This also marks the beginning of a long journey for Cretan Archaeology The Linear A script instigated new research around the town of Gortyn and attracted the attention of Italian researchers, among them Federico Albert. In addition, it fired the imagination of other researchers from around the world who came to Crete to search for more ancient texts and tablets. This resulted in numerous excavations and a wealth of findings. Since the Renaissance and up to the 19th century, expert travelers on Crete were very interested in examining the rare documents kept in the monasteries of the island.

Renowned historical figures from Crete left their indelible marks in numerous ancient Olympic Games either as organizers or as athletes. Historical records provide incontestable proof that many ancient athletes from Crete returned to the island crowned with the "Kotinos", the olive branch wreath awarded to Olympic winners. Cretans have a tradition in taking the winners' stand during Olympic Games, particularly in track events, a fact which is associated with the particular geomorphology of the Cretan terrain imposing "survival of the fittest" conditions. It is no accident that track competitors were pooled from the young and robust members of the Cretan populace. Cretan runners were distinguished for their speed and entitled to carry arms. This qualified them as military couriers who covered fast long distances on foot that were also combat ready.

Extractions: FOCUS ON: THE GREEK ISLAND OF CRETE Minoan Crete maintained an extensive network of trading links that brought influences drawn from Egypt and Mesopotamia to Crete. The Minoans exported pottery, grains, wines, and oils, and tended to import luxury materials such as precious metals, jewels, and ivory. Minoan culture gave rise to several great cities that featured stone buildings and provision for a water supply and drainage. The city adjacent to the great Palace of Knossos was home, at it's peak, to almost one hundred thousand people. Knossos was thus one of the first major cities in human history! In the New Palace Period the trade routes between other places and Crete increased. Minoan trading stations existed in various Aegean Islands such as Kythera, Milos, Kea, Thira, Karpathos, Rhodes as well as in Asia Minor (Miletos), in Syria, and in Egypt (Faros). As the "crossroads" for several trading routes, culture of Crete became blended with those from empires of all directions. Extractions: The red porgy, Pagrus pagrus, is a protogynous hermaphrodite sparid of increasing interest to the aquaculture industry. The first efforts for the intensive culture of the red porgy started at the IMBC in 1989, when broodstock and fry were caught from the wild and acclimated at on-land installations. The present work describes data on i) reproduction (study of gametogenesis, age of sex reversal and sexual maturity, spawning strategy), ii) larval rearing (stocking density, feeding regime, water quality, timing of the developmental stages), iii) grow-out (growth rate, conversion index, mortality, water requirements), and iv) disease problems related to the intensive farming at all stages of production. Extractions: The foundation of the first museum (1904-1912) is owed to the efforts of two Cretan archaeologists, Joseph Chatzidakis and Stephanos Xanthoudides, Ephors of the Archaeological Service. It housed the valuable finds from Crete until 1937, when the construction of the modern, antiseismic building was begun. Thanks to the efforts of Prof. Nicolaos Platon, the treasures of the museum survived during World War II, although the building was seriously damaged. T he task of rearranging the exhibition was undertaken by Prof. N. Platon in 1951, and in 1952 the finds were again on display. In 1964 a new wing was added and the arrangement of the exhibits was completed by the Director, St. Alexiou. Thus the museum today has twenty rooms in all, containing artefacts from the palaces, houses, tombs and caves in Crete. T he exhibiton of the museum is organized in chronological order, ranging from the Neolithic period to the Roman era (4th century A.D.) and geographically, according to the provenance of the finds.

Extractions: T he Museum was created by the Municipality of Herakleion, following the organization of an exhibition of documents of the period 1941-1945, on the occasion of the celebration on the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Crete(1941). I t is housed in a large room in a building in the centre of the town. Among the Museum's exhibits are thousands of authentic photographs, paintings and drawings of the Battle of Crete and the national resistance, about two hundred books, monographs, essays on the historic events from 1941 to 1945, hundreds of documents and a great many newspaper cuttings. The Museum also includes a variety of objects related to the war (arms, accessories, uniforms, items of everyday use etc.). I n addition, the museum also operates as a research centre thanks to a team of researchers and scientists who have undertaken to collect archival material from ten countries, to translate war documents of the 1940-1945 period, as well as to write about the Battle of Crete.

Today, Greek constitutes a large part of the vocabulary of any Indo-European language, and much of the lexicon of any scientific repertoire. Modern Greek is a southern dialect adopted as a standardised version of the language and differs substantially from Katharevousa, the artificial language loosely based on Ancient Greek that was instated by various right-wing puritanical regimes this century. Extractions: Plato gave the world the oldest remaining written account of Atlantis, in Critias, recorded circa 370 BC. By his account, Poseidon, god of the sea, sired five pairs of male twins with mortal women. Poseidon appointed the eldest of these sons, Atlas the Titan, ruler of his beautiful island domain. Atlas became the personification of the mountains or pillars that held up the sky. Plato described Atlantis as a vast island-continent west of the mediterranean, surrounded by the Atlantic ocean. The Greek word Atlantis means the island of Atlas, just as the word Atlantic means the ocean of Atlas. Atlantis was governed in peace, was rich in commerce, was advanced in knowledge, and held dominion over the surrounding islands and continents. By Plato's legend, the people of Atlantis became complacent and their leaders arrogant; in punishment the Gods destroyed Atlantis, flooding it and submerging the island in one day and night. In a sense, Atlantis actually existed, and was indeed destroyed by the sea in a cataclysmic event, very plausibly lasting a day and a night. Plato's account was wrong in several essential ways, but was derived from correct, if garbled, historical accounts. Plato's writings embodied the now lost words of Solon, a Greek ruler who visited Egypt circa 590 BC. Plato's account of Atlantis was thus a retelling of the story of Solon, who in turn told the stories that he had heard during his trip to Egypt. In Egypt, Solon heard of the ancient land of Keftiu, a island-nation named for holding one of the four pillars that supported the Egyptian sky. Keftiu was, according to the Egyptians, an advanced civilization that was the gateway to and ruler of all of the lands to the far west of Egypt. Keftiu traded in ivory, copper, and cloth. Keftiu supported hosts of ships and controlled commerce far beyond the Egyptians domain. By Egyptian record, Keftiu was destroyed by the seas in an apocalypse. Solon carried this story to Greece, and passed it to his son and grandson.
