"I don't get the sense that alternative currencies on the Internet have gained any traction, and credit cards will continue to dominate e-commerce," said Paul Jamieson, a senior analyst at Internet research company Gomez. Credit cards "are something that consumers are used to; they are accepted nearly everywhere online and offline," Jamieson said. "Flooz and Beenz just can't offer the same versatility now or over the next few years." Robert Levitan, chief executive of New York-based Flooz.com, said his company saw the changes and has shifted away from e-commerce to a business-to-business model. Flooz's strategy is to focus on the corporate gift market, for companies to reward their employees by using Flooz. "We always thought [the shift] would happen but didn't know it would be such a large part of our business so soon. Our investors are happy with the change and want us to focus more on this," Levitan said.

Opportunities abound for insurers and lenders with the moxie to underwrite and finance these trade flows, writes Gary Mendell. Cash in advance and letters of credit are no longer competitive terms in the international marketplace. Creditworthy importers expect equipment suppliers in developed countries to offer financing options, especially when the buyers are located in emerging markets where economic growth is constrained by scarce capital, limited hard currency and high interest rates. Equipment exporters from the United States, Europe and other developed markets want to be paid in hard currency, without recourse, upon shipment and presentation of documents. Their customers in Latin America, Asia, Africa and other emerging markets seek loans or leasing, with repayment periods from one to five years, at competitive interest rates. Export-finance transactions like these need to be funded by third-party lenders, i.e. commercial banks, equipment-leasing companies and other kinds of financial institutions, often with additional support from export-credit agencies (ECAs) or insurance underwriters. Once the sole province of major manufacturers exporting aircraft and other large-ticket assets to their big overseas customers, cross-border financing is now in demand for sales of capital equipment with seven, six and even five-figure (in US dollars) price tags. But while lenders worldwide compete heatedly to participate in the large deals, the reception remains considerably chillier for cross-border financing of smaller-ticket equipment. There are currently about 125 million immigrants (people who have moved from one country to another) in the world, 80 million of whom are considered "recent" immigrants. The growing population of immigrant men, women and children has serious impacts for the countries they leave, as well as for the countries which receive them. However, despite the demands of numerous nongovernmental organizations, officials have refused to address this issue in the negotiation of trade and investment liberalization agreements. Such agreements deal only with the free movement of capital, goods, and their agents, but exclude the mobility of workers. The forces driving people to migrate are many. After political violence, the leading reason is the problem of unemployment. Immigration affects not only those who migrate. It has major consequences for the economic and social relationships between countries involved. It is therefore necessary to agree on international rules to address not only the human and labour rights of migrants, but also to regulate the flow of labour. The impacts of immigration are complex. Developing nations have become exporters of workers who are often vulnerable to exploitation. Corporations have taken full advantage of this situation, contributing to the lowering of wages for some workers in host countries. At the same time, the money remitted by the immigrant workers to family members in their homeland plays a major role in reducing problems in the current account balance in developing economies and cushioning social problems and extreme poverty.

We gathered to express our collective rejection of the dominant "neo-liberal" agenda that promotes trade and investment liberalization, deregulation, privatization, and market- driven economics as the formula for development. The Peoples' Summit focused on building a hemispheric social alliance around concrete, viable alternatives. Meanwhile, the Presidents and Prime Ministers of our nations were also meeting in Santiago, attempting to negotiate a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). It is expected that the FTAA will follow the pattern of existing agreements like NAFTA and expand neo-liberalism throughout the hemisphere. This document expresses our determination to construct an alternative to the FTAA based on the proposals described herein. Driving this effort on alternatives is the sense that the neo-liberal economic model has been a disaster for most of the peoples of the hemisphere. Peasants whose labour once fed their nations and themselves are forced to export risky "cash crops" to bring in foreign currency and to provide the well-to-do in the North with meat and fresh produce throughout the year. As economies became more complex, money was created as a more convenient means of exchange. In those early days, money was generally a commodity something valued by the people who agreed to use it. Iron nails were used as money in Scotland, dried cod in Newfoundland, sugar in some West Indies Islands, salt in ancient Rome, wampum by Native Americans, corn in Massachusetts in the 1600s. Sometimes money was backed by a commodity: the first Latin coins were stamped with the image of a cow and could be redeemed for cattle. Paper money was created in the 1700s. It was basically an IOU backed by gold and silver but these standards were abandoned (first in 1933 by President Roosevelt for U.S. citizens, then in 1971 by President Nixon for everyone else), so today our money is backed by nothing but promises (and debt). Thomas Greco, Jr., a community economist and author of New Money for Healthy Communities states that, "The proper kind of money used in the right circumstances is a liberating tool that can allow the fuller expression of human creativity. Money has not lived up to its potential as a liberator because it has been perverted by the monopolization of its creation and by politically manipulating its distribution which makes it available to the favored few and scarce for everyone else."
