Product Description

Frying and sautéing steaks, fish, and other foods in a skillet may seem to be a simple procedure, but there are enough variations and subtleties to make it interesting. It’s a hands-on, special kind of cooking in which success often depends more on technique, skill, and tender-loving care than on a complicated recipe with a long list of ingredients. In The Curmudgeon’s Book of Skillet Cooking, A. D. Livingston demonstrates that if you enjoy good eating and take pleasure in your cooking, a skillet may be the only pan you need. With chapters on:

* Skilletmanship * Beef and pork * Burgers * Poultry and fowl * Venison and game * Fish and shellfish * Exotic meats * Skillet vegetables * Skillet breads * Breakfasts * Skillet gravy

Featuring more than 101 delicious recipes—with complete, easy-to-follow cooking instructions for such treats as Sumac Trout, Cross Creek Crackling Bread, Versatile Venison Burgers, Steaks Cognac, and Sopchoppy Pancakes—The Curmudgeon’s Book of Skillet Cooking is ideal for both indoor and outdoor chefs.

Product Description
Cooking in the backcountry has come a long way in recent years. A wide variety of light, easy to prepare foods that weren't on the market 10 years ago are now available for campers and backpackers. This book offers information on how to eat well when camping or backpacking.

Backcountry cooking is almost always done on a single burner stove with a limited fuel supply, so this book abounds with one-pot meals that take no more than 20 minutes to cook. The general advice and more than two dozen recipes will broaden your selections and give some options that you might not have thought about. The trail-tested recipes are simple to make, yet tasty enough to use on trip after trip. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a backpacker
The only reason that I gave this book only 3 stars is because it didn't meet my specific needs as well as I hoped. However I am not a "roughing it" kind of gal. We camp in a motorhome. For the person who is an avid hiker or backpacker-type camper, this book is marvelous. There aren't a lot of pages, so it is easy and lightweight to pack along and it offers many helpful suggestions on both food and drink. It could be a definite boon to the backpacker, so I would recommend it for this use. There are about 25 recipes (two or more per page) and several pages of suggested "easy to prepare" foods that can be purchased in the supermarket and are economical to carry. There is a section on drinking water safety and information about cookstoves, how to prepare coffee, etc. This is a book very well suited for a primitive camper, not necessarily an rv-er. An rv-er may find the few recipes helpful, though, if they enjoy cooking over the campfire. ... Read more

Thiis book give intruction on how to cook on a fire. A skill every needs if their stove fail in the backwoods. I love the fact that it includes some old ways old reciepes dating back from the begining of this country.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good basic starter book
This is a little less useful for those of you who limit youselves only to light and ultralight backpack camping, but for everyone else, it is a good resource.I checked this out from the public library and decided to order it so I could have a copy anytime I wanted it.I loved the section on bannock bread, and I am ready to go out and get a dutch oven just to try the recipes contained in that section. There is also sections on baking, using sourdough, and aluminum foil cooking. It covers several types of cooking from a simple camp stove, and open-fire, to cooking using a sheepherders stove and pit cooking. There is even a section on smoking food.A really interesting book and I'm glad I have it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Julia Child in the Back Country!!
When you don't need the Full on cook book and want EASY - short alternatives; try THIS book.
ALL the Principles of NOLS cooking, but SO much simpler!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Me!
I am going to school to become a National Park Ranger, and this book instills a lot of values that we look for in our National Park visitors. These things include 'Leave No Trace' and the menu choices are definately affordable and healthy!Great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars NOLS knows backcountry cooking!
If you have ever taken a NOLS course out of the Rocky Mountain branch, then you've most likely experienced the privilege of working with Claudia and the wonderful staff at The Gulch, who are extremely wise in the realm of nutrition, and very experienced with helping students. I really learned to eat in style while backpacking - and more importantly, how to supply myself with the proper amount of fuel for physically arduous expeditions.

During my Outdoor Educator Semester, we lived out of the Nols Cookery (National Outdoor Leadership School) - a wonderful book filled with recipes and strategies for bulk ration meals, a staple of the NOLS philosophy and the foundation of the best eating that I've ever done in the wilderness. Having had to return to the harsh reality of life outside of NOLS, I constantly found myself wondering how to adapt the skills I acquired to shorter trips, while maintaining the high quality of the food I cooked.

This book was made exactly for that purpose; imagine my delight! Repackaged in a convenient smaller size, easy to take with you, and filled with wisdom and some of the finer and more simply prepared recipes that NOLS has to offer. For baking, you'll want to acquire the NOLS Cookery (I made some WICKED pizza in the canyons of Southeast Utah, along with some death-by-peanut-butter-brownies,) but for delicious meals like the Gado-Gado spaghetti or cheesy hash browns, this book has you covered.

