The growth of crops continues to be an important focus of scientific investigation and new developments in other areas of science are increasingly being applied in crops (e.g. genetic engineering of crop plants, biocontrol of plant disease, production of bioactive molecules). The BSc in Crop Science is designed for those students who wish to study the utilisation of plants and their products. The degree programme exploits the considerable experience in crop and related sciences at Aberdeen; it consists of a core set of courses plus elective courses in all years of study. This degree is different from the Crop Science option of the BSc (Agr) degree in that students are not required to study all the topics which are included in the BSc (Agr) degree. Members of the Soils and Land Resources Faculty teach the Soils courses within the Agronomy rubric and serve as advisors to students who select this option. This study area gives students an understanding of soil as a natural resource and as a component of all terrestrial ecosystems. The student will learn how soils influence ecological processes which take place above and below ground. An understanding of these processes will enable the student to deal with traditional agricultural production issues as well as environmental management problems such as groundwater protection, and the most appropriate use for a particular landscape. Students interested in preparing for graduate work in soils can aim toward a variety of special areas including soil biology, fertility, chemistry, physics, mineralogy, and morphology.
