The first section concentrates on history from the beginning of the 5th century with the arrival of the Slavs in what is known now as Moravia and Slovakia, until the movement to restore the country to a federalist state in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Extractions: The Slavs started settling in this part of Europe around 5th century AD and those who moved into Bohemia were, according to the legend, led by a chief called Cech. Cech decided to settle in the area after surveying the fertile countryside from the top of the hill Rip. The ancestors of Czech and Slovaks became united in the early 9th century in the Great Moravian Empire . It was around this time when Christianity was spread by two Greek missionaries Cyril and Methodius, who came to the country after the Moravian leader Count Rostislav appealed in 863 to the Emperor Michael of Byzantium to send clergy capable of expounding the Christian faith in the language of the Slavs. The brothers preached in the Slav language, created a new Slav alphabet and translated religious texts that laid foundations for further development of Slav literature. After the death of Rostislav, his sucessor allied himself with German clerics and the Slav liturgy was replaced with the Latin-Germanic. Moravia and Bohemia came under the influence of Roman Catholic Church and the Slav liturgy and script were driven eastwards. At the beginning of the 10th century the Great Moravian Empire did not withstand the Magyar invasion and broke up. Its southern part, Slovakia, came under Magyar rule and was incorporated into the new country the Magyars created. This rule was to last for a whole millennium, until the emergence of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. Moravia, on the other hand, became integrated into Bohemia, which was in the meantime developing into an important power in its own right.

The emblem of Bohemia proper (once it had replaced the Premyslid "flaming eagle" still used in depiction of St. Vaclav) is a white lion with two tails, rampant on a red field. The two eagles represent Moravia and Silesia. The red-and-white chequerboard eagle on a blue field is Moravia, which was referred to by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa as an independent Margraviate in the twelfth century, though it was soon tied firmly to the lands of the Czech crown by the tradition of making the Czech king or his heir margrave. The black eagle on the gold field represents Silesia. Only fragments of the historical territory of Silesia remain in the Czech Republic today, around Opava and Tesin, but all of it came under the Czech crown during the reign of John of Luxemburg and his son Charles IV. Many European national flags derive from former royal coats of arms, and the Czech one is no exception. Since a complicated coat of arms could not be seen from a distance during a conflict, the coat was reduced to a standard displayed on a lance point, usually (following the customary descriptions of coats of arms) as bars of horizontal colors. So, the Czech kings flew a standard of a bar of white "on" a bar of red, representing the white lion on the red field.

Between 1953 - 1972 he was employed as an editor and musical producer of the Czechoslovak Radio in Prague, since 1972 he has devoted himself exclusively to creation. Although miost of the works by Viktor Kalabis belong to the sphere of the so-called absolute music, we must not fail to mention his vocal compositions - songs and choirs for children settings of folk poetry, and others. For Tereza Csaibok and the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra was written his cycle Five Romantic Love Songs to Words by R.M. rilke (sung on a gramophone record by Ernst Haeflinger). His first and so far only excursion to the sphere of stage forms was his ballet in two parts called "Two Worlds", inspired by L. Carroll s book "Alice in Wonderland". The compositions by Viktor Kalabis won a number of prizes in state-wide competitions. In 1967 he was awarded the Prize of Czechoslovak Musical Critics, in 1969 the Klement Gottwald State Prize. In 1983 he was named Artist of Merit. However, great apreciation is represented by the fact that his works are constantly on the repertories of prominent Czechoslovak and world performing artists.
