Excerpt: Elk, Mendocino County, California -Elk was originally called "Greenwood" after early homesteaders, the Greenwood brothers, sons of mountain man Caleb Greenwood, one of the rescuers of the Donner Party. When the post office was opened, in 1887, there was already another Greenwood in California so it was called Elk Post Office. Eventually the name came to refer to the town. It is an outgrowth of an earlier town called Cuffy's Cove and the cemetery is located at that townsite a mile north of Elk. When pioneer lumberman Lorenzo White was unable to reach a satisfactory deal with the owners of the lumber chutes at Cuffy's Cove to ship out his redwood product, he constructed a wharf out along a string of rocks in the center of what is now Elk. When he built a large steam sawmill and 3-foot (90-cm) gauge railroad, the new employment drained the town of Cuffy's Cove which was eventually abandoned. The sawmill was producing 80,000 board feet of lumber per day by 1890. The mill was sold to Goodyear Redwood Company in 1916. Elk River Company took over the sawmill when Goodyear went bankrupt in 1932. The local redwood lumber industry economy collapsed when the uninsured sawmill burned in 1936. Another sawmill was built in about 1953 and one more in 1963. These operated until the late 1960s when the redwood and Douglas fir was mostly logged out. After some quiet times, the town has had a rebirth as a recreation destination. Many of the larger old houses are now Bed ... Read more

Product Description
Ellis Island, at the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor, is the location of what was from January 1, 1892, until November 12, 1954 the main entry facility for immigrants entering the United States; the facility replaced the state-run Castle Garden Immigration Depot (1855?1890) in Manhattan. It is owned by the Federal government and is now part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, under the jurisdiction of the US National Park Service. Ellis Island was also the subject of a border dispute between the states of New York and New Jersey (see below). It is situated predominantly in Jersey City, New Jersey, although a small portion of its territory falls within neighboring New York City. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The geography of California is diverse. There are alpine mountains, foggy coastlines, hot deserts, and a fertile central valley. The U.S. state of California is home to some of the world's most exceptional trees: the tallest (coast redwood), most massive (Giant Sequoia), and oldest (bristlecone pine). It is also home to both the highest (Mt. Whitney) and lowest (Death Valley) points in the 48 contiguous states. The state is generally divided into Northern and Southern California, although the boundary between the two is not well defined. San Francisco is decidedly a Northern California city and Los Angeles likewise a Southern California one, but areas in between do not often share their confidence in geographic identity. The US Geological Survey defines the geographic center of the state at a point near North Fork, California. ... Read more

Product Description
Many hardy adventurers have come to California in their search for new lands, and the romantic story of their travels and hardships are matters that every dweller in this state will find of interest. The early discoverers came by way of the sea, but after the discovery of gold, all manner of men came overland. California's rich underground lakes of oil and the great numbers of persons who were attracted by the lure of acquiring fortunes in the oil fields have added another epoch to the history of this far western state. The climate, too, has been a source of attraction for people from colder parts of the world. This book attempts to tell some of the most important facts about California and the bearing these have had on the development of the state. Pictures, maps, charts, and graphs have been freely used in an effort to concentrate much information in a small space. All data used in this book were obtained from official state and government sources only. [From the Preface] ... Read more
