Extractions: Reading Clouds in Chile Returning to the tiny seaside village of Chungungo [pop. 330] in northern Chile is quite often an emotional experience for Pilar Cereceda, geographer at the University of Chile in Santiago. Fourteen years ago, Chungungo was one of hundreds of villages in the region without a local source of fresh water. The village sits in Chile's north coastal desert, just south of the Atacama, the most arid desert in the world. The inhabitants used to have water trucked in from 40 km away, at a cost of US$8 per 1,000 litres. The average family had only fourteen litres a day, and during drier periods, just three. Now, fourteen years later, an innovative fog catchment system, financed by IDRC and the Canadian Embassy in Santiago (with scientific support from the University of Chile and the Catholic University), provides the village with a fully functioning local water supply system. There are a multitude of very good parks here, and plenty of opportunities for fine adventure travel. Chile is justly famous as the location of Torres del Paine, considered by many to be the finest nature travel destinations in all of South America. For anyone who has ever been fascinated by geography, the long, impossibly thin line of Chile has always produced a tiny moment of astonishment. Chile stretches over 4,300 km (2,700 mi) along the southwestern coast of South America, a distance roughly the same as that from San Francisco to New York, or Edinburgh to Baghdad. At the same time, its width never exceeds 240 km (150 mi), making the country more than eighteen times longer than its widest point. In the center of the country, however, is a long and expansive river valley, a five hundred mile corridor occupied in the north by vineyards and great farms and in the south by primeval forests and enchanting lakes. Santiago, the capital, anchors the northern and more prosperous section of the central valley. The lush Lake District to the south, however, is the homeland of Chile's indigenous peoples, the Araucanians.

After 12 year of primary and secondary education, students apply to continue their education at the university level. The university system consists of 25 traditional universities and 40 private universities. Traditional universities include public and private universities with partial public funding. Students take a national test and apply, in a centralized process, for admission to one of the traditional universities. Private universities were created after 1980, and do not receive direct public funding. Each private institution defines its admission process. Undergraduate programs are 8 to 12 semesters in length, leading to a degree of licenciado or a professional title. Graduate programs include magister (master) and doctorado (Ph.D.) and require one to three years of further study and the submission of a thesis. Most universities work on a semester basis, and the grading system is from 1-7, with 4 (suficiente) being the lowest passing grade. Chile follows the Southern Hemisphere calendar . When applying for an academic year exchange, students will find it beneficial to begin their studies during the U.S. second term. The Chilean academic year runs from March to December.
