Extractions: Murray State University was one of only six public universities in America to make the prestigious Hidden Treasure list, just published by Kaplan Inc. of Riverside, N.J. Survey results were announced in "Kaplans 2003 Most Interesting Colleges" guidebook for students and parents. According to Trent Anderson, vice president for publishing and e-ventures at Kaplan, the treasure ranking was based on academic quality, student environment (including diversity), enrollment growth and affordability. Why most interesting colleges and universities? Because profiling colleges based only on selectivity as many other college guides do leaves you with a fairly homogenous group of schools and excludes schools that might have something unique to offer, Anderson explained. So, what makes a college interesting? Unique programs and academic strengths are obvious criteria. In some cases being a hidden treasure can be an attraction as an alternative to a high-profile school. The student body can make a school interesting, especially if it draws a diverse population. And then theres the buzz factor schools that guidance counselors are always talking about. Our choices are influenced by the inside information we collect from guidance counselors and students, by institutional data such as enrollment figures and selectivity, and by current events at each college (things changing for the better or for the worse).

Many recognize that democracy in the United States and other countries has always been more of an ideal than a reality. The connections between our democracy's failures and persistent inequalities are hard to dispute. The goal of this conference is to begin working toward breaking the barriers and building solutions that will someday result in full civic participation for all. Keynote Speakers: Peter B. Edelman

Governor Mike Huckabee | Current Events several years. Arkansas ranked eighth nationally in the recent Indexof State Economic Momentum from State Policy Reports. The ranking http://www.state.ar.us/governor/legislative_agenda/
Extractions: Jan. 14, 2003 Dear Legislator: Once more, we've gathered at the state Capitol to discuss the future of our state. When we leave here in several months, I'm hopeful we'll be able to say we made Arkansas a better place. Despite the differences we're sure to have on some of the details, I'm convinced we want the same thing. And that's for Arkansas to be an even greater state for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren. For those of you who are legislative veterans, welcome back for another general session. Congratulations on having been returned to office by the voters in your districts. I look forward to working with you again. For the large number of you who are freshmen, welcome. You'll find that a legislative session is an amazing process as Arkansans from all parts of the state and all walks of life gather to determine what should be the priorities of state government. In the hectic weeks to come, I hope none of us lose sight of why we're here. No one denies that we face tremendous challenges. Like virtually every other state in the country, we find that the demands on state government from the taxpayers, the courts and Congress have outstripped the revenue sources available to us. We'll have to make tough choices when it comes to crafting a budget for the next biennium.
