The presence of the rugged mountainous relief, and the fact that it is a relatively young land with visible seismic and volcanic activity, are essential factors in understanding the great diversity in the landscape and the richness of the country's volcanic soils. This has contributed to the formation, by means of lava and ashes, of very fertile soils that have contributed to the country's wealth and prosperity by permitting the cultivation of coffee, cocoa, and sugar cane banana. Likewise, these conditions helped in the development of a very successful dairy industry concentrating in the production of milk.
