1. Does your spouse or partner complain that you spend too much money?

2. Are you surprised each month when your credit card bill arrives at how much more you charged than you thought you had?

3. Do you have more shoes and clothes in your closet than you could ever possibly wear?

If you answered “yes” to any two of the above questions, you are an impulse spender and indulge yourself in retail therapy.

Product Description
In the weird glow of the dying millennium, Michael Lewis sets out on a safari through Silicon Valley to find the world's most important technology entrepreneur, the man who embodies the spirit of the coming age. He finds him in Jim Clark, who is about to create his third, separate, billion-dollar company: first Silicon Graphics, then Netscape - which launched the Information Age - and now Healtheon, a startup that may turn the $1 trillion healthcare industry on its head.

Despite the variety of his achievements, Clark thinks of himself mainly as the creator of Hyperion, which happens to be a sailboat - not just an ordinary yacht, but the world's largest single-mast vessel, a machine more complex than a 747. Clark claims he will be able to sail it via computer from his desk in San Francisco, and the new code may contain the seeds of his next billion-dollar coup.

On the wings of Lewis' celebrated storytelling, the listener takes the ride of a lifetime through this strange landscape of geeks and billionaires. We get the inside story of the battle between Netscape and Microsoft; we sit in the room as Clark tries to persuade the investment bankers that Healtheon IS the new Microsoft; we get queasy as Clark pits his boat against the rage of the North Atlantic in winter. And in every brilliant anecdote and character sketch, Lewis is drawing us a map of markets and free enterprise in the twenty-first century.Amazon.com Review
Michael Lewis was supposed to be writing about how Jim Clark, the founder of Silicon Graphics and Netscape, was going to turn healthcare on its ear by launching Healtheon, which would bring the vastmajority of the industry's transactions online. So why was he spendingso much time on a computerized yacht, each feature installed because,as one technician put it, "someone saw it on Star Trek andwanted one just like it?"

Much of The New New Thing, to be fair, is devoted to theHealtheon story. It's just that Jim Clark doesn't do startups the waymost people do. "He had ceased to be a businessman," as Lewis puts it,"and become a conceptual artist." After coming up with the basic ideafor Healtheon, securing the initial seed money, and hiring the peopleto make it happen, Clark concentrated on the building ofHyperion, a sailboat with a 197-foot mast, whose functions arecontrolled by 25 SGI workstations (a boat that, if he wanted to, Clarkcould log onto and steer--from anywhere in the world). Keeping up withClark proves a monumental challenge--"you didn't interact with him,"Lewis notes, "so much as hitch a ride on the back of his life"--butone that the author rises to meet with the same frenetic energy andhumor of his previous books, Liar's Poker andTrail Fever.

Like those two books, The New New Thing shows how the pursuitof power at its highest levels can lead to the very edges of thesurreal, as when Clark tries to fill out an investment profile for aSwiss bank, where he intends to deposit less than .05 percent of hisfinancial assets. When asked to assess his attitude toward financialrisk, Clark searches in vain for the category of "people who sought toturn ten million dollars into one billion in a few months" and finallytells the banker, "I think this is for a different ... person." Therehave been a lot of profiles of Silicon Valley companies and theway they've revamped the economy in the 1990s--The New NewThing is one of the first books fully to depict the sort of manthat has made such companies possible. --Ron Hogan ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Hello McFly! - Biff Tannen would have been better off with this book than with the Sports Almanac
It is hard to fathom Jim Clark, whom this book is really about, lead three different Billion Dollar companies: Silicon Graphics, Netscape, and Healtheon (WebMD). He and his companies are the focus of this book. The author also gives a heck of a review of the crazy times that were the late 1990s in technology but as well as the stock market. I think Biff Tannen (you know Biff from Back to the Future) would have been better off with this book than his Sports Almanac. Imagine knowing the exact companies to pick in the stock market during the tech stock bubble. Not only that but when to take your money off the table and out of the market.

After having read first Moneyball, then the Blindside it was wired to go backwards and read one of Michael Lewis's earlier works. He has certainly improved as time has gone forward. This book seemed a bit more raw, and less polished than his later works. It was nice to walk through the time line of the internet bubble again and think back to when the most legally created money was happening in history. Again this is why I think Biff would have been better off with this than the almanac from Back to the Future. Our good friend Biff probably would have had a hard time finding his way to Vegas to make a legal bet. Just as in the line from the book "Change leads to wealth and wealth means money", in Biff's case or Jim Clark's.

