General production operations at CARC, weather events, progressive producers or emerging markets provide for non-traditional opportunities to learn about production aspects of various seed and forage crops. Summary Demonstration plots of corn and millet were established for show at Fields of Tomorrow. Early season moisture stress inhibited the good germination and growth. The long warm growing season with good moisture in late June helped the performance of the warm season millet and corn. Some corn hybrids had good seed set with yields above 35 bushels per acre. Some millet yields were around a 1000 pounds per acre and others did not set much seed. Judgements can not be made for varieties or hybrids based on this information, since it is a single nursery and is not an established Randomized Complete Block (RCB) plot configuration. Flor flax was seeded on seven acres (one of four fields involved in the intrastate cereal trials field rotation). The flax yielded a little over 700 pounds per acre. Flor seems to be later maturing and the stems are slow to dry down. Therefore, a different variety will be seeded in 1999. Yellow mustard was seeded no-till re-crop on 20 acres in mid-May. An excellent stand was attained and in fact a little too thick. The mustard exhibited excellent growth throughout the season, but experienced heat stress at a critical time and only produce about 30 pounds per acre.

Thorough cleaning removes weed seeds, smut "balls" and particles, bits of chaff and straw, and lightweight kernels or seeds that may be infected, as well as other undesirable impurities. Although seed can be treated on the farm at the time of planting, it is best to have treatments applied by elevators, seed and feed houses, or processing plants to insure thorough coverage. Seeds are treated by fungicides formulated as dusts, wettable powders, dry or liquid flowables, or liquids. The fungicide may be applied to seed on the farm as dusts or liquids (slurries) by using a revolving barrel or oil-drum treater or by adding it to the drill or planter box. Manual mixing with the seed in the drill box immediately before sowing reduces the possibility of treated grain being used for animal feed or human consumption. To ensure thorough mixing, apply half the required amount of fungicide to the half-filled drill box, stir the grain well with a paddle, (do not use your hands!), then add the remaining seed and fungicide and stir again. Wettable powders and dry flowables are usually applied to seed in a commercial slurry machine. Liquids and liquid flowables are commonly applied in various commercial, ready-mix, mist-type, or slurry-type treaters. Fungicides should be applied to seed as close to the time of planting as possible.

Extractions: This set of images was done from scratch in Visual Nature Studio v1, for a colleague (Trudie Dockerty) investigating the possible impacts of climate change on agricultural landscapes. I used some components from the Oxfordshire work (woodland and villages), and created others from scratch. All the polygons were assigned ecosystems via search queries; this dynamic linking made switching from one scenario to the other extremely easy. VNS also regridded the Ordnance Survey 50m DEM to a much smoother 35m grid in just a few seconds. Total time from blank screen to finished renders: 2 working days, including much tweaking of textures!
