Extractions: OTTAWA (CP) Liberals voted down a motion Tuesday by a Bloc Quebecois MP with Acadian roots seeking a formal apology from Britain for the deportation of Acadians more than two centuries ago. Stephane Bergeron's private member's motion sought all party support to request a British apology for the expulsions from the Maritime provinces between 1755 and 1763. Bergeron, who had lobbied Acadian Liberal MPs in the week leading up the vote, made a last-ditch appeal Tuesday in the House. "It's not designed to rewrite history. . .it is designed to heal old wounds. If the House cannot take this step, who will?" he said. "Rejecting this motion would be a new rebuff to the Acadian people and will result in feelings of bitterness and mistrust."

At the University of Denver, professors are using Hollywood films like "Die Hard" and "Key Largo" as springboards for discussing hostage taking and terrorism; one course uses post-Sept. 11 writings by women as a prelude to students' revealing their own responses to the attacks. "If you think of the event as a teachable moment and seize the day intellectually, a lot of good can come from that," said Brian P. Copenhaver, provost of the College of Letters and Science at U.C.L.A.

Extractions: HISTORY COURSES World Cultures: In the freshman World Cultures course, students are introduced to the origins and identities of ancient civilizations whose cultural contributions have shaped contemporary human thought and society. The cultures of the ancient Middle East, China, India and sub-Saharan Africa are studied, as well as those of Classical Greece and Rome and medieval Europe. Students learn research techniques and complete a research paper. Modern European History: This course is a chronological survey of European History to the present. While stressing the development of Western political philosophies, institutions, and practices, the course also examines the economic, social, and cultural (particularly art) experience of Modern Europe. The major areas of focus include the Renaissance and Reformation, the development of the European state system, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolutions, the origins of Liberalism, Nationalism, Socialism, and Marxism, the world wars, the Russian Revolution, Fascism, and Europe during the Cold War. Skills emphasized include reading for understanding using both secondary, primary, and interpretive sources, map comprehension, and reinforcement of the basic writing and research techniques introduced in the freshman year. All students write a thesis-based research paper. AP European History: The course covers the European experience from the Early Renaissance (c1450) through the Cold War. The focus is on the intellectual-cultural, political-diplomatic, and socio-economic areas of European history. Students work with a college level textbook and other primary and interpretive sources.
