Extractions: People keep asking me: "How do you do it?" Especially beginning artists are often floundering, struggling with how and where to begin. Colored pencil seems like an easy medium to use, but to achieve any kind of mastery, it can become exceedingly difficult and unforgiving. There is only so much erasing you can do before the board or paper no longer yields the pigments without damage, and blending and layering can easily result in "mud." So, here I am going to present the basic process I use, although it will vary with each piece. Other artists work differently, but this is how my technique evolved over the years. The subject : while I am working from a photo, this is one of my dogs, so it helps to have her sitting next to me as I work. In any project, a good reference photo or two will go a long way toward a successful piece of art. Image size : 12" x 16". This is a common size for pet portraits and one that yields the desired results in a reasonable amount of time. I'll try to keep track of that time, too. Medium : Prismacolor Colored Pencils Note : the images of each stage are large to show better detail (30-50k). If you are on a slow connection, they will take a while to load. Colors are close, but not true; I can spend only so much time on correcting the scans, and we're talking about the overall process. I will list the colors I use in each step.

Extractions: Inspired by a five week journey through Eastern Europe in 1998, Denise Carey chose to create an original work of art taken from one of her destinations, Bucharest, the now non-communist capital of Romania. She was drawn to that part of the world after reading Balkan Ghosts , by Robert Kaplan. The work Bucharest is an architectural embodiment of a former beauty of a stunning city, now faded. To achieve this image, and retain shape and the delicacy of its coloring, she took many photographs of this particular structure. Then these were cut and selected parts of each were reassembled to create a new motif, from which the work developed. The work is finished with colored pencil and 100% rag paper.

In the News ARTISTS STATEMENT MIKE PEASE BACKGROUND I spent most of my pre-college years either in San Francisco, where I was born, or high in the California Sierras where my father had a ranch for many years. I still find that early mixture of Sierra wilderness and San Francisco urbanity to be very much part of me, and much of my life has been directed toward resolving my urge to be part of both those worlds. My interest in art surfaced at an early age and was supported by both parents. My father was an artist, and in my mothers family there were many artists, including one, Julio Ruelas, whose paintings are well known in Mexico. However, the art instruction I received in public schools was discouraging, and I dismissed thoughts of art as a career, deciding instead to pursue architecture. I completed the architecture program at UC Berkeley in 1 961, and embarked on a long career in that field. I have been both a practitioner and a teacher of architecture, focusing especially on housing and community design issues, and on the possibilities for integrating architecture with nature. Freehand drawing has always been an important aspect of my working method in architecture (several of my early architectural drawings are now in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), and I have taught freehand drawingto architecture students and othersfor most of my adult life.

Extractions: This portrait of Joseph A. Denison, was a Christmas gift for my wife's grandmother, Jessie Holsapple. Joseph, Jessie's father, died before she was born. He was a diary farmer in Sevier County, Tennessee, at the foot of English Mountain. The portrait was done from a large, faded, sepia photograph on cardboard. I find colored pencils an enjoyable, yet challanging medium. Since I may work several colors, layer upon layer, burnishing each with a cloth as it is put down, I also find it my slowest medium. The result looks more like a painting than a colored pencil drawing.
