Extractions: Huixtepec Water Project Program Description Safe Drinking Water: A Global Crisis The United Nations has reported that it would take an investment of approximately a half trillion dollars and 10 years to adequately meet global drinking water demands. The UN Secretary General noted that "member states and the donor community are far from meeting this challenge." According to a U.S. State Department official, water is an issue that has to be done in an integrated fashion on a local, regional basis. A pioneering partnership between the American and Mexican Red Cross societies and the U.S. Chlorine industry has taken a positive step in this direction with a new innovative project designed to address the water crisis in a small Mexican village. Huixtepec Water Project Until now, the people of Huixtepec turned to untreated springs and streams for water. Often, these sources were shared with local livestock and other animals, which significantly increased the risk of waterborne disease. While household bleach was sporadically dumped into streams to kill bacteria and other microbes, no measurements were taken to ensure effectiveness. Much like the aqueducts that brought clean water to the Roman Empire from springs miles outside the city, a simple gravity-fed treatment and distribution system has been constructed in Huixtepec. The Water Relief Network is providing materials, including five kilometers of vinyl pipe and disinfection chemicals. Huixtepec residents were responsible for constructing the system and will maintain it into the future. Mexican Red Cross officials will train residents on water quality testing and disinfection. The system brings water from a spring outside the village to a holding tank where the water is treated with chlorine-based water disinfectants. Following treatment, the water travels through vinyl pipe directly into the village. Because the system is gravity-fed, it does not rely on electricity which can be expensive for communities living at subsistence level.

Extractions: Stephen Beasley-Murray Thirty years ago when I took AP Chemistry, I cannot remember ever having a lesson in Chemistry. What theory I had was given standing around the front bench. Theory was explanation to justify why we were doing the laboratory work for that day. There were no chairs or tables, except for the electronic balances kept behind paneled glass. Coming back to High School, we have come full circle. Labs are the explanation to justify the paper work and theory for the lesson. Previously I had never thought of Chemistry as theoreticalbut it was the hay day of kitchen chemistry when photographic memories were a blessing. Much of what I learned then is not in High School books anymore. Memory now plays a small part. Chemistry is more like Physicstheory learned with mathematics. Chemistry was exciting and dangerous. Now its danger is recognized as more insidious and liability incalculable. Contemporary intellectual elegance in Chemistry and technological advances have streamlined and made redundant the endless chemical analyses and titrations of a former era. However I feel we are left with a crisis. The swing from kitchen to computerized chemistry has emptied the motivation and drama from Chemistry.

Particularly appealing are biomimetic catalysts that imitate the ability of natural enzymes to perform selective reactions with good turnover and rate. If such catalysts are more rugged than proteins, and simpler, they would be preferable to natural enzymes, and could have different selectivities. Approach: We will build on recent advances in these laboratories by which novel catalysts have been synthesized using two or four cyclodextrin units to bind a substrate onto a metal catalytic unit in water solution. They promote selective fast reactions whose course is governed by the geometry of the complexes. We will examine the epoxidation or hydroxylation of other important substrates by our existing catalysts, including those that can lead to useful medicinal compounds that are currently prepared by less environmentally benign methods.

Extractions: Tips Turning water into wine is a classic magician's trick. The magician taps the edge of a glass of water with a wand and quickly pours it into an empty wine glass, and voila! The water is instantly changed into red wine. Pouring the wine into a third container changes it back into water. Professional magicians sometimes use a pitcher or carafe with a hidden compartment to create the illusion. But anyone who has done an acid-base titration in freshman chemistry knows a simpler way to do the trick that is just as convincing- so long as no one insists on tasting the "wine" or the "water". Fill a glass with water. Make the water slightly alkaline by adding a few drops of sodium hydroxide solution. Hide a few drops of phenolphthalein solution in the bottom of a wine glass. Phenolphthalein is an organic compound that is colorless in acidic and neutral solution. It has an intense red color in alkaline solution. Pour the alkaline water into the wine glass to convert the phenolphthalein to its red form. Hide a few drops of a concentrated acid in the bottom of a third glass. When the "wine" is poured into this glass, the acid neutralizes the base, and the phenolphthalein is converted back into its colorless form.
