Extractions: October - My most recent lectures were at the School of Visual Arts in New York and in San Jose. Wayne Barlowe caught a boat out from New Jersey to hang out with us for a day. His current production at FOX, entitled "Inferno", is well underway and we have begun discussing the making of his next book, Inferno II. August/September - I recently had the honor of working with Ron Cobb and Jacki Morie on a project over at UCS's ICT. Herman Zimmerman did the production design for the ICT project. Paul Debevec's scientific wizardry was also used on the project. Strangely enough the Army has been heavily involved with this project. I've also been traveling around the country working closely with Discreet. March/August - I have been freelancing on a project with a friend up at ILM. Sadly I cannot disclose the project until it's completion date. Most of my time, profits and funding continue to be fed into the making of Alptraum. I'll be at Siggraph with Discreet in New Orleans this year, hope to see you all there.

Extractions: January 1, 2000, the first day of the new millennium, the day when the Y2K virus will cause all of our machines to fail thereby bringing world civilization to a halt, falls on Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest. Now that is irony. Truth be told, Y2K will probably not wreak the predicted global havoc. Instead, it will be a minor blip in the march of civilization, a small and curious footnote future historians will write regarding this age. However, looked at from a different angle, Y2K is not a technological problem to be solved through updated computer software. Rather, Y2K symbolizes and perhaps is the culmination of a historical shift regarding the connection between the human species and the natural world. Simply put, we are rapidly becoming less and less connected to the elemental world of dirt, water, and air, while becoming more and more connected to and dependent on the virtual world of ram, bytes, and modems. While this shift certainly predates the quagmire of Y2K, we are now witnessing its acceleration. We are at the point when a seemingly insignificant computer glitch poses the possibility of disrupting our food supply, destroying our banking system, and launching a thermonuclear attack. As we move from the real to the virtual world, we come to identify the Earth not as "Our Mother," but rather as "The Other." By relating to the Earth as Other, for example, we allow the unbridled destruction of the biosphere to take place with only minor feelings of shame, guilt, and remorse.
