Chris was smuggled across the Turkish-Iraqi border and walked all the way from the Turkish border to Duhok, Iraqi Kurdistan yesterday and today. It had been more than a day since we last heard from him and we were starting to worry. He is now in the Jiyan Palace Hotel in Duhok getting some much-deserved sleep. Chris raised money to go "back to Iraq" on his blog, Back To Iraq . He is a former AP and New York Daily News reporter who will bring us truly independent reports from inside Iraq. Permalink Comments (2) TrackBack (0) Mike Hawash in New York Times Four days ago Warblogging reported on the story of Maher (Mike) Hawash. Mr. Hawash's problems have now been the subject of an article in the New York Times . Mr. Hawash is a programmer, working at Intel, who was detained by the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force as a material witness. He has so far spent just about two weeks in jail without being charged with a crime and without being questioned or told why he is detained. He is being kept in solitary confinement.

    Extractions: Matthew and Nancy Ray Matthew and Nancy were residents of Mississippi during the Civil War, but first moved to Hempstead County, Arkansas in 1889. Matthew owned a farm near Glenwood up until his death in 1902 and is buried in Bethel Cemetery near Glenwood, Arkansas. After Matthew's death Nancy moved to Story, Arkansas to live in the household of a daughter, where she died in 1932. Matthew Ray enlisted in Company K of the 4th Mississippi Infantry in Grenada, Mississippi when he was 22 years old June 3 , 1861 his unit being sent to the defense of Fort Donelson, Tenn. He along with 12,000 other confederate soldiers were surrendered to the attacking forces of Ulysses S. Grant on Feb. 16, 1862 in a historic occasion where General Grant responded to the Confederate commander's question for terms of surrender with "I propose no terms other than unconditional surrender". Seriously ill at the time of his capture, Matthew was sent by authorites to a hospital in St. Louis and after a 5 week stay there he sufficiently recovered to be transferred March 31, 1862 to the Union prison of war facility near Chicago known as Camp Douglas. Camp Douglas during the month of February 1862 had a death rate among its prison population of 10%, the highest single death rate of prisoners for any Civil War prison North or South during the entire war. Exchanged in August of 1862 he rejoined the 4th Mississippi and was promoted to 2nd Sergeant. He was captured a second time on May 17, 1863 in the battle of the Big Black River which was Confederate General Pemberton's last attempt to prevent Grant's approach and eventual siege of Vicksburg. Matthew's second experience as a prisoner of war resulted in his being interred at Camp Morton, Indiana and Fort Delaware.

The state lost 119 officers and 1946 enlisted men killed, 82 officer and 1393 enlisted men died of wounds, 107 officers and 8906 enlisted men died of disease, 3 officers and 114 enlisted men committed suicide, 12 enlisted men died of sunstroke, 5 enlisted men were murdered, 3 enlisted men were killed after capture, 3 enlisted men were executed by the Confederates, 3 officers and 48 enlisted men died of miscellaneous known causes, 2 officers and 137 enlisted men died of unstated causes, and 21 officers and 685 enlisted men died as prisoners of war making the total 337 officers and 13,252 enlisted men. These figures are only the dead, many times this number were wounded or maimed in battle.

This page is meant to help broaden people's awareness of the role that California played in preserving the union. It is a work in progress, and useful information and suggestions are welcome. The State of California is credited with providing 15,725 volunteers to the Union Armies during the Civil War. The units provided break down as follows: two full regiments and one battalion of cavalry, eight full regiments of infantry, and one battalion of infantry called mountaineers. These men all served in the west and southwest. The First Regiment, Washington Territory Infantry Volunteers had eight companies that were recruited in California. California gold helped finance the Union effort. California soldiers helped keep the land between CA and the rest of the Union from anarchy. California soldiers helped keep the Confederates in Texas from spreading farther west.

    Extractions: Here on this page I want to give you some history about the city where I was born, Preston, Lancashire, England. Preston became a 'city' on March 14 2002 when HRH Queen Elizabeth II granted Preston cityhood for her Jubilee celebration, 1952-2002. Preston became the 50th 'city' in England on that day. The town is situated on a rise overlooking the Ribble valley, with the River Ribble almost circling the town. Archaeological evidence found along the River Ribble, suggests that there were settlers in the area as long ago as 8,000 B.C. Very little is known about early Preston, but it is probable that the 'church' acted as the nucleus of the towns beginings. One theory says that Preston was formed by monks from the famous monastery at Ripon in Yorkshire, after St. Wilfred aquired the lands 'juxta Rippel' ( by the Ribble) in about A.D. 670. This would explain how Preston got its name: it is derived from the words 'tun (i.e. town) of the priests'. PriestTown (Preston) There are many theories, this is but one. During the 'middle ages' Preston saw some very 'hard times', (Charles Dickens based his best seller, 'Hard Times' on life in Preston) local wars, poverty, and illness took a very hard toll on the people. From 1314 to 1316 three harvests in a row failed, many people died of starvation. For years the town stuggled to recover, then in 1348 a terrible outbreak of bubonic plague which had already ravaged the European continent spread through England. In Preston at least one third of the entire population-men, women and children- died of plague, mostly during the summer months. There were recurrences of plague in 1361-62, 1369, and a very serious outbreak some years later..1630-31.