It was shocking to find out the main reason Clark pushed for the Netscape IPO was to finance his boat. In fact the story of the boat he built felt really disjointed but they do tie together Silicon Valley and starting up companies with building a computerized yacht. I really despise the fact Jim created myCFO. To create yet another company after he has already start 3 with such a simple concept is irritating to us mere mortals.

I would say only three groups of people would enjoy this book:

1. Michael Lewis Fans
2. Tech nerds who want to hear the inside story of SGI and Netscape
3. People from the valley who want to recall the gold old days

Other than those groups you can probably skip this one. Well, that is unless you have a time machine and want to make some serious money in the stock market.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT WRITER -- ENLIGHTENING PERSPECTIVE
One of my favorite writers, Lewis makes the deep, dark secretive world of money matters comprehensible.Even to me.
And he does it with humor, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Michael Lewis
I read this book because I am a fan of Michael Lewis, and I enjoyed reading Liar's Poker and Moneyball. This book is about Jim Clark and Silicon Valley. Clark was an unsuccessful college professor who founded three billion-dollar companies: Silicon Graphics, Netscape, and Healtheon. I personally liked the part about Silicon Valley. I found it very educational to learn how an idea can be taken from scratch and at the end sold in the public markets through an IPO. After reading this book, people who are constantly chasing the next hot IPOs may wake up and realize that most of the money has already been made by the founders, venture capitalists, and investment bankers, before leftovers are served for the public.

- Mariusz Skonieczny, author of Why Are We So Clueless about the Stock Market? Learn how to invest your money, how to pick stocks, and how to make money in the stock market

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad read, although nothing spectacular
One has to remember that this book was written during the burst of the Internet bubble. At that time, the general view is that the Internet bubble were purely speculative and would not have any lasting impact.Michael Lewis went against the conventional wisdom at the time and described in a series of tales the transformational powers of the web still being played out.The stories did not quite make a coherent whole. However, the observations were relevant.

In terms of writing, this book does not compare favorably to the master piece "Liar's Poker."Therefore, I give it a 3 star.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Boat
It's all about the boat. Here, Michael Lewis follows the career of Jim Clark, founder of Silicon Graphics (now SGI), Netscape (now, well, something else) and then Healtheon (something else again.) Along the way Clark makes a zillion dollars and gets investment money as easily as turning on a tap. Although this book is quite old now (in terms of Internet years) the same basic lessons seem to be applicable in today's (well, until 2008s crash anyway) environment. That is, (a) suffer from ADD (or is it ADHD?), and know when to spin the message way beyond hyperbole. Clark comes across as a super-intelligent hyperactive child. Had he been 15 years old, he'd have been put on a cocktail of drugs and told to sit in the corner and be quiet. Instead he's given hundreds of millions of dollars of investors money on business plans and ideas written on what feels like restaurant napkins. Lewis, the writer, seems to be dragged along for the ride hanging on for dear life.
Reading it now, after the IT crash of 2001 and the General Collapse of 2008, I have no pity for how any of those people might be suffering now. They had the very, very high life. Clark however doesn't forget the small people who have helped him along the way and makes sure that stock options are given out to those slaving over the hot keyboards.
All through the book though, Clark's dream of owning the biggest sail boat ever holds the story together and act as a message of the size of the plans Clark has. And how no matter how big Clark sees or wants something, there are still physical laws that limit him. One thinks that if Clark could rewrite the laws of the universe, he would. Or at least start a company with investors money to try and do it, float it on the NASDAQ then live off the profits. Until the next New New Thing comes along. ... Read more

Product Description
A budget is basically a money plan, outlining your financial goals. Having a budget, you can well establish and regulate funds, set and achieve your financial objectives, and make advance decisions as to how you want your finances to function well for you.

The main idea in budgeting is for you to put aside a certain amount of money for expected as well as unexpected costs.

Simply put, budgeting means an estimation of monthly home expenses basing it on previous expenses and bills.

The initial step to take in budgeting is to find out how long will your compensation last. Define fixed expenses like car payments, home rental, insurance, etc. Likewise follow up your expenditures thoroughly for a month so you can discover and understand where your funds are going. Through proper determination of your “spending patterns”, you can immediately identify solutions for effective budgeting.

For instance, when you have a steady monthly income of $4,000, you should subtract all your identified monthly bills from that income.

Other bills can be assessed and then subtracted from the amount of your income. The balance that remained after fixed costs can now be your budget in the household. Rather than allocating money for miscellaneous like gas, clothing, entertainment and groceries, financial planning will allow you instead to use proportions or percentages of it.

The strategic solution in order for budgeting to be successful is inflexibility as well as flexibility; there are fixed expenses so payment must be an inflexible factor.

