Extractions: About us Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News Member of Solomon Islands History It is thought that the first inhabitants of the Solomon Islands arrived from the north-west about 30,000 years ago, but the first organised agricultural people didn't settle until about 4000 BC, bringing with them knowledge of sailing, crops and animal breeding. Between that time and about 1600 AD, westward migration by Polynesians and the arrival of the Lapita people from the east created a heady mix of cultural practices in the region. Finding the main islands already occupied by Melanesians, the newcomers settled on the smaller, isolated islands, eliminating any small populations that happened to be in the way. For the next four hundred years, these outlying areas became the focus of Tongan and Tokelauan aggression, resulting in a natural fear of strangers. By the 19th century, this fear produced the widespread habit (rarely practiced today) of attacking strangers on sight. Due largely to bad mapping, Europeans stayed away from (that is, couldn't find) the Solomons for the next century and a half. In 1767, British captain Philip Cartaret stumbled through the island group. He couldn't believe that he'd rediscovered the Solomons, but the people who followed - an assortment of British, French and American explorers, whalers and traders - certainly left their mark in the area. Large-scale traders cut short the Islands' 'Great Peace' with their shonky business practices (robbery, murder) and diseased bodies. The islanders quickly grew to hate the traders, and would often kill any white person they saw. Add firearms into this mix of headhunting, 'labour recruitment' (blackbirding) and distrust, and the Solomon Islands quickly gained the reputation for being the most inhospitable place in the Pacific. Even the unstoppable missionaries watched their step.

Extractions: Countless travellers' tales, books, plays and films have created a vision of an archetype of heaven in the South Seas massed coconut palms, jungle-clad peaks, the boom of combers smashing on the reef, the crimson flamboyant trees and the beat of the drum dance. Amazingly enough it is all true. Casual chats with overseas visitors will often confirm their surprise that such a place exists. Voyagers from Switzerland, England Germany, Italy and Canada will admit they never expected to find Rarotonga such a beautiful island. Many who have been to Hawaii, Fiji or Tahiti often complain about the prices or the commercialisation of those places but their attitude to Rarotonga is nearly always favorable. They like the relaxed atmosphere and the sense that the life of the island continues in its normal way without a 'tourist' focus. One feature remarked on by most visitors but almost unnoticed by Rarotongans is the number of tiny wild chickens which wander without hindrance wherever they choose. These fowl are too scrawny or quick to make serious contributions to cooking pots. Every morning before dawn and often in the middle of the night a chorus of cockerels starts up, with each rooster trying to outdo the other in staking their claims to territory and harems.
Extractions: Hawaii Islands have witnessed a lot of cultural changes. Ranging right from Early settlers to Colonial times. Lets take a look at some of the remarkable periods in history which left an impact on the Hawaii Islands The first Polynesians, believed to be from the Marquesas, settled on this island chain some time between 500 and 600 AD. They lived a rather peaceful life until, in 1000 AD, the Tahitians arrived and introduced their customs, religion and a strict social order.

Partners in Care Western Memorial Regional Hospital History The first settlers of the Bay of Islands took up residence in 1779. For nearly one hundred years medical services, which were non-existent locally, were provided by the naval surgeons aboard patrolling and visiting warships (both English and French), missionaries, and occasional self-trained doctors. An entry in the log of H.M.S. Bullfinch dated 19 September 1876 noted that there is a medical man here. This was in reference to Dr. Miller, the first qualified practitioner who set up practice at Birchy Cove (now Curling) in the Bay of Islands. Dr. Frank Fisher, the son of Christopher Fisher, owner and operator of the sawmill in Corner Brook, was the first local man to attend medical school and graduate. He set up practice in Corner Brook in 1904, after spending a year in Bonne Bay. A small hospital was built in Deer Lake with 12 beds, with Dr. W.E. Weeks in charge. A small First Aid Unit was established near the entrance to the Mill in Corner Brook under Dr. Frank Fisher. It had six beds, a dispensary and living quarters, but patients who required more that 24 hours hospitalization were transferred to the Deer Lake Hospital by railway ambulance car, number 1590, which was white with a red cross on the side.
