In the early 1800s, it was the intellectual capital of the U.S. It has one of the finest harbors on the east coast. Originally, it was almost an island, connected to the mainland by "Boston neck", a strip just wide enough for one road (one of the reasons it could hold out so long in its rebellion against the English). [This page was last updated on December 20, 2001] By Governmental Agency By Organization Connecticut State Department of Education The Bureau of Curriculum and Instruction portion of the Connecticut Department of Education 's site contains standards, frameworks, and some curricular material for the various subjects dealt with in Connecticut's Common Core of Learning (revised 1998) and for the professional knowledge and specialized instructional skills expected of educators by the state's Common Core of Teaching (1999). The department's site also offers Student Assessment information and reports. The National Assessment of Educational Progress, operated by the US Department of Education, bills itself as The Nation's Report Card . While not explicitly tied to particular national or state standards, its reports provide a way of looking at student progress across the country in the eight subject areas the NAEP covers. These are the arts, civics, geography, math, reading, science, US history, and writing. He also invited the teen to visit if he was in the area, an offer Peng excitedly accepted. During his visit, Peng is scheduled to tour the department, the Map and Geographic Information Center located in Homer Babbidge Library and the Geographic Information Systems Lab. Hanink and others in the geography department are looking forward to Peng's upcoming visit. "We're happy as a community of geographers to have such a well-known geographer be part of UConn, even if only for a day," Hanink says. In order to win the bee, Peng had to beat out millions of competitors. The geography bee starts with about 5 million students nationwide who take written geography tests. The winners of the local championships go to state championships. Representatives from the 50 states and five territories go to the national bee. Those 55 competitors are reduced to 10 finalists. Ultimately, only two of those 10 make it to the championship round. Hanink applauds the bee for getting children interested in geography.

Extractions: 17. Refugee Tract Virginia Military District In 1770, Virginia had claimed part of the area that became Ohio. Virginia established the Military Reserve between the Scioto and Miami Rivers. These lands were available to veterans of the Virginia and Maryland Militias who had served during the American Revolution . These lands were passed out using the older survey procedures of Virginia, and they were not always fair to every veteran. Because of this, many new landowners learned that they were not the only ones who owned their land. Other veterans "owned" the same piece of land, and landowners were forced to go to court to have a judge decide who the true owner was. After Virginia gave out the land that its veterans wanted, it turned over the unclaimed lands to the United States government. In 1852 and 1871, these lands were turned over to the State of Ohio.

Extractions: The Newark Basin (in New Jersey and Pennsylvania) and the Connecticut River Basin are both "aborted rift" basins (rift basins that are no longer actively widening via rift-style tectonism - see map below). Both basins contain characteristic sedimentary sandstones and mudrocks that usually bear a red or brownish appearance from an abundance of iron oxide minerals (hematite and limonite). (Homes built of stone from the Newark Basin are called "brownstones.") Fossils are not abundant, but early Mesozoic dinosaur skeletons and trackways have been found. Freshwater shell material and poorly preserved fish and plant remains are also found in some areas. Formation of the Newark Basin and Early Atlantic Basin Both the Newark and Connecticut river basins contain "traprocks." Traprocks are mineral-rich mafic volcanic rocks. Their resistance to erosion (relative to the surrounding sandstone and shale produce elevated regions above the surrounding terrain. They form the core of gently dipping cuestas throughout the Mesozoic basins along the Atlantic Margin. The volcanic rocks formed in three ways: 1. The mafic igneous bodies intruded upward between sedimentary layers forming sills and stocks, cooling in the subsurface. The classic example of a volcanic sill is the Palisades along the western side of the Hudson River.

The state is divided into two roughly equal sections, usually called the eastern highland and the western highland, which are separated by the Connecticut Valley lowland.
