    Extractions: I don't use the Abeka readers for a formal reading program. I use them for supplemental reading. The stories are short enough for children to read and enjoy the stories. Andrea loves picking the readers to just read, and I know she is getting wholesome reading out of them. Christian Liberty Press Readers These 4 paperback books put out by Christian Liberty Press have been a joy to my girls while learning to read. Each lesson has a short word list and then a story for them to read. The first book starts out with the short a words, progressing to the other short vowel words and stories to go along. It is fun to see them just pick these books up on their own and see them work on the word list and then read the story. These are great for a child who knows their letters and sounds and are ready to put words together and start reading. Easy Grammar We used Easy Grammar 1 this year. (The regular Easy Grammar is advertised for grades 6 and up.) It's unusual in that it teaches prepositions first...you memorize the list of them...and then mark the prepositional phrases off before identifying the other parts of speech. I like it better than the other programs we've tried so far, and are going to use the *Daily Grams* starting next year. *Easy Grammar 1* definitely has enough practice. The other programs I've used didn't have enough practice, and I didn't want to sit there and make up sentences every day.

The English major offers course study in British and American literature, composition, and language that provides a background for graduate study. Both major and minor sequences are designed for future elementary and secondary school teachers. Students should also be aware that an English major or minor can be helpful preparation for other vocations. Business administration majors, pre-medical, pre-seminary, and pre-law students should consider the advantages of the discipline of English for their specializations. Students interested in communications (journalism, public relations, library work, etc.) need a strong background in English. General education requirements in oral communication for the English department are folded into English 201, 211, 272, 274, 276, 303, and 312, all of which have an oral presentation as part of the course. The capstone requirement is met through the development of a portfolio of selections from each major student’s writing in the four years. The field education requirement is met through an internship, either directed teaching with the education department or one worked out by the student with assistance from the student’s advisor. While some chapters will inevitably speak more directly than others to the interests of individual readers (dealing variously with classroom, academic, and social issues), I believe that each ultimately addresses questions that profoundly affect any of us involved in the teaching of English. What do we mean by “voice” in writing, and how might we guide students to explore it meaningfully when they read and write? How could “imitation” be reconceived in writing instruction by thinking in terms of dialogue? Above all, how can Bakhtin’s theories help us to think in new ways, maybe even more deeply, about how we teach writing? Chapters on voice and imitation are likely to be of particular interest to many writing teachers. Voice is a central concept in Bakhtinian thought, of course, and one that intersects with other definitions of the term, such as those associated with expressivist views. Farmer concludes, “Those who champion rhetoric of expres-sion tend to overlook the crucial roles that other voices play in constructing [one’s voice]”(57). Rather than being primarily per-sonal or unique, then, voice in writing is seen as socially situated.
