occurs in the mitochondria on mitochondrial ribosomes that are different than cytoplasmic ribosomes. Other mitochondrial proteins are made on cytoplasmic ribosomes with a signal peptide that directs them to the mitochondria. Extractions: Introduction Yale's Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology offers a wide-ranging program of study and research leading to the Ph.D. degree. The program is supervised by approximately thirty faculty members working in six areas: Students whose interests overlap two or more of these areas are encouraged to develop a special program of study for themselves. In addition, students may develop programs of study in conjunction with other University departments such as Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Chemistry, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, or with other schools within the University such as the School of Medicine. The Department is located primarily in the twelve-story Kline Biology Tower and in the Osborn Memorial Laboratories. These are located on Yale's Science Hill, adjacent to Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Geophysics, Forestry and Environmental Studies and the Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Extractions: Research Areas Biology is a broad field of study, and its breadth is reflected in the research interests of the faculty members who seek to define biological processes in molecular terms. Individual research topics include the role in vivo of an enzyme with a catalytic RNA subunit (Altman); engineering new RNA and DNA enzymes by rational design and in vitro evolution (Breaker); exploration and control of signal transduction pathways using chemical probes (Crews); the evolution of metabolic pathways (Ornston), and signal transduction in plants. Molecular technology from DNA cloning to targeted mutagenesis is being applied and developed in order to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying many biological processes. Insight into these processes can be greater when it is gained in the spectrum of diverse experimental approaches that our division employs. Our studies will eventually bring together molecular biology, evolutionary biology, cell and developmental biology, and genetics. Our faculty are at the forefront of new advances in the life sciences fostered by new information in genome structure and function, and new developments in techniques for studing developmental and cellular processes. MCB research interests cover three broad areas: F irst year MCB students do two laboratory rotations and take three core courses . At the end of the first year students select a dissertation lab. We offer weekly seminars by internationally reknowned scientists and our students are encouraged to present their results at national and international meetings, for which they receive financial support. A ll MCB Ph.D. candidates are fully supported. In 2002/2003, the package of financial support includes a full tuition scholarship, a stipend of $18,000 and health and dental insurance.
