Following the incident, Toogood turned herself in to police and was promptly charged with battery to a child, a felony that could put the mother behind bars for up to three years. Toogood, also a mother of two boys, pleaded not guilty, claiming the taped incident was isolated. Martha didnt deserve what she got. I just lost my temper, she said. If convicted, should Toogood receive a lighter sentence if this is found to be her first incident of abuse? And does this strengthen the argument for more cameras and less privacy in public areas? Shocking defibrillator skills Doctors are putting lives at risk because they are misusing emergency resuscitation equipment. Charles Deakin, a consultant anaesthetist at Southampton General Hospital, and colleagues found that less than one quarter of a group of doctors knew how to position defibrillation paddles correctly. They recruited 101 doctors of all grades and specialties at the hospital to take part in the study, and were asked to perform defibrillation on a male resuscitation manikin. The position of the centre of the pads was recorded using a grid placed over the chest wall. The results are published in the British Medical Journal. The researchers found that 65 per cent of the paddles were placed within 5cm of the recommended position under European Resuscitation Council guidelines - but only 22 per cent were placed correctly. They found no difference in the results according to doctors grades or specialties, or between those who had or had not received training in the last three months. Given that each minute of delay in restoring normal heart rhythm increases mortality by 7-10 per cent, teaching of advanced life support must place greater emphasis on paddle position if successful defibrillation is to be optimised, they said.

Never before had so many people watched so much news. The nation had rarely, if ever, been so involved in a single story. There was discussion of the vicissitudes of the war throughout the TV day and there had probably never been so much concentrated TV coverage of a specific event week after week for the duration of the war. And never had the nation been exposed to and fallen prey to so much disinformation and propaganda. For the rest of the Gulf war, both the Bush Administration and the military vilified Saddam Hussein and the Iraqis whenever possible while presenting their own actions, however brutal, in a positive light so that few negative images appeared of U.S. military actions. The Big Lie that was repeated daily throughout the war maintained that the U.S-led multinational coalition bombing campaign was precise and was avoiding civilian casualties. This lie was promoted by both the Bush administration and the U.S. military. General Schwarzkopf, in a January 27 briefing, insisted that the coalition forces "are absolutely doing more than we ever have" to avoid casualties. He claimed that "I think no nation in the history of warfare" has done more to use their technology to minimize civilian casualties and to avoid hitting cultural or religious targets. George Bush echoed this in a February 5 press conference, claiming: "We are doing everything possible and with great success to minimize collateral damage.... I'd like to say that we are going to extraordinary, and I would venture to say, unprecedented length, to avoid damage to civilians and holy places."
