Extractions: College Issues Legacy hearing decision Halifax Dec. 1, 1999 A hearing committee decision concerning Dr. Ronald Edward Legacy, a family practitioner from Little Bras D'or, Cape Breton, has been issued by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia. The decision incorporates a Settlement Agreement relating to charges of incompetence laid against him by the College on February 12, 1999. The charges followed the College's investigation of complaints about Dr. Legacy's care of two former patients and an assessment of his competency. The charges include his failure to provide appropriate pain medication and hydration, to make a timely and appropriate referral, to maintain appropriate medical records, and to respond appropriately to the concerns of patients' family members. The charges also include general concerns arising from an assessment of his competency. Dr. Legacy has admitted to the charges as part of the settlement agreement with the College. In addition to imposing a reprimand, the decision requires that Dr. Legacy submit to an audit of his office and hospital practice within one year, and that he maintain his membership in and comply with the continuing medical education requirements of the College of Physicians of Canada. He must also pay a portion of the costs incurred by the College in its investigation and resolution of the case. His acceptance of the penalty means that a formal disciplinary hearing will not take place. A prior requirement that Dr. Legacy's practice be supervised by a designated physician has been lifted due to an improvement in his clinical performance noted by a physician assessment program at the University of Manitoba. These improvements follow Dr. Legacy's participation in a physician enhancement program developed by the Continuing Medical Education Office at Dalhousie University.

Extractions: Final Report Table of Contents Cross-College Issues The following section addresses issues related to the faculty, staff, and students of the College of Humanities. These issues are addressed in terms of specific recommendations for future development. In addition, the Committee's discussion of these issues has provided part of the context by which we assessed the individual units in the College. Faculty Development : Faculty development is a primary concern in the recruitment and retention of high-quality faculty. We therefore propose several measures that will facilitate faculty development by striking a better balance between teaching and research. These measures are, for the most part, low in cost and are designed to optimize existing faculty strengths. Support for emerging fields and recognized fields of interdisciplinary collaboration is also important in faculty retention and in attaining greater intellectual diversity. The Committee therefore recommends an active policy to coordinate the hiring of faculty in different departments who are working on areas of mutual interest, often through innovative modes of scholarly inquiry. We refer to this policy below as "coordinated hiring" to distinguish it from the policy of "cluster hiring" that has been approved by the College in order to increase the number of faculty members from underrepresented groups. The Committee believes that these two programs for hiring faculty might well, under certain circumstances, be pursued simultaneously.

He reads lips very well and the implant has helped him hear much better, but he still is deaf and can not follow along in a class room. We chose CSI because they boast they have such a great deaf and hearing impaired department. When we mwt with the disability office, they were great. They told us about all these options my son had. We were impressed. Well it seems that all they really can supply for him is a sign language interperter...my son dosent sign. He needs a c-print captionist....which they told us he would get, but now they can't supply that. Any suggestions?He has a tape recorder(i type every night his lectures for him), he has a note take and his interpeter tries to type whatever she can. He has been in school for 3 days and can not get involved in any discussions because by the time the interperter types, they have already moved on to a new discussion. Thanks for your help
