Balk (1983) further identified acute emotional responses of students after the death of a peer. He revealed that while peer support and chances to talk with friends about the death at such a time of loss were important aids in coping with death, many peers feel uncomfortable talking about death. They frequently avoid the survivors to decrease their discomfort of not knowing what to say or how to say it. Balk maintained that young people sometimes hide their feelings of grief because such feelings often are not considered acceptable in public, and as a result, adolescents are often confused about the source of their recurring grief reactions.

Between 1957 and 1975, the rate of suicide among 15 to 24 year olds tripled; among Native American adolescents, the suicide rate increased 1000% (TEENAGERS IN CRISIS, l983). It is estimated that 5,000 to 6,000 teenagers kill themselves each year, and at least ten times that many attempt to do so. Because many suicide attempts go unreported or are reported as accidents, the estimated number may be as high as 500,000 per year. While females attempt suicide more often than males, at a rate of 4:1, males "succeed" more often, at the same rate (SUICIDE AMONG SCHOOL AGE YOUTH, l984). Our achievement-oriented, highly competitive society puts pressure on teens to succeed, often forcing them to set unrealistically high personal expectations. There is increased pressure to stay in school, where success is narrowly defined and difficult to achieve. In an affluent society which emphasizes immediate rewards, adolescents are not taught to be tolerant of frustration. Blurred gender roles can also be confusing and frustrating for teens (Rosenkrantz, 1978).

This program serves youth living in Chilliwack, British Columbia (Canada) and the surrounding areas. Crisis Intervention and/or supportive counselling will be provided for the suicidal youth, their family, and/or their friends. In the case of a completed suicide, Crisis Intervention and support will be offered to friends and family. This Youth Suicide Prevention Counsellor is available to see youth who come to the hospital. If the youth is hospitalized, the Counsellor can meet with him or her in the hospital and offer counselling once the youth is discharged. Similarly, the Counsellor can meet with family and/or friends of the youth at the hospital, making further contact easier for all involved. If the youth is not admitted to the hospital, the Youth Suicide Prevention Counsellor can be accessed for follow-up the next working day, as deemed necessary by the attending physician.

Specially trained counselors assist young callers to deal effectively with the many changes, frustrations, pressures, and decisions of the day to day experiences that are part of growing up. The service also assists parents in dealing more effectively with the increasing stresses and demands of raising children. Phone Counselor Training Program The Crisis Phone Counselor Training Program consists of seven four-hour sessions taught by professional crisis intervention staff to prepare each trainee with the knowledge and skills necessary to become an effective Crisis Phone Counselor. During the program, trainees receive instruction through verbal and video taped presentations, and participate in simulated crisis response situations designed to teach individuals suicide lethality assessment, crisis intervention, and the ability to make referrals to multiple resources. Upon satisfactory completion of the seven sessions, trainees are afforded the opportunity to work two training shifts in the phone room under the direct supervision and guidance of experienced staff and volunteers. After a final reconvening session of trainees, work begins as a Crisis Phone Counselor with the expectation of a six month commitment. Ongoing supervision supports the volunteers' continued development and progress.