My recommendation? Get both the Cookery (write some of the recipes down) and this book, and take this one in your pack with your recipe notes. My thanks to Claudia, Joanne, Pat, and the rest of the amazing support staffwho made this book and all the expeditions out of the RMB possible! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Campers!
This is one of the best camping cookbooks I have purchased. Wanted recipes that I could actually cook over a campfire vs. a Coleman stove. Got what I was looking for in this book. The recipes are simple and easy. I have used it extensively. Contains some great shortcuts too. Would highly recommend this book to any camper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Camping Information
This book has a wealth of information for campers with all levels of experience. It will be a valued reference for us from now on when we plan to go camping whether it's for a weekend or longer.I will be interested in any other camping books written by this author.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic and Boring
The information in this book is accurate and presented clearly, but the techniques and recipes are extremely basic and boring.I won't need to refer to it for reference and thus won't be keeping my copy.Incidentally, no guidelines or plans are given for anything like the stone stove shown in the cover photo.Since that's such an attractive set-up, I think it's misleading to not include info on it in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff!
I have quite a few cookbooks, and even more camping books. I would rate this as one of the better books I have read about cooking in the woods. The instructions are easy to follow and the recipes are delicious. There are about 200 tasty recipes total, and he uses camp stoves, dutch ovens, reflector ovens, and the fire itself. The book has advice on pans and what to pack. He shows you how to cook the meals for big groups and small alike. And there are plenty of fun recipes for kids and scouts in here as well. He shows you how to cook in foil to cut down on dishes and pans, and other timesavers.

He also shows you differnet methods to build fires, and how to make a few home-made grills and stoves economically.
If you only buy one camp cook book, this would be a good choice.

If you buy this title buy the one with the 2nd edition marker on it, it is much improved. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It
I'm glad I checked this out at the library before buying, because it saved me ten bucks. The recipes are dated---most resort to using canned, processed and high sodium shelf foods as shortcuts. Out of the entire book, I only found three recipes I would try. The rest sounded not only unhealthy, but lousy-tasting!Ugh!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but relies too much on canned food
I got this at the library hoping to find some interesting recipes and tips that I could use while car camping, or while staying at a base camp with more amenities than you have while backpacking. While having some interesting recipes, this book was definitely into using canned/frozen and convenience foods.

Yes, I know you can pack a lot of stuff into an RV, but that doesn't mean you should. The biggest benefit is having the refrigerator to keep perishables such as fruits and vegetables in, and few recipes mentioned using fresh anything.Considering that you can even get lots of fruits and veggies pre-cut and bagged in most grocery stores/warehouse stores fairly inexpensively, this book reads as if it were written in the '50s or 60's with all the casserole add-a-can-of-cream-soup recipes.

Borrow from your library first before buying.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
I thought this book would provide more insight on kitchen appliances and ways to downsize but cook different meals. The recipes were awful in my opinion and I would not want to eat them even at home, much less on the open road. A few good hints but not at the price of buying the book brand new.

3-0 out of 5 stars Makes some assumptions on facilities
This cookbook had some limited use for me. It was a short introduction on tips for RV cooking. Overall some good general tips, but nothing that probably isn't in a good trade magazine. As an experienced camping and backpacking cook I was hoping for information on RV cooking now that I have a refrigerator. It does give some good recipes that utilize the better facilities of an RV. However about half the recipes assume you have an oven as well. My small Class B RV doesn't have an oven. Therefore, half the book is useless for me. Overall a slightly disappointing book that I wish I had looked over before purchasing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Trail Food
This is a GREAT book espically for those of us just starting out.The food ideas and drying properities are just the thing to cut weight.Highly recomnded.Trail Food: Drying and Cooking Food for Backpacking and Paddling

5-0 out of 5 stars The best, the healthiest.
I purchased this and lipsmackin backpackin at the same time and found this one to be the best. You can control the food you put in your body, you can use up garden extras, and the ideas for cross-use of items are excellent. Also small enough to pack along if you're not a lightweight hiker.I would highly recommend this as he's realistic about what you might want to purchase or not purchase to make the process easier - all budgets can afford his methods and he doesn't load you down with sodium. You can see my review of lipsmackin backpackin over there and find that sodium is a huge concern for me.It may not be a concern for you but even without that this book doesn't rely upon many store bought sauce packets or seasoning packets so you can choose what you like and enjoy your wilderness cooking that much more!

