Extractions: Main Idea: Violence has intensified between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers since the Intifada resumed some three months ago. Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestinians, is reluctant to make concessions at the peace table when militant factions of his group support increased violence in order to pressure Israel into granting Palestinian demands. The Palestinians in particular want control of the Temple Mount, considered a most holy place to Muslims, a place where they say Mohammed ascended into heaven. Israelis are equally reluctant to yield control of this raised block of land in the old city of Jerusalem, because it is the location of the Wailing Wall, all that remains of the second Jewish Temple. Other Arab countries, notably Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon seem to be joining forces politically behind the Palestinians, giving them a feeling of greater support in the Arab world. Article #2
