This increase works out to an average annual rate of 0.3 percent a year, according to NEA's report Rankings and Estimates 2000-2001 . During this same period, school revenue receipts, total expenditures, and per-pupil expenditures increased significantly. "As more money was invested in public education, teacher salaries remained stagnant - all while the U.S. was in a time of economic expansion," NEA President Bob Chase said. "If we, as a nation, are serious about student achievement, we need to make sure we can attract and retain high-quality teachers. Nothing has a more profound effect on a child's achievement than the quality of his or her teacher, and it's hard to convince someone to stay in the classroom when the salary is so low."

Extractions: of Connecticut Braille Literacy Advisory Council The Braille Literacy Advisory Council of Connecticut is a result of the passage of Public Act 00-127 by Connecticut's General Assembly. It was established to implement the recommendations of the Braille Literacy Task Force of 1999. The Council consists of nine members, all volunteers, who meet regularly to study the education of blind and visually impaired children in Connecticut. They are charged with reporting back annually to the General Assembly, and have the power to initiate legislation if needed. The nine members represent a sampling of concerns in the blind community and are as follows: The goal of the Council is to review the availability of services for Connecticut's visually impaired students, find potential problems and barriers, and recommend solutions for improvement.
