As technology progresses and children find even more need to use the Internet, parents must develop clear-cut and consistent rules while children are online. Establishing these rules can be quite a challenge for many parents. Since most children over the age of 10 or 11 probably know more about the Internet than mom or dad, it's imperative that parents continue to absorb what's available to children and communicate and teach responsibility while spending time online.

Here is a web site I found by going to another web site which searches for information on the Internet. I went to Alta Vista (http://www.altavista.com) and entered the words "how can I learn about the internet?" Alta Vista's "search engine" came back with a ton (350,000+) of websites. I visited the first few and found one that seems to be a good article for a beginner. You can do the same! Here is a brief description of this site which you can visit by clicking on any of the words in blue: Learn About The Internet Top of Page Back to Perform Home "A Parents Guide to the Internet" Published by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Research and Improvement, Office of Educational Technology, this publication is a good introduction for anyone who wants a better understanding of what the "Internet" and "World Wide Web" are. Here is a quote from the booklet: "For many of us, computers are exciting, but puzzling. Our children know far more about computers than we do! How do we bridge the gap between what our children know and what we know to be able to assist them with their school work and help them get ready for the information age of the next century? After all, being able to use technology is rapidly becoming a requirement for being an informed citizen and a productive worker.

Bill Preston has the unusual title of "writing consultant" for the Academic Skills Center at the Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education at the University of Rhode Island, assigned to work with a history class filled with adult students. The 46-year-old student is also a computer tutor, helping fellow students ease on to the technology superhighway. "When you're out of school for a number of years, your skills are dull. You need to know how to reawaken your talents," said the man who only two and a half years ago thought technology had passed him by. "If it weren't for the Academic Skills Center, a number of students would probably give up. You have to remember we are not kids here," he said. "Most of us are working, many of us have families.
