Lesson at a Glance : Students will use the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands map to orient themselves to the points of the compass, identify the location of atolls or islands given map coordinates, and measure the distance between two points on the map. Key Concepts : Maps can be used to visualize the geography of a particular area and to determine the location of a place relative to other places. The map of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands shows the relative position of the islands and atolls from Kauai to Kure. The position of each island and atoll can be identified by using the coordinates of the map to determine its position relative to the Prime Meridan and the Equator. Degrees of longitude are measures of distance East or West of the Prime Merdian, and degrees of latitude are measures of distance North or South of the Equator. Objectives : Students will be able to: Identify the points of the compass (North, South, East, and West) on a map.

Extractions: Curriculum at T.C. Miller supports the VA SOL's in reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, and technology. We teach the SOL's through an integrated curriculum of units that reflect Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. These units were written by faculty members and are updated as needed for alignment with the state's standards. Our school also puts major emphasis on the fine and performing arts. Reading and Language Arts A minimum of two hours a day is spent on this subject area. Our integrated curriculum is taught primarily through our large tradebook collection with the district reading series serving as resource material. We also stress the use of word walls, daily journal writing, Compass Reading, and Accelerated Reader. Math A minimum of one hour daily is spent on mathematics. Flexible scheduling allows classroom and resource teachers the opportunity to work with large and small groups of students. Math is integrated into many other areas of the curriculum such as art, science, and technology. We also use software such as Compass Math, The Learning Company Math, and MathKeys in addition to interactive sites on the Internet. Science Science is taught in the classroom by grade-area teachers and also by a resource teacher with a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Our lab is fully-equipped with such items as electron microscopes and many hands-on science kits. We sponsor First Lego Robtic teams with our Mindstorm kits. Framatone engineers volunteered to work with our science teacher and Lego teams which then go on to competitions. Many of our integrated curriculum themes are science related, and are thus reinforced by other resource teachers, in addition to the science and classroom instructors. Groups of children are targeted for enrichment opportunities during the school day. A summer program and Saturday science classes are also offered in our lab. Upper unit students throughout our division receive monthly science labs from our science specialist.
