Extractions: A Newsletter of Eagles Byte Historical Research October 1997 No. 24 In its article on Argentina the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations states, "During the colonial period, there was little interest in Argentina." Maybe in the grand schemes of that era relatively little interest was given to the region that would become Latin America's second largest nation. But the nations of Europe weren't ignoring Argentina entirely. Spain obviously had firsthand involvement. Portugal coveted the area. There was at least one Frenchman residing in Buenos Aires. And two courts-martial related to Argentina occupied London courts. Even Haiti had its effect on events. When it overthrew its rulers in 1804, following the example of the United States, France became the second European nation to lose a New World colony. Ordinarily Portugal and Spain would have been concerned over their own colonies, but they had other worries as an ambitious Napoleon Bonaparte occupied the Iberian Peninsula in 1807 and 1808. England would now be concentrating on driving the Corsican out of the Peninsula. Some of their officers had just been practicing their own brand of point-of-a-gun diplomacy on the other side of the Atlantic in 1806 and 1807. And there's also that one Frenchman!

Extractions: For in my youth I 'as call'd away. When looking for information about burials in Provincetown, researchers are fortunate to have the benefit of the work of Lurana Higgins Cook, Hugh Francis Cook, Anne Gleason MacIntyre and John Stuart MacIntyre. This group of Provincetowners published a list of Provincetown Massachusetts Cemetery Inscriptions in 1980 for the Old Section of Cemetery Number Two, the Gifford, and the Hamilton Cemeteries. The old section of Cemetery Number Two began in 1800. It is located on the north side of Cemetery Road. Burials are still taking place in this cemetery and lots are still being sold in the New Section of the cemetery. Lot number 446 is a particularly poignant one. Here are buried three people who lost their lives during the 1898 Gale known as the 'Portland Gale,' who were passengers from the ill-fated Steamer Portland, after whom the storm was named, and the third froze to death in the rigging of the Schooner Lester A. Lewis that went aground in Provincetown Harbor during the same storm. Arctic explorer Donald MacMillan and his wife are buried here. It is here also that numerous artists are buried. Many of the artists' graves are marked with untraditional stones or sculpture. The grave of Nanno de Groot, who died in 1963, is one of these.

And speaking of Christian names, there now seems to be a marked reluctance on the part of officialdom to use the term Christian name; instead, when filling official forms we are asked for our surname, and then for our first name or names. Christian names are often said to run in families; that is, that the same Christian names keep on recurring in particular families in generation after generation. For centuries Mac Carthys bore such Christian names as Ceallachan, Cormac and Saerbreathach. These names are still popular with the Mac Carthys, but in their anglicised forms of Callaghan, Charles and Justin. Among the O'Briens it is not unusual to find the Christian name Kennedy. The history of this latter name goes back more than a thousand years, for Brian Boru's father was named Cinneide, and Brian was the ancestor of the O'Briens. Rory keeps on repeating itself in the O'Connor family. Almost everybody must have heard of Rory O'Connor, the last Ad R', or High King of Ireland; and that name kept on echoing down to the present century.

I wonder if anybody else recalls the piece? This is it: January scatters snow, And December brings the Christmas star. Last week I wrote about the Ballyguiltenane Rural Journal. This week my subject is the parish journal called "Oola - Past and present." The whole width - or is it length? - of County Limerick lies between the two places, Ballyguiltenane being almost on the Kerry border, Oola almost right on the Tipperary border. And if, as I stated last week, the Ballyguiltenane journal has a West Limerick - North Kerry 'bias,' the Oola journal has an East Limerick-West Tipperary 'blas'. Dermot O'Gorman edits the Oola journal, and in an editorial he refers to, among other matters, the planned construction of the Pallasgreen/ Oola/ Monard/ Tipperary/ Bansha by-pass, which will provide more efficient and speedy access for road freight from the West of Ireland to the ports of the south-east.
