The History Of The NIST/EPA/NIH Mass Spectral Database only the automation of individual m/z mass spectral Unfortunately, the true historyis not so clean and today in thousands of analytical chemistry labs around http://pubs.acs.org/hotartcl/tcaw/99/feb/history.html
Extractions: The History of the NIST/EPA/NIH Mass Spectral Database Developed in the 1970s, this system has become the backbone of today's GC/MS identification methods. Although MS has been around for nearly a century, before 1970 such instruments generated data of only the most rudimentary type. Most laboratories used mass spectrometers as one part of a complex identification process to determine the chemical structure of natural products, such as alkaloid drug candidates, or to determine whether an organic synthesis had been carried out properly to generate a compound of the correct molecular weight. MS data often were combined with NMR, IR, and UV spectroscopic data to give insight into the overall structure of a complex molecule. There were no data systems, and, actually, none was needed. For structural analysis, it was necessary only to introduce the sample directly to the mass spectrometer and generate a single representative spectrum to be manually deciphered. First, one had to identify the m/z value of each peak by manual counting (28 for nitrogen, 32 for oxygen, 149 for a phthalate ester impurity coming from plastic tubing, and so on). After the
Links For Chemists / Virtual Library Chemistry Section University of Liverpool provides links to chemistry companies, reference material, and organizations. Texts in English, German, and French. http://www.liv.ac.uk/Chemistry/Links/links.html
Extractions: Links for Chemists is an index of over 8,000 Chemistry resources maintained at the University of Liverpool Department of Chemistry . The index features a collaborative effort to index University Chemistry Department websites, we provide the links to UK University Chemistry Department websites. For the industrial chemist we have a listing of well over 2000 Chemical Company websites and thousands of other useful chemical resources such as links to Chemistry journals and chemical society (ies). For the chemist in full time education there are pointers to hundreds of resources on atom (s), molecule (s), the periodic table of the elements and organic reaction mechanisms, these are also useful for educators In addition to links for the Chemist working in the traditional analytical, inorganic physical, organic and theoretical chemistry links, the index points to reference sites for those involved in related fields such as the pharmaceutical or petrochemical industries. There are also resources such as MSDS and safety sites which will be useful to workers in practically all industries. This guide offers a list of possible sources for finding biographical information on chemists, with the emphasis on the past. While chemistry has a rich and extensive historical record, biographical information is often limited to brief notes about dates, education, employment, and major accomplishments. Substantial background information is rare, unless the person is very famous. American Men and Women of Science.
Extractions: Information Sources Resources by Subject Lists major electronic and printed information sources available both in and outside the Library. The arrangement is by broad subject, corresponding in most cases to the academic Departments in the University. Click on the appropriate letter, or browse through the alphabetical listing.
University Of Dundee Museum Services - Chemistry Collection FRISCHFEUER! Highlights from the chemistry Collection. The Carnelleychemistry laboratory was built in 1883 and extended in 1889. http://www.dundee.ac.uk/museum/chemistry/frischfeuer.htm
Extractions: When the University was founded as University College Dundee in 1881, it was envisaged as a modern, scientific institution, and chemistry was one of its key subjects. The Carnelley chemistry laboratory was the first building to be purpose-built on the new campus, and it rapidly established itself as one of the country's leading centres of teaching and research. One report of 1889 claimed that "few laboratories in the kingdom yield as much work per cubic foot per year". This exhibition by the University Museum Services features rare scientific instruments and teaching material from the Chemistry museum collection, as well as early images of the Carnelley Building courtesy of the University Archives.
