Orbis - Bredesen Slashes Tennessee Budget current events, Already, Tennessee ranks 41st nationally in the size of itsstate government workforce, despite having the 16th largest population. http://www.vanderbiltorbis.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2003/03/19/3e77e36a0b23f
Extractions: Gov. Phil Bredesen unveiled his proposed state budget earlier this month, touting the fiscal plan as a "common-sense budget" similar to that of typical working families throughout Tennessee. The plan features an across-the-board nine percent cut in funding, a decision meant to ensure that everyone shares in bearing the brunt of the state's economic crisis. The reality of the cuts will be significantly more difficult for some to swallow than it will be for others, however. In order to successfully implement the proposed budget, the state will have to eliminate 845 job positions and lay off 207 employees. Among departments losing staff members, the Department of Children's Services will be hardest hit, losing 58 positions in all. The reduction in the workforce will affect not only those who lose their jobs, but also those who must try to meet the same demand for service with a smaller staff. Already, Tennessee ranks 41st nationally in the size of its state government workforce, despite having the 16th largest population.
