See the flyer I began belly dance lessons in 1995 with Saiqa who continues to teach the ethnic or folkloric style of belly dance which I favor. Since then and to name a few, I have studied with Jewel, Dunia Ghanima Celena Fat Chance Belly Dance and Ultra Gypsy . My continual study of the dance includes: regular class drop-ins with several teachers throughout the Bay Area, workshops offered by visiting teachers, instructional videos and on occasion, private lessons from a few teachers. I attend as many performances as possible, I find that the best teachers are my peers and mentors. On my occasional travels, I often look up classes by local teachers and take home what I learn as souvenirs. Learning as much as possible from different teachers and dancers is high on my list. I have studied finger cymbals and percussion from Mary Ellen Donald based in San Francisco. Currently, I take private lessons from Celena "the Killer Ziller" in order to enhance my overall performance and music interpretation skills. In addition to

Another way national leaders and cultural policy makers pursue this desired goal is to encourage innovation and creativity in specific domains of arts and culture.10 This factor of innovation is important because its potential for constructing new relationships and realizing new expectations, especially when it draws on elements deriving from multiple ethnic sources. The examples of national dance troupes, choirs, and drama groups touring intensively (both internally and internationally) provide an essential influence that informs the resources, genres, and modes of organization in ARS, as will be discussed later. The example of ARS must, therefore, be seen against this background of national politics and patterns of society and culture in order to appreciate the interplay of factors influencing cultural display and ethnic identities in the church.

Fashion From Rustic To Vogue Wei Ronghui's Development of Chinese National Costume All cultures possess things which identify them as special, speak of their history and their historical way of life. Wei Ronghui is Huia Chinese minority. She is director of the China Museum of Ethnicities and the Center of National Costume Design. Perhaps most importantly, she herself is also a famous designer of national dress. G rowing up among the mountains and clear waters of Guizhou, Wei Ronghui knows the influence that lifestyle has on national dress. Before beginning a new costume, she always goes to the place where the minority in question resides, in order to research their lifestyle and habits. There are 56 different nationalities in China and Wei's footprints can be found in the mountains and villages where many of the minorities reside. She has worked in the fields with local women and sewed with them, absorbing their traditional culture, before communicating that culture through her designs. Her designs include a wonderful assortment of colors, patterns and fabric; they build on the traditional, while being inspired and creative. Using fabrics of the Buyi, she designed suits for students. She took the pattern used on the straps for carrying babies in the south and used it on the qipao worn in the north. She used long gowns to express the secret beauty of Tibetan women and casual, white cow-herding clothes to convey the energy of young Tibetan men. Her large use of the color white was in keeping with Tibetan's large use of this color.

Wonderful photos of the people of Africa." Art of Arabian Costume: A Saudi Arabian Profile by Heather Colyer Ross. "This book would be a useful resource for middle eastern dancers looking for costume ideas, but is not as helpful for those looking for exact information about how the garments are made. Many of the poses used by the models are very dramatic (or even high fashion) and attractive, but make it difficult to make out the details of the garments. Historical information is sketchy. However, the wide variety of garments shown and the fact that they are shown in color, together with the extensive commentary in the text, makes this a useful book. There are few books covering Bedouin dress this extensively."

UREP: Textiles And Costume Of Northern Laos of NE Thailand in the Walker Hall design Museum at where her collections of BolivianCarnival costume were featured has a wide variety of ethnic tribal people http://urep.ucdavis.edu/LecountL.html
Extractions: PROJECT DESCRIPTION Artists combine color and form, shape and texture, but some artisans in northern Laos do not work with clay or paint as their materials - they use a loom and thread. The resulting cloth woven in remote villages of northern Laos glows with brilliant color and intricate patterns. During this project, under the leadership of Cynthia LeCount-Samake, UREP participants will document the contemporary weaving processes and the traditional indigenous clothing made from the woven textiles. In this preliminary study, participants will seek out village markets and celebrations where the people wear traditional clothing. Using field methods of observation and video and still photography, the team will document the weaving, the clothing and the village environment. Through local student translators, UREP participants will also interview the textile artists and photograph the weaving techniques and apparatus, cloth patterning methods and the finished cloth. Participants will meet in Vientiane, Laos, then proceed by plane to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang. After an introduction into Lao life in beautiful Luang Prabang, the team will take local buses to villages further north. Research Objectives: Superb and unusual textiles are woven in norhtern Laos by the rare and unique technique of juxtaposing three time-consuming techniques - ikat, supplementary warp and supplementary weft - in one textile. I do not know of any other area in the world where this is done. Thoroughly document the intricate and complex weaving techniques.
