Product Description
Spanning over two centuries of constitutional developments in the United States and Canada, this comprehensive collection of essays brings together the provocative writings of prominent political scientists and jurists from both countries on the historical origins, ideology, function and political determinants of the two working constitutional systems. The book's lively and clear analysis summarises the intricate details of constitutional politics in a way that will help readers to face up to the historical choices that now confront us. Policies that have dominated public debate in recent years are examined under four broad headings: federalism, church-state relations, the politics of rights and the role of judges in formulating public policy. Addressed both to students of law, history and political science and to all who are concerned about their constitutional future, these essays examine issues that have led to profound changes in the lives of ordinary citizens in both countries. ... Product Description
Without pressure from a small but influential group of London financiers, Confederation would not have occurred in 1867, if at all. These financiers supported the unification of the British North American colonies because they believed it would rescue their under-performing investments and keep British North America within the British Empire. Andrew Smith discusses the role of British investors in Canadian Confederation, covering the period from the construction of the Grand Trunk Railroad in the 1850s to Canada's purchase of Rupert's Land in 1869-70.He describes how some investors lobbied the British government for the policies that made Confederation possible, working closely with the Fathers of Confederation, many of whom were participants in the same trans-Atlantic crony-capitalist system. British factory owners with classical liberal beliefs, however, disliked Confederation because they believed it would delay the political independence of the North American colonies, something they saw as beneficial."British Businessmen and Canadian Confederation" reminds Canadians that most contemporaries of Confederation saw it as a way to preserve the colonists' bonds with Britain rather than to expand their political autonomy. It should interest a wide audience - from students of Canadian political history to historians interested in Victorian globalization. ... Read more

Product Description

Since the Colombo Plan in the early 1950s, food aid has been an important and highly visible component of the Canadian development assistance program.Until the early 1970s, however, the Canadian food aid program was little more than a loosely connected collection of disparate programs designed to meet a host of sometimes conflicting objectives. In the wake of the world food crisis of 1972-75, a growing number of groups began to question the developmental effectiveness of food aid.In response, the Canadian government undertook an extensive review and assessment of its food aid program, which resulted in a series of new policy initiatives designed to change both the substance of food aid programs and the manner in which they were administered. These changes marked a watershed in the history of the Canadian food aid program, setting out the fundamental policy themes that have been consolidated and refined in the 1980s and early 1990s.Mark Charlton examines the evolution of the Canadian food aid program during this critical period of policy reform.Focusing on the rationale of the food aid program, the nature of the planning and programming process, the selection of delivery channels, the make-up of the food aid commodity basket, and the nature of donor-recipient relations, Charlton provides useful insights into the overall objectives and priorities of Canadian foreign policy in the developing world. He also reveals the impact of domestic economic interests, Canadian political culture, bureaucratic politics, and the global food aid regime on the evolution of Canadian aid policies.

Product Description
Constitutionalist Ted McWhinney draws on his extensive experience in the workings of our federal system to discuss the need for modernization and updating to meet the radically new demands of the plural, multicultural Canada of the twenty-first century. His thinking has the advantage of his personal exchanges with prime ministers from the time of John Diefenbaker, as well as his recent direct participation in governmental decision-making in Ottawa during two elected terms as Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary to several ministries. Proposals for reform are canvassed frankly. More importantly, practical ways out of our present constitutional straight-jacket--the result of the failure of the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords--are put forward for debate. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars McWhinney's Memoirs
I was thoroughly disappointed with this book.Rather than discuss politics and the constitution 1993-2002, the author chose to share with his readersa glimpse into his life as an MP. The strategies he employed, the goals he achieved and the role he played in the decision making process. If you are expecting a discussion about politics and the constitution, you've come across the wrong book. Much of the text is written in first person, and very little addresses 'the need for modernization and updatng to meet the radically new demands of the plural multicultural Canada'. If the photos in the book are any indication of the balance of the text, consider this - of the 23 photos inlcuded, McWhinney appears in 22, Chretien appears in 3. ... Read more

Product Description
"Lesbian and gay rights are human rights!" Is this just a political slogan to be chanted outside legislatures, or are there legal arguments to support the claim that the right to be free from sexual orientation discrimination is a human right? In particular, can national constitutions or international human rights treaties be interpreted as prohibiting discrimination against gays, lesbians, and bisexuals? Robert Wintemute attempts to answer these questions by examining three of the most commonly used arguments in favor of such an interpretation: sexual orientation is an "immutable status", sexual orientation is a "fundamental choice" (or part of "privacy"), and sexual orientation discrimination is sex discrimination. To assess their merits, he looks at the relative success and failure in cases argued under three of the world's most influential human rights instruments: the United States Constitution, the European Convention on Human Rights, and theCanadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He also considers the potential impact of the United Nations Human Rights Committee's recent interpretation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in Toonen v. Australia. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sexual Orientation and Human Rights
This book is great. It provides a comparative analysis of ways in which the European Convention on Human Rights, the Canadian Charter of Rightsand the US Bill of Rights protect (or fail to protect) lesbian and gayrights. It is comprehensive in its approach - the only criticism beingthat it is now out of date. This is a prblem particularly for the sectionsof Europe and Canada, as a great deal of improvement in legal protection oflesbians and gay men has occurred in those jurisdictions. But despitethis, it is still a very useful book for understanding the development ofrights protections in these three jurisdictions.Suitable primarily forlawyers, law students and political scientists - not really for the layreader. ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Since Canadian Confederation in 1867, there have been several proposals for new Canadian provinces and territories. The Constitution of Canada requires an amendment for the creation of a new province but the creation of a new territory requires only an act of Parliament; therefore, it is easier to create a territory than a province.Canada's four original provinces in 1867 were Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, with their shape and size varying over time. Since then, the following provinces and territories have joined Canada: When Canada was formed in 1867 its provinces were a relatively narrow strip in the southeast, with vast territories in the interior. It grew by adding British Columbia in 1871, P.E.I. in 1873, the British Arctic Islands in 1880, and Newfoundland in 1949; meanwhile, its provinces grew both in size and number at the expense of its territories. Provinces of Canada Manitoba was created as a province in 1870 in an area that had been planned to be part of the Northwest Territories. ... Read more
