Overall a great book but it iscustomized book for a college so one chapter was left out -- the entire chapter on regression!I did not know that when I purchased it or I would not have gotten it.

the book came before the expected due date. It was better than I expected. Kudos.

Excellent book, but dated
A wonderful book full of equations. Excellent commentary on how to make calculations and the use of calculators. However, the data in the book is based on epoch 1990 and is out dated. With this being 2009, the data should be based on epoch J2000.0, and, with this epoch ending soon, the book should be updated to epoch J2010.0. This is just a fall back and calculations can still be made, but the resulting numbers are much larger to deal with. Otherwise, this is a valuable book for the equations and calculations.

Nice cookbook, nice price
If you're a beginning astronomer, the recipes in this book are well written out and you can port them easily to a calculator, computer or even a spreadsheet if you so wish. So it's a very good book indeed. But... You're left with a certain feeling that you want to know more. Where do all those fancy formulas come from? Conclusion : I will have to buy myself another introductory book on the subject!

Hard for AP students as a first stat text
I was approached by AP Stat students for help.I was asked to read their text book and explain it to them.
As their first statistics book, the text becomes progressively more difficult to follow though it's alright in the beginning. It is all over the places; one has to look all over the back pages to for the same examples for data, plots, residuals..so on. Definitely not a clearly presented step by step text. I agree with Mr.P.'s review that teachers should shun this book.

This was a second-hand textbook and it was better than advertised and it arrived quicker than advertised. Couldn't be better.

Great for Independent Learning
This textbook is very easy to follow with many examples to reference.The wording is very simple--nothing too complex throughout the textbook.It also shows 83/84 and 89 step-by-step examples right next to each other (no need to follow one when you have the other calculator).Overall, I like this textbook since it's very simplified and easy to follow for "on your own" learners.

Great Starter Book
This a great book for a child starting out learning some basic concepts of math formulas, it uses alot of visual's instead of numbers to teach some concepts, I would recommend for the young ones learning addition and subtraction.

Math + Magic = A Waste of Money
This book promises a lot but delivers very little. The guy who originally sold them was a great salesman, Scott even got on Opera once. But after buying the book I don't see why. Very little ofit was interesting or of value. However the books are poorly laid out, poorly explained and even worse are the illustrations. I bought them with high hopes to help my child with math. We tossed them aside after one quick read. If you need to learn or teach math get a Spectrum Book. These were nothing more then a waste of money. I always look and find something good about everyone and everything. I found a great use for these books. Not only do the pages line the bottom of a bird cage nicely, they also make great fire starters. Don't waste your money.

Good math ideas, but should be a workbook
There's honestly nothing wrong with this book. A lot of reviewers have used it and found it helpful for their children.My problem is that it's written for children, but it's in an adult format, meaning it's in a hard bound book measuring about 5" by 8" and written in a fairly small type.My 6 year old would have trouble reading "Harry Potter" by herself, she'd have a hard time reading this one too.The writing is at about the same level. And yet the book starts out with kindergarten and 1st grade level work. The book is written in a way that you could read the games and stories to your kindergarten aged child, but the presentation isn't kindergarten level, it's more 2nd grade level.

I wish the book was in a workbook form, with a lot of child-friendly illustrations and places to write.Instead you either have to have your child write in pencil and erase, or photocopy each exercise to keep the book clean.It isn't just that I'm a clean freak, writing in a book this thick isn't easy, especially for a 6 year old.

In the end the math concepts, games and fun drawings could draw children in and get them excited about math, but the book form and presentation could be much more child friendly.

Making numbers make sense!
Mr.Flansburg's methods of stressing basic math skills are new and important before algebra or higher math will make sense. Amazing book
It is a pity that one can give only 5 stars! This book deserves more!
I have always been intrigued by the inner workings of a computer or calculator.
Even tried to study some assembly, but never succeeded to fully comprehend it.
The front cover may suggest it is going to be nothing than fun, like in some 'for dummies' books. (Although these books have there use.)
No, this is serious business here, but explained in a not overdone fun style, and explained in such a way even I can finally understand the subject.
It also contains many practical labs(with the DIY calculator) which enhance your knowledge in no time.
This is a great book to have!

I got this for my 13-year-old niece.She brought it to school and the other kids were fighting over who got to read it - while someone was giving a class presentation.I was pleased.

Excellent View into How Computer Really Do Math
The Definitive Guide to How Computers Do Math : Featuring the Virtual DIY Calculator provides an excellent view into how computers _really_ perform math.While not a complete introduction to the subject (I would recommend learning a bit about Boolean logic and digital circuitry before starting here), it does offer a complete, thorough, and thoroughly fun journey to creating your own "working" computer.Along the way, you will learn the fun and fundamental details behind the mystery and magic of computers.

I've used the material (the book's CD-ROM includes bonus material) to teach computer architecture classes to students as young and middle-school.I've also used this book as a prize to up-and-coming computer science or electrical engineering students in the local elementary and middle-school science fair.

The author, Clive ("Max") Maxfield, has an engaging and entertaining style. You will likely enjoy his other books including Bebop to the Boolean Boogie, Third Edition: An Unconventional Guide to Electronics, which I also highly recommend.

Go Figure
This is an accurate, first-order of detail on how computers work. The CD is a nice bonus. I would recommend this text for high schoolers and above.

I am a hobbyist and have found this book invaluable. I have a Computer Science background and so have no problems with the concepts. Even if you do have problems with the concepts, the Labs are a walk-through
and one can then kind of 'get it'.

Awesome! Where were these methods when I was in School?
An absolutely amazing and easy (once you get the hang of it) COMPLETE re-imagining of how to simply solve Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Square Root, and Cube Root problems. Ever on the quest for increasing my knowledge, I curiously purchased it after seeing Scott on a talk show, by chance, on Youtube.

After receiving it, I then watched the video one time, then another (as he recommends). And upon beginning to grasp his Very out-of-the-box style of approaching math problems, I really took to his system. And I'm encouraged by having his instruction in video form (though DVD would be better ;)), along with a very cool workbook that goes hand-in-hand with his video examples.

I'm hearing that what Scott is teaching in this vid is similar to what's been called 'new math' now being taught in schools. And all I can say is that it sure would've made things a lot easier for me, had this been the rule back when I was in school. LOL. Great Methods shared here in this package. A definite winner in my book.

The book is by no means new, but the algorithms and methods are still good.Can be a useful source for writing astronomy programs.

Out of date, but still useful
This book was a best-seller when it was first published because it was almost the only one source that could help amateurs to unveil the hidden misteries of ephemerides computing.

The book was written before the eraof the personal computer, when a common person only had access to thoseluxurious HP or TI programmable calculators, and therefore you cannotexpect to get highly accurate results from it because its algorithms weredesigned to run on those quite limited machines.

Simple word games with a calculator that conform to a biblical theme
The appearance of the inexpensive hand-held calculator in the 1970's spawned a new form of recreation. Some of the digits rendered in the display had the appearance of letters when turned upside down. For example, zero was an "O", one was an "I", three was an "E", five was an "S", seven was an "L" and eight was a "B."
Problems were then invented where people inserted words into their calculators in numeric form, performed the operations and got a word back in numeric form that was translated by turning the calculator upside down.
This book is a collection of such problems that conform to a biblical theme and solutions are included. It is an interesting way to study bible passages and I am sure that young children would find them amusing. My experience is in recreational math/words using a calculator and for a short time there was a great interest in the calculator word games. I personally found the problems fun to work through.
