Extractions: This represents the last period of the Stone Age and the oldest known settlements in Cyprus are found at Choirokiteia, Kalavasos - Tenta, Apostolos Andreas - Kastros, Phrenaros, Petra tou Limani. The characterization of this period were polished stone implements. The origins of the first inhabitants of Cyprus, the Eteo-Cypriots, are unknown. The earliest settlement found at Choirokiteia date back from 5800 BC. The dwellings uncovered at this site are round, beehive shaped huts built of stones and mud from the riverbed. Skeleton remains of the inhabitants were found inside the huts, buried under the floor, together with stone vases and tools of bone and obsidian. The latter suggests that there might have been an early contact with Asia Minor, where this mineral is found. During a transitional period of 2-3000 years stone vessels were replaced with pottery and the round huts by rectangular dwellings such as those found in Sotira.

In the Pleistocen glacial episodes the minimum distance of Cyprus to the mainland would have been 30 km. Cyprus, though a small island, has always played an important role in the history of the Mediterranean, far exceeding its size. The first signs of undisputed human activity can be traced back to the 8th millennium BC when the first settlements are encountered. Vestiges of such early communities are found all over the island, such as at Khirokitia , Kalavasos-Tenta, Apostolos Andreas-Kastros, Phrenaros, Petra tou Limniti etc. Neolithic Cypriots built circular houses with small undressed stones for the lower structures and sun-dried mudbricks and clay for the middle and superstructure. The daily life of the people in those neolithic villages was spent in farming, hunting, animal husbandry and the lithic industry, while women were engaged in spindling and weaving cloths, in addition to their probable participation in other activities. The lithic industry was the most individual feature of this aceramic culture and innumerable stone vessels made of grey andesite have been discovered during excavations.

The Late Bronze Age (16001050 BC) was one of the most formative periods of the life of ancient Cyprus. The island's international contacts extended from the Aegean Sea to the Levant and the Nile River delta. (Thutmose III of Egypt claimed Cyprus as one of his conquests about 1500 BC.) Writing, in the form of a linear script known as Cypro-Minoan, was borrowed from Crete. Cypriot craftsmen were distinguished for fine jewelry, ivory carving, and bronze figures. From about 1400 BC Mycenaean pottery was imported from mainland Greece, and it is possible that Mycenaean artists accompanied the merchants. After 1200 BC, with the collapse of Mycenaean civilization, there is evidence of Greek immigration from the Peloponnese. West of Famagusta was Engomi, the principal city and port; its massive city walls and houses of hewn stone demonstrate a high degree of prosperity.

First the Mycenaeans grabbed it, then the Phoenicians, Egyptians, Assyrians and Persians. Alexander the Great took it off them, then Ptolemy snatched it from him. Rome took over in 58 BC and kept the place in relative peace and security until the 7th century, when the Byzantine and Islamic empires started three centuries of bickering over it. In 1191, Richard the Lionheart, on his way to the Crusades, dropped into Cyprus for a spot of conquering, but the Cypriots caused him too much trouble (one of them killed his hawk and he was forced to massacre a few villages in retaliation), so he sold them to the Knights Templar. The Templars sold the island to Guy de Lusignan, whose heirs hung in for three centuries, repressing the culture and orthodox religion but doing wonders for the economy. The Venetians took over in 1489, but were booted out by the expanding Ottoman Empire in 1571, which kept Cyprus for 300 years before handing over to Britain. In 1925 Cyprus became a Crown colony of the UK, but by then the Cypriots had had just about enough of being a pawn for empire-builders, and agitation for self-determination began. The Hellenization of Cyprus was complete, with ten city-kingdoms. The cult of Aphrodite flourished in a period of great prosperity. 750-325 B.C.- Archaic and Classical Period. An era of prosperity and conquest. Cypriot kingdoms became tributary to Assyria, Egypt and Persia. But King Evagoras (411-374) unified the island, making it an important center of the Greek world. 333-325 B.C.- Alexander the Great, King of Macedonia, takes Cyprus as part of his empire. 325-58 B.C.- Hellenistic Period. 58-B.C.-330 A.D.- Roman Period. Cyprus became part of the Roman Empire. But Saints Paul and Barnabas converted the Roman proconsul to Christianity, and he became the first Christian ruler in the world. In 313 freedom of worship was granted, and Cypriot bishops attended the council of Nicea in 325. The period was marked by earthquakes that required the rebuilding of cities. 330-1191 A.D. -