Budgeting will best work when very scarce omissions are made to greater limits. The idea here is to formulate goals and plans, then abide by it as much as you possibly can.

Here are tips on how to budget.....

I've been trading for over twenty years, including a period as a floor trader on the Chicago Board of Trade.Even with that experience there are tips and tricks in this book I found useful to the point where I employ them daily. To be complete as a reviewer I will say there is a lot of pretty basic stuff from my point of view, but still well worth reviewing since some of it I had forgotten.

Well written, easy reading, well organized

I worked at Enron from 1998 through 2001, and spent plenty of time during that dot.com era following my stock portfolio.I watched my Enron stock value go from incredible value to a point where it cost more to sell the stock than it was worth.I won a few bets (face it, that's what they were) on a few dot.coms and lost many more. What could have been an incredible nest egg, isn't.This book would have been a lifesaver if I had read and paid attention to it a few years ago.Biafore shows you how you can analyze and invest wisely using a variety of tools available to everyone.

If you're an Excel user, you'll find it an invaluable tool for analysis. She'll show you how you can use it to create financial charts (#13), calculate compound annual rates of growth (#26), and use rational values to buy and sell wisely (#36).#39 - Spot Hanky Panky with Cash Flow Analysis (using Enron as an example) would have literally saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars had I known about it.Even if you don't care about the investing tips, the hack on downloading data via Excel web queries (#7) was something I didn't know how to do (or that you could even do it!).The book has a little something for everyone.

As with all Hacks titles, you probably won't be interested in every single item. Some may not be applicable to your situation or may be too complex for what you care to handle. But all it would take is one hack to work out and change your investing for this book to pay huge dividends. If you do your own investing, you owe it to yourself to get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference/Resource
Online Investing Hacks is an excellent introduction to the world of investment. Though the title does contain the word 'Online', I would say that the general information the book provides on investing is not limited to the online realm.

Overall, I was very happy with the book, and found it incredibly useful. Though I do have several investments (401K, some stock, mutual funds etc) I would hardly consider myself an authority on the subject. This book provided very detailed explanations and tips on various forms of investment, from CD's to Index funds, and everything in between. While the experienced investor might not glean much from reading this book, anyone just getting started will find it an excellent reference, and resource.

The format of the book is similar to the other books in the 100 * Hacks series published by O'Reilly. There are exactly 100 hacks, or topics, which are spread across 9 chapters. Each one is an individual entity and can be read and understood without reliance on any of the other hacks.

One minor annoyance I had with the book is that it is geared toward those of you who, for some reason or another, run Microsoft's Windows OS, or have access to Microsoft Excel. Luckily, of the Excel examples that I played with, Open Office's Calc program handled them with minimal tweaking.

I can easily recommend this book to anyone who wants to invest, but is unsure of what to invest in, or needs some tips on making the most of preexisting investments. Those of you who enjoy research and building your own stats and graphs will also find parts of this book rather intriguing, as it covers data acquisition and manipulation with Excel in great detail. It will make an excellent addition to my reference shelf, and I have a feeling it will be well thumbed through in a very short time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for all investors
It seems like everyone is involved in investing in some form or another. While I always felt like I should be investing too, it was never clear to me how to begin this process. After all, it's my money. How can I be sure I'm investing in something that will provide some sort of reasonable return? This book is an excellent resource in answering some of those questions and putting the new investor on the right track.

This book is written in the same format as the other "hacks" series by O'Reilly. This format is very easy to read, and the format makes it very easy to find answers.Rather then having to read the book from cover to cover, the reader can pick out topics they are dealing with, read the answer, and move on.Since many of the people interesting in a book of this nature will likely have little time, the book's format works to its advantage.

The book begins with some basic introduction to the stock market and tips for selecting appropriate stocks or mutual funds. The whole middle section of the book deals with data analysis. The author discusses how to understand a company's balance sheet (e.g. what that P/E ratio means), how to spot companies in financial trouble, how to pick a good stock, and even how to trade. There is also a good discussion on minimizing the effect of taxes on your little return on investment.

The author even goes further and gets into a discussion on financial planning. In addition to discussing debt reduction, the author also talks about IRA plans and different strategies for saving for your child's education expenses.I think my favorite part of this book was the discussion on different education savings plans. The author discusses the ins and outs (as well as tax consequences) of each of the plans, and provides some examples illustrating the fact that it's better to start saving earlier than later.

This is an excellent book, not just for its investing advice, but also for its sound financial planning. This is a great book for anyone who is interested in increasing their wealth, saving for a rainy day, or simply saving for future financial goals.
