Also spotlighted were AAJA's Executive Leadership Program, a Boot Camp by the Bay for 42 high-school journalists, and skills training for professional and student journalists across convergent media platforms. The leadership program develops the leadership skills and performance of mid-career Asian-American journalists. While the 2000 census has revealed significant Asian-American population growth, an increasing number of AAJA members are choosing to leave or are losing their jobs in newsrooms across the nation because of the tough economic times. "The number one issue is retention," said Aki Soga, Burlington Free Press business editor and outgoing AAJA vice president for print. "The issue was underscored by the spate of layoffs and buyouts this year, which resulted in a number of our members leaving the news industry," said Soga.

Some citizens feared that their culture was being threatened or that they would lose jobs to newcomers willing to accept low wages. In 1924 Congress passed the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act. For the first time, the United States set limits on how many people from each country it would admit. The number of people allowed to emigrate from a given country each year was based on the number of people from that country already living in the United States. As a result, immigration patterns over the next 40 years reflected the existing immigrant population, mostly Europeans and North Americans.

Extractions: Asian began arriving to this country en masse right around the Civil War period. Chinese immigration was sparked by the gold rush in California starting in 1849 and continued as Chinese laborers found work on the Northern Pacific Railroad and in the mines. In 1884, there was large-scale immigration to Hawaii by Japanese people coming to work the sugar plantations. By the turn of the century, there were 120,248 foreign-born Asian immigrants living in this country, predominately on the West Coast. By 1930, that figure had more than doubled.[1] Moving Memories , a documentary produced by the Japanese American National Museum and hosted by Star Trek star George Takei, features home videos taken by several of these early Asian pioneers. Since the lives of Japanese immigrants during the 20s and 30s were not recorded in early newsreels and motion pictures, amateur footage taken by businessmen, priests, teachers, etc. are an invaluable addition to the historical record. The clips in Moving Memories , divided into sections by filmmaker, depict family life, community events, and economic development during that period.

Other Surgeon General's Reports Approximately 4% of the U.S. population over 11 million people identify themselves as Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders (AA/PIs). The AA/PI population is expected to double in the next 25 years. About 54% of AA/PIs live in western States, especially California and Hawaii. 18% live in the Northeast, 17% in the South, and 11% in the Midwest. The AA/PI category is extremely diverse, with about 43 different ethnic subgroups. While the majority of AA/PIs were born outside of the U.S., a large proportion of Chinese and Japanese Americans are 4th and 5th generation Americans. Since the mid-1960s, the AA/PI population has grown rapidly with high rates of immigration from China, India, the Philippines, Korea, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia. Most Pacific Islanders are not immigrants, but are descendants of the original inhabitants of land taken over by the United States Hawaii, Tonga, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Caroline Islands, and Palau. AA/PIs speak over 100 languages and dialects, and about 35% live in households where there is limited English proficiency in those over age 13. Some subgroups have more limited English proficiency than others: 61% of Hmong-, 56% of Cambodian-, 52% of Laotian-, 44% of Vietnamese-, 41% of Korean-, and 40% of Chinese-American households are linguistically isolated.
