In 1854 Franz Joseph and the sultan forced Tsar Nicholas I to withdraw his troops from the principalities, and imperial and Ottoman soldiers soon occupied them. Russia's defeat in the Crimea forced the tsar to seek peace, affirmed in 1856 by the Treaty of Paris. De jure Ottoman suzerainty over the principalities continued after the treaty, which abolished the Russian protectorate and replaced it with a joint European guarantee. The treaty also freed navigation on the Danube and forced Russia to cede part of southern Bessarabia, which included control of the river's mouth, to Moldavia.     Extractions: Source: The Library of Congress Country Studies Russia followed the United States, Britain, and France in establishing relations with Japan, and, together with Britain and France, Russia obtained concessions from China consequent to the Second Opium War (1856-60). Under the Treaty of Aigun in 1858 and the Treaty of Beijing in 1860, China ceded to Russia extensive trading rights and regions adjacent to the Amur and Ussuri rivers and allowed Russia to begin building a port and naval base at Vladivostok. Meanwhile, in 1867 the logic of the balance of power and the cost of developing and defending the Amur-Ussuri region dictated that Russia sell Alaska to the United States in order to acquire much-needed funds. In early 1877, Russia came to the rescue of beleaguered Serbian and Russian volunteer forces when it went to war with the Ottoman Empire. Within one year, Russian troops were nearing Constantinople, and the Ottomans surrendered. Russia's nationalist diplomats and generals persuaded Alexander II to force the Ottomans to sign the Treaty of San Stefano in March 1878, creating an enlarged, independent Bulgaria that stretched into the southwestern Balkans. When Britain threatened to declare war over the terms of the Treaty of San Stefano, an exhausted Russia backed down. At the Congress of Berlin in July 1878, Russia agreed to the creation of a smaller Bulgaria. Russian nationalists were furious with Austria-Hungary and Germany for failing to back Russia, but the tsar accepted a revived and strengthened League of the Three Emperors as well as Austro-Hungarian hegemony in the western Balkans.

    Extractions: In the first half of the 19th century, the Czar was the leading proponent of the HOLY ALLIANCE, intent to guarantee the inviolability of the political order of Europe. In Asia, however, Russia pursued a policy of expansion, which was successful especially in the Caucasus region, but also in Central Asia, where the ELDER HORDE of the Kazakhs was subjugated in 1847. In December 1852 the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, giving in on French pressure, transferred the key to (and control over) the CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE (hitherto Orthodox) to the Catholic Church. Russia, claiming to be the protector of the Orthodox christians living in the Ottoman Empire, demanded it to be restored to the Greek Orthodox Church. Britain and France were opposed to an expansion of Russian influence in the region and dispatched a fleet to the Dardanelles (June 1853); in August, the Russians occupied the Duchies of MOLDAVIA and VLACHIA.

The Western powers established commercial bases there (by agreement with the Ottoman Empire) as early as the 16th century (e.g. the English government-backed Levant Company estab 1581), and many western merchants lived there with their families. For centuries Smyrna was a cosmopolitan place with a large permanent European population. The westerners, from many different countries in W Europe, tended to marry among themselves, and all the families ended up related.     Extractions: Europe After In contrast to the period before 1848, which was a period of revolutions but of international peace, the period 1848 to 1914 was one of internal calm within the nations of Europe but of increasing international tension and war. The international peace which had been established by the Congress of Vienna in 1815, was seriously threatened by the emergence of two new united states in Europe - Italy and Germany. However, even before these two new states were created a war broke out which involved Ottoman Turkey, Russia, France and Britain. This was the Crimean War (1854-1856). The Crimean War Ever since the defeat of Napoleonic France in 1815, it was Russia which was seen to be the greatest threat to peace in Europe, especially by Britain and France. They both knew full well that, since the days of Peter the Great, Russia had ambitions of expanding its influence southwards from the Black Sea into the Mediterranean region. The block to this ambition was Ottoman Turkey which controlled the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles. As has previously been mentioned, the Ottoman Empire was weak and the so-called "Eastern Question" was basically what would happen when it collapsed.

    Extractions: S uomenlinna is known as an avant-garde of culture, the influence of which has affected the cultural life throughout Finland. The arts, music and theater have especially flourished. The first artist was the planner of the fortress himself, Augustin Ehrensvärd. More renowned artists are Elias Martin and A. E. Gete, who worked on Viapori in the 1760s. Their engravings, drawings, and oil paintings give a vivid picture of the building work on the islands. A mong the most famous musicians of Suomenlinna is Bernhard Henrik Crusell, the composer and clarinetist. He started his career as a student in the military band of Viapori in 1787 and later moved to Stockholm. Military music has, of course, always been played on the islands. N owadays there are many artists living permanently on Suomenlinna. Different kinds of artisans have their studios on the islands. The galleries Rantakasarmi and Augusta and the gallery for exhibitions of various themes in the Visitor Centre Inventory Chambers give the possibilities for artists to exhibit their works. The Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art manages five guest-studios, mainly for Nordic artists in the bastion Palmstierna. The Institute also provides grants for these artists, so they can live and work for some months in Suomenlinna
