See a map here Visionary Leadership Advances Conservation After abolishing its army in 1949, Costa Rica's visionary leaders diverted military funds into a leading-edge conservation strategy: Constitutional guarantees to a healthy and ecologically balanced environment. Private and public agencies were solicited to invest in the large-scale protection of the country's natural resources. The result is that some 12 percent of the land is now secured in national parks, and another 16 percent is protected in private nature and forests. The Ministry of Natural Resources guarantees as much as 90 percent of the country's biological diversity will be protected. Location Costa Rica, the southernmost of the five republics that comprise Central America extends approximately from eight to eleven degrees north latitude and between eighty-three and eighty-six degrees west longitude. According to the latitudes mentioned, Costa Rica is located practically in the center of the inter-tropical zone 10° north of the equator. This zone is also referred to as the "Hot Zone", due to its prevailing warm temperatures throughout. It is also located on the North American Continent, on the Central American Isthmus. It is six hours west of Greenwich, Costa Rica borders with present-day Panama (which was a province of Colombia until 1903). This border issue went unresolved for many years, with Costa Rica claiming as part of its territory the littoral of Chiriqui Lagoon. Later, however, to end the dispute, Costa Rica and Colombia submitted the matter for French President Loubet to decide, but he suggested an equivocal border that failed to resolve the issue. Once Panama was established as a republic, the matter was submitted to the Chief Justice of the United States, Edward Douglas White, who presented his verdict on September 12, 1914. Costa Rica has four distinct cordilleras or mountain ranges Guanacaste and Tilar n in the north, Central and Talamanca in the south. Costa Rica is part of the Pacific "Rim of Fire" and has seven of the isthmus's 42 active volcanoes plus dozens of dormant or extinct cones. Earth tremors and small quakes shake the country from time to time. The last major quake hit on April 22, 1991. Centered on the Caribbean side southeast of San Jose, it measured 7.4 on the Richter scale. The country's highest point is Mt. Chirripo (3,797 meters). The capital, San Jose, and the neighboring major cities of Alajuela and Heredie lies in the middle of the Meseta Central (Central Valley). Almost two-thirds of the nation's population live in this small, fertile valley. The Pacific coastal plain is much narrower than its Caribbean counterpart. Extractions: Two mountain chains together run almost the entire length of Costa Rica. These are, in the north, the Cordillera Volcánica, noted, as the name implies, for its volcanic activity, and, in the south, the Cordillera de Talamanca. The Cordillera Volcánica may be divided into three ranges: from northwest to southeast, the Cordillera de Guanacaste, the Cordillera de Tilarán, and the Cordillera Central. The Cordillera de Talamanca is a massive granite batholith, quite different geologically from the volcanically active northern ranges. Costa Rica's highest point is Mount Chirripó, in the Talamanca system, at 12,533 feet (3,820 metres). Two of the highest peaks in the Cordillera Volcánica, Irazú (11,260 feet) and Poás (8,871 feet), have paved roads reaching to the rims of their active craters. These volcanoes overlook the densely populated upland basin called the Meseta Central (Valle Central), and they pose a serious natural hazard, as do earthquakes for most parts of the country. The Meseta Central is separated into two parts by the continental divide. The eastern part is drained by the Reventazón River to the Caribbean, and the western sector forms part of the basin of the Río Grande de Tárcoles, which flows into the Pacific. Another large structural valley, the Valle del General, lies at the base of the Cordillera de Talamanca in the southern part of the country. To the north and east of the mountainous central spine lie the Caribbean lowlands, about one-fifth of the country and less than 400 feet in altitude. The Pacific lowlands, which contain several small valleys and plains, include only about one-tenth of Costa Rica's territory.

Changing altitudes plays an important part in determining geographical, climatic and ecological variation. The Central Valley In the center of the highlands lies the meseta central (the Central Valley), which is surrounded by mountains (the Cordillera Central to the north and east, the Cordillera de Talamanca to the south). It is this central plain, between 1000 and 1500 meters above sea level, which contains four of Costa Rica's five largest cities, including San José, the capital. The Caribbean and Pacific Coasts On either side of the volcanic central highlands lie coastal lowlands which differ greatly in character. The smooth Caribbean coastline is 212 kms long and is characterized by year-round rain, mangroves, swamps, an intercoastal waterway, sandy beaches and small tides.