In other words, if you have a husband as I do with high blood pressure this book will give you options that others don't. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Trail Food
I enjoyed the author's personal antidotes and experiences on the trail. It made the recipes more relivant.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am really loving this book
I have no idea about camping, but my husband is trying to get me into it. My attitude has been open, but honestly I felt he would have a better time taking our cats on a trip through a drive-thru car wash than me camping.

I'm really trying to figure it all out, starting with 'whats the point?'. I visualized it at first as a trade-off; we (well, I) suffer in the woods for the sake of saving money on a hotel or being closer to what we traveled to see. Now, I still haven't gone camping yet as I am still putting the pieces together, but this book really did come across in a way that I can totally relate to.

Here is what I liked- the author flat out stating how at one time he really just endured the outdoors, much as I visualized myself doing should I give in and go camping with my husband. For me, I saw days of cold sandwiches, bitter black coffee, and M&Ms. How thrilling. The author admitted that before he really clued in to the importance and value of trail food, he would pine away for a nice, hot pizza. My thoughts exactly!

So, why suffer, when there is room service and take-out? And thats what this book is about: putting food right up there front and center as an essential part of the whole experience of camping.

Some of the reviews that I have read here state that the little short stories sprinkled throughout the book and at the beginning of the chapters has nothing to do with this book's intended topic: Trail Food. I don't feel that way, because I cannot for the life of me imagine enjoying the wilderness and feelings described those little stories while staring at a vertical rock wall I have to somehow navigate, or while under a tarp in a rainstorm in some anonymous part of the forest, miles from the nearest take-out.

But, with the right food?
A nice mocha? A hot pizza? Spiced eggs?
Suddenly that tarp is..kinda cool sounding..and that rain, well, even better :)

Thats what this book connects for me: that the overall experience of on the trail is highly correlated to the type, quality, and variety of food that you make available to yourself and others in your party.

I am starting to see from this book that camping in general is not something that has to be endured, if properly approached and executed. And that means giving food its rightful spot on your gear list: an alpha-item, not an afterthought.

Really, nobody here is more rank beginner noob than I am when it comes to things outdoors, but I will hazard a guess that one can have the most top-flight tents, sleeping bags, etc in the world and still have a miserable time on the trail, a time spent enduring.

This book has steered my thinking away from any such notion of enduring to one of enjoying, and with the simple recipes and some rather new things to me (like 'food dehydrators'), I can actually have some chance at making that happen.

Yes, at my tent, lean-to, tarp, or whatever..its going to be pizza time! :)

2-0 out of 5 stars Newer/better trail food books out there
I am in charge of packing the food for my sister and I each Spring and Fall for ten days in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. I started drying our own food after the first trip (up to 15 now).

I bought this book because I like Alan S. Kesselhelm as a writer. While Kesselhelm has in-depth wilderness experience, I fear I was spoiled by owning Teresa Marrone's "The Back-Country Kitchen" first. Good basics, of course, but my fav parts were the illustrations by Marypat Zitzer and the short introductory essays about life in the wilderness. ... Read more

Excerpt: In mathematics and science, dimensional analysis is a tool to understand the properties of physical quantities independent of the units used to measure them. Every physical quantity is some combination of mass, length, time, electric charge, and temperature, (denoted M, L, T, Q, and , respectively). For example, speed, which may be measured in meters per second (m/s), miles per hour (mi/h), or some other units, has dimension expressed as L/T or alternatively LT . Dimensional analysis is routinely used to check the plausibility of derived equations and computations. It is also used to form reasonable hypotheses about complex physical situations that can be tested by experiment or by more developed theories of the phenomena, and to categorize types of physical quantities and units based on their relations to or dependence on other units, or their "dimensions", or their lack thereof. The basic principle of dimensional analysis was known to Isaac Newton (1686) who referred to it as the "Great Principle of Similitude". Important contributions were made by the 19th century French mathematician Joseph Fourier, based on the idea that the physical laws like should be independent of the units employed to measure the physical variables. This led to the conclusion that meaningful laws must be homogeneous equations in their various units of measurement, a result which was eventually formalized in the Buckingham theorem. This theorem describes how every physically meaningful equation involving n variables can be equivalently rewritten as an equation of dimensionless parameters, where m is the number of fundamental...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8267 ... Product Description
This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for camping and outdoor stamped and spun aluminum cooking equipment across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across over 900 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for camping and outdoor stamped and spun aluminum cooking equipment. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Product Description
This study covers the latent demand outlook for camping and outdoor stamped and spun aluminum cooking equipment across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for camping and outdoor stamped and spun aluminum cooking equipment. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. ... Read more

Product Description
This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for camping and outdoor stamped and spun aluminum cooking equipment across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as "regions"). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of "economic population", as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this "economic" definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city's marketing and distribution value vis-a-vis others. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
