I became acquainted with production schedules and marketing plans, cover design, acquisitions, and contracts, as well as all stages of editing. Dell had a copy chief, a deputy copy chief, and five full-time, in-house copy editors, of whom I was one. The production editors were in a separate department that reported to the managing editor, as did our department. Many publishing houses had already jettisoned their in-house copy editors and proofreaders in favor of using freelancers for everything. Dell used freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers for most full-length books. Trafficking was handled by the production department. Editors handled acquisitions and line-editing, after which mss. came to copy editing and in most cases were sent out to freelancers by the copy chief. The chief or her deputy spot-checked most copy edited mss., which then were usually set directly into page proofs. Some heavily illustrated books were set in galleys. After page proofs and galleys came back from freelancers, the staff copy editors checked them and transferred author's alterations. All corrected proofs were checked in-house.

I was expected to use my critical judgment as well as my copy editing skills to spot possible libel, gaps in information, factual errors, inconsistencies, and unnecessary redundancy not only inside the Metro section but above the fold on Page One in the center of a big-city newsroom, with all the clamor and excitement that entails. The Post did not have a universal copy desk. The National, Foreign, Metro, Business, and Style section each had their own copy desk. Copy editing for other sections, such as Health and Travel, was done by one of the major desks or by a dedicated copy editor, depending on the section. Metro had 10 or 12 full-time copy editors of its own (of whom I was one), plus a number of part-time freelancers who filled in as necessary. The Metro desk was responsible for copy editing all stories in the Metro section, all those that ran on Page One and that were written by the Metro staff, and all copy for the zoned weekly sections (about 10 sections). Page design and dummying for Metro and Page One were done by the news desk. Copy editors coded all stories for typesetting according to dummies and wrote all headlines and cutlines, and pull-out quotes as needed. For special layouts, copy editors also wrote subheads and longer, descriptive captions.

The report will be discussed at the opening general membership meeting at the APSE convention in Baltimore on June 28, and at a workshop immediately following that session. Here is the report: One year ago at the APSE convention in Chicago, University of Texas professor Griff Singer criticized sports editors for their approach to recruiting copy editors. "You need to do it year-round," he said. "Don't wait until you have an opening and then take the first warm body." Not much has changed in the past year. Despite the demise of several of the dot-coms that siphoned many young editors from newspapers, sports editors find themselves conducting long searches to fill copy desk openings.

Michael Roberts, training editor, The Cincinnati Enquirer, and Ted Power, managing editor/Nights at The Tennessean in Nashville, led the training session. It was attended by staffers from Wilmington, Cherry Hill, Bridgewater, Lansdale and Poughkeepsie. Seminar participants shared many tips that staffers at other newspapers should find useful. Here are reports on the seminar from Power and Poughkeepsie Copy Editor Bonnie Smolen: By Ted Power, Managing Editor/Nights, The Tennessean, Nashville Copy editors never escape the changing nature of news presentation. The technology of pagination, the evolution of planning desks, reporting teams and presentation hubs and the personal pressures of night and weekend hours keep many copy editors awake long after the newspaper goes to press. How refreshing it was, then, to hear copy editors at recent Gannett seminars ask for help in reaffirming the traditional standards of copy desks.

Extractions: Readers' Representative G regory Borchard wrote a column for the Daily about India's nuclear testing. A reader called to say he disagreed with the column, but complimented Borchard on the headline, "U.S. hypocrisy explosive for all sides." Borchard is responsible for the content of his column, but the reader praised the wrong person for the headline. The kudos for good headlines go to the copy editors, who write all the headlines for the Daily but whose names you never see. After reporters finish articles, they are sent to copy editors, whose job it is to check spelling, grammar and style, and eliminate jargon and needless words. They also write the headlines that often determine whether or not a story will be read. Daily copy editors call headline writing the most challenging part of their job. News editor Sarah Hallonquist, who writes most of the front-page headlines, said space is usually the determining factor in headlines, followed by the copy editor's vocabulary and time. "If time allows, I usually get out the thesaurus for a lengthy study of synonyms that fit my space," Hallonquist said.
